Cheney in Manhattan: 'A giant conspiracy' on Iran

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0509/Cheney_in_Manhattan_A_giant_conspiracy_on_Iran.html

Former Vice President Dick Cheney swung quietly through New York City Tuesday night to watch his daughter, Elizabeth, a former State Department official, argue the conservative side in a debate over American policy toward Iran, and to express his own skepticism of President Obama's promised negotiations.

"We fail to recognize the fact that we're alone out there in terms of trying to achieve the objective of forcing the Iranians to give up their nuclear weapons," Cheney said at a dinner following the Intelligence Squared debate, in which Elizabeth Cheney and former Coalition Provisional Authority spokesman Dan Senor debated former diplomat Nicholas Burns and Mideast scholar Ken Pollack on the topic of negotiations with Iran.

The former Vice President characterized the Iranian goal in negotiations on ending that country's nuclear program as mere stalling for time, and the Europeans as trying to "restrain the U.S." from military action.

"Everybody's in a giant conspiracy to achieve a different objective than the one we want to achieve," Cheney said.

The negotiations are "bound to fail unless we are perceived as very credible" in threatening military action against Iran, he said.

"Most of the other nations out there are willing to live with a nuclear-armed Iran" he said, citing France, Germany and the United Kingdom in particular.

Cheney was echoing his daughter's comments during the formal debate at Rockefeller University on Manhattan's East Side.

"If they believe the threat of military force is on the table thats frankly the only thing Ive seen that convinces them theyd better get serious about sanctions," Elizabeth Cheney, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, said of U.S. allies at the formal, Oxford-style debate, sponsored by the Rosenkranz Foundation.

"You negotiated for weak sanctions," she told Burns.

"No I didnt," he replied, at one point noting that it seemed as if he and Ms. Cheney "live in alternate universes."

"We ought to have the courage to see it and the courage to admit it," Burns said, "What President Obama is trying to do is to create a new type of diplomacy," which he described as "tough-minded."

Cheney and Senor, he said, are "leaving [Obama] with one option -- and that is war."

Liz Cheney noted that she was "somewhere to the right of many people in the audience tonight, with one or two notable exceptions," indicating her father, but the former Vice President was in fact quite well-received on the hostile Manhattan terrain: He received a round of applause, and a lone hiss, when introduced, and he signed autographs after the event.

DE BORCHGRAVE: Jordan 's king warns of war
Conflict seen in 2010 if Palestinian state isn't created this year

By Arnaud de Borchgrave | Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Jordan 's King Abdullah II, in his 10th year on the Hashemite throne, warns that either a Palestinian state is created this year - or there will be another war in the Middle East in 2010.
If the king's either/or prognostication proves accurate, war will come again next year. There isn't a snowball's chance in the Negev Desert of a Palestinian state in the West Bank in 2009 - or 2010.
Creation of such an entity would cost tens of billions of dollars that the United States would be expected to pay. The repatriation of about 300,000 Jewish settlers, now in 160 settlements, would entail billions more. And after what happened in 2005 in Gaza, where about 8,000 settlers who had occupied 40 percent of the 130-mile strip for 38 years were forcibly evicted by about 50,000 Israel Defense Force troops and Israeli police, few, if any, are willing to be uprooted again.
The Arab peace plan - pre-1967 war frontiers in exchange for normal diplomatic and economic relations between Israel and 21 Arab nations - also would have the endorsement of the world's 57 Muslim nations, according to the Jordanian monarch. Seldom prone to hyperbole, the Western-trained Abdullah said Israel is being offered "one-third of the world waiting to meet Israelis with open arms. ... The future is not the Jordan River or the Golan Heights or the Sinai, the future is Morocco in the Atlantic and Indonesia in the Pacific. That is the prize [for Israel ]."
For Israel , a Palestinian state would bring Ben Gurion International Airport within Palestinian rocket range. Such a state also would have to be governed by a coalition team that would include Hamas, seen by Israel as a revanchist organization whose objective is a Palestinian state with the Mediterranean Sea as its Western frontier - sans Israel . And Hamas' loyalties are to Iran 's Revolutionary Guards. Their common objective is Israel 's destruction.
Even with territorial adjustments to the 1967 border in Israel's favor, which the Arab peace plan allows, Israelis would begin to feel that the concept of a purely Jewish state is condemned by history to a short shelf life.
Underlying the current geopolitical equation is the growing belief among Palestinian intellectuals that a one-state solution is preferable to two states. This school argues it would be wiser in the long run to become an underprivileged, downtrodden minority within the state of Israel and the occupied territories, whence the Palestinians could campaign with Israel 's 1.2 million-strong Arab minority for equal rights. The overwhelming majority of these Israeli Arabs say they want to remain part of Israel . Demography, many believe, will eventually deliver a Lebanon-style hybrid state.
While running for the presidency, Mr. Obama argued it was unrealistic for a U.S. president to "suddenly snap his fingers and bring about peace in the region." That was - and still is - a correct assessment. Nevertheless, National Security Adviser James L. Jones, heartened by his own achievement last year when he got Israeli and Jordan-trained Palestinian security personnel to work together in the West Bank city of Jenin , is convinced his boss can still make things happen in the Middle East .
Gen. Jones, a four-star former Marine commandant and NATO supreme commander, senses "an expectation around the world that we are in a moment when we can make progress" in the Middle East, provided America offers "leadership," he told ABC.
Next week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will have Mr. Obama's ear, followed by Egypt 's Hosni Mubarak and Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas before the president heads to Egypt on June 4 to address the Muslim world and its 1.4 billion people.
There is little doubt Mr. Obama will be tougher on Israel than his predecessors. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. told the annual convention of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee what it didn't like hearing - don't build more settlements, dismantle "existing outposts" and let the Palestinians move freely. The "outposts" referred only to recent clandestine expansion, not to the 160 Jewish enclaves in the West Bank .
Words alone will not change Israeli policy. Mr. Netanyahu has stated flatly that Israel is not bound by any previous commitment to a two-state solution for the Palestinians. For the Palestinians, the capital of a sovereign state has to be Arab East Jerusalem, where the Israelis already have settled 200,000 Jews.
Making aid to Israel conditional on the creation of a Palestinian state in 2009 would be a thunderclap heard around the world - but a sense-of-Congress resolution would quickly drain such a warning of substance.
Israel 's main concern at this geopolitical crossroads is Iran 's nuclear ambitions and the existential threat those ambitions pose to the Jewish body politic. Diplomatic scuttlebutt had White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel dropping hints to major donors behind AIPAC's closed doors last week that "thwarting Iran 's nuclear program is conditional on progress in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians."
As part of a humongous peace plan that would cover all Middle Eastern bases, the Obama foreign policy team also has been trying to detach Syria from its principal benefactor, Iran . Syria 's government dailies riposted with targeted anti-Semitic articles. Columnist Jallal Kheir Bek said the Jews sucked the blood from Jesus' wounds during His crucifixion and called for the Arabs, Muslims and Christians to unite to defeat them. Hard to break bad habits in the Middle East.

Newsweek's Jon Meacham was on the PBS Charlie Rose program tonight and conveyed that Obama has basically given Netanyahu the go ahead to attack Iran as Meachem also conveyed that Obama mentioned that he would not rule out anything with regard to using military force against Iran for the security of America (for the security of Israel rather being the AIPAC toady that Obama is!):

Netanyahu Also Hyped the Iraqi "Nuclear Threat

"Tuesday, May 19, 2009 6:09 PM
From: "Stephen Sniegoski"

Friends,

Netanyahu Also Hyped the Iraqi “Nuclear Threat”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently in Washington hyping the alleged Iranian nuclear threat. It should be recalled that he was hyping the danger of Saddam’s alleged nuclear threat during the build-up for the United States attack on Iraq. Is there any reason to think that the Iranian nuclear threat is any more real than the fictitious Iraqi one?

The following is an excerpt from my book—“The Transparent Cabal: The Neoconservative Agenda, War in the Middle East, and the National Interest of Israel”

http://www.amazon.com/Transparent-Cabal-Neoconservative-National-Interest/dp/1932528172

http://home.comcast.net/~transparentcabal/

Excerpt from Stephen J. Sniegoski, “The Transparent Cabal,” p. 171.

Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also trumpeting the

necessity of war. In September, 2002, the Wall Street Journal published a

piece by Netanyahu entitled “The Case for Toppling Saddam,” in which

he held that “This is a dictator who is rapidly expanding his arsenal of

biological and chemical weapons, who has used these weapons of mass

destruction against his subjects and his neighbors, and who is feverishly

trying to acquire nuclear weapons.” Netanyahu waved the red flag of Saddam’s

purported nuclear threat. “Two decades ago it was possible to thwart

Saddam’s nuclear ambitions by bombing a single installation,” Netanyahu

exclaimed.

“Today nothing less than dismantling his regime will do. For Saddam’s nuclear

program has changed. He no longer needs one large reactor to produce the

deadly material necessary for atomic bombs. He can produce it in centrifuges

the size of washing machines that can be hidden throughout the country – and

Iraq is a very big country. Even free and unfettered inspections will not uncover

these portable manufacturing sites of mass death.”98

Netanyahu’s focus was Iraq’s alleged nuclear threat. “[T]he imperative is

to defang the Iraqi regime by preventing its acquisition of atomic weapons,”

Netanyahu solemnly declared in October 2002. “No inspectors will be able

to do that job.”99 In fact, as early as April 2002, Netanyahu was briefing U.S.

senators as to the nuclear danger of Saddam Hussein. According to columnist

Robert Novak, Netanyahu warned that Saddam “not only is acquiring

nuclear weapons but may have the means of delivering them against the

United States” via “satchels carried by terrorists.”100

As Barton Gellman describes in his book, “Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency,” Dick Cheney used the mini-nuke claim to persuade war-skeptic Dick Armey of the need for an attack on Iraq. As the influential House Majority Leader, Armey’s support was crucial for getting Congressional support for the war. Armey’s opposition would have provided cover for many less-than-courageous Democrats and Republicans to oppose the de-facto war measure.

Obama Steers Toward Endless War With Islam

Posted By Michael Scheuer On May 19, 2009

http://original.antiwar.com/scheuer/2009/05/19/obama-steers-toward-endless-war-with-islam/

In just over 100 days, President Obama is on the verge of ensuring that militant Islam’s war on America will be waged for decades to come and its forces will never suffer manpower or money shortages. How did he accomplish so much in some little time? He simply behaved as all U.S. political leaders behave; that is, as an ignorant and arrogant interventionist.

Let us take the ignorant part first. Since Jan. 20, Obama and his band of Israel-Firsters have shown the Muslim world – moderate, conservative, radical, and fanatic – that George W. Bush was no one-off fluke, that Democrats intend to wage war on Islam just like the Republicans. How so? Well, look at Obama’s decisions and actions. They can only be explained by accepting that the new president is ignorant of our Islamist foes, either by choice or because the ability to read is not required to graduate at Harvard.

For 13 years, Osama bin Laden, his lieutenants, their allies, and numerous anti-Islamist commentators across the Middle East have patiently, repeatedly, and explicitly explained to the bipartisan U.S. governing elite and its media and academic acolytes that the Islamists attacking America do not give a tinker’s damn about its lifestyle, liberties, freedoms, or elections. Orally and in print, U.S. leaders have been told what motivates the Islamists’ war on America is the U.S. government’s foreign policies in the Muslim world. Foremost among these are U.S. support for Muslim tyrannies, the U.S. military’s presence in Muslim lands, and unqualified U.S. support for Israel.

And what have Obama and his advisers done with this excellent intelligence about enemy motivation, which, by the way, comes straight from the horse’s mouth? Well, they clearly ignored it, and by deciding to operate in an intelligence-free environment Obama has acted in a way that will intensify and prolong the Islamists’ war against the United States. How so?

On the tyranny front, Obama chose to go to Turkey for his first visit to the Muslim world. That country is formally governed by an Islamic party, but it is actually ruled by a thoroughly Westernized general staff ready to pounce on and dismantle the Islamic regime if its gets too religiously ambitious. Needless to say, Turkey is regarded by many Muslims as having long ago sold its Islamic soul by joining the "Christian" NATO alliance.
Obama then proceeded to acknowledge America’s oil vassalage to Saudi Arabia when, on being introduced, he bowed to Saudi King Abdullah, the master of the Saudi police state. The president also chose to speak his first televised words to Muslims in an interview on al-Arabiya television, the mouthpiece of the Saudi tyranny.
Obama next said that he will go to Egypt to address Muslims in a speech he promised during the presidential campaign. This visit will show Obama prating about the glories of secular democracy and the peacefulness of Islam while standing cheek-by-jowl with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, chief warden of the Muslim world’s premier police state.
On the military side, Obama has announced plans to send 21,000 more U.S. troops to what Muslims call "the defiant land of jihad, Afghanistan." The arrival of those troops – too few to win but enough to slow our defeat – will be portrayed by al-Jazeera, the BBC, and especially the Saudis’ anti-American shills at al-Arabiya as a brutal re-invasion of Afghanistan.
Obama was silent while Israel invaded and wrecked Gaza last winter; has appointed an IDF veteran as his chief of staff – think of the espionage potential in that move; has watched the proliferation of Israeli settlements; and has re-imposed sanctions on Syria and kept war with Iran on the front burner. His Justice Department has also exempted from prosecution Israel-First Americans and their agents in the Congress.
Like former president Bush, then, Obama has kept himself ignorant of the Islamists’ motivation and is playing directly into their hands; indeed, bin Laden, with all his road-building skills, could not pave a smoother path to hell for America. In taking this tack, Obama also displays the abiding arrogance that permeates our governing elite, an attitude that causes them to believe that both Muslims and Americans are stupid. If you doubt this, listen to the sophomoric words of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs as he tries to make sure that no one looks behind the curtain of Mubarak’s tyranny when Obama speaks in Egypt:

"[T]his isn’t a speech to leaders. This is a speech to many, many people and a continuing effort by this president and this White House to demonstrate how we can work together to ensure the safety and security and the future well-being through hope and opportunity of the children of this country and of the Muslim world."

Well, Mr. Gibbs, as one of Obama’s predecessors once said, you can’t fool all of the people all of the time. Elected on a pledge to end Bush’s wars, Obama has instead ensured their extension by actions sure to further inflame Islamists and, indeed, most Muslims governed by royal, military, or elected-for-life tyrants. As it becomes clear that Obama’s administration is miring America deeper in a war with Islam that benefits only Israel, he and his advisers will repeat the mantra long intoned by Israeli politicians: "We tried our best to better relations with Islam, but we were rebuffed and so now Americans must soldier on in endless wars." This will be a lie. Obama may use softer rhetoric, but he is loyal to the status quo interventionism Washington practices no matter which party holds power.

The only redeeming aspect of Obama’s 100-plus-day foreign-policy debacle is that his deceit is about played out. He will fool no Muslims. His courting of Westernized Turkish generals, bowing to King Abdullah, and joining Mubarak in a cheer for freedom will tell Muslims all they need to know about U.S. intentions in their region. Likewise, Obama’s expanding war in Afghanistan and his kowtowing to Israel and American Israel-Firsters will give the lie to his claim that Washington is now an honest broker in the Middle East.

Americans will be slower off the mark than Muslims, but they will soon see that Democrats share the Republicans’ eagerness to wage unnecessary wars at the cost of their children and taxes. The inevitable need for more troops and money to stave off U.S. defeat in Afghanistan, the increased Islamist attacks on U.S. interests at home and abroad, and – most of all – the unraveling of "success" in Iraq (which, in turn, will prevent a U.S. withdrawal that would be lethal to Israel) will be seen by Americans for what they are: the price of an ignorant, arrogant interventionism that is ruining not only America’s economy and domestic cohesion, but their kids’ future prosperity and security. At this point, a long overdue foreign-policy debate can begin. It will give Americans a last chance to realign the republic’s foreign policy with the tenets of Washington’s Farewell Address and, in so doing, forever break the corrupting power of the Israel-Firsters, individuals who Washington uncannily described in 1796 as "ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens … [who] betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country."

Pray to God this occurs before a cynical, racist Benjamin Netanyahu presents Obama with a fait accompli that drags 300 million Americans into Israel’s war against Iran.
