The Jewish Inst. for National Security Affairs (JINSA) is the lobbying arm of the Zionist movement within the US military-industrial complex and has made major strides in integrating the Israeli arms industry into that of the US. As JINSA was among those pushing the Bush administration into going to war on Iraq, so it is among those leading the charge (from far behind the lines, of course) into Iran. http://www.jinsa.org/articles/print.html/documentid/2900 JINSA Online, April 06, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 6, 2005 JINSA Report #481 ?Creating a Post-Saddam Iraq? In a monograph of that title, published by JINSA in 1997, Dr. Ahmed Chalabi offered the JINSA Board of Directors a cogent description of the difficulties besetting Iraq and a prescient prescription for deliverance from Saddam. It wasn?t right in all the particulars, notably the one about using indigenous forces to overthrow the regime, but it was right in the broad strokes of policy and the need to take affirmative action to rescue Iraq from Saddam. ?Iraq is blessed with a talented and industrious population... (it) may fairly be described as the western world?s gateway to the non-Arab Muslim East. More importantly, Iraq is the only Middle Eastern country with both water and oil.? He said the Ba?ath Party had ?systematically destroyed Iraqi society; eliminating or suborning all independent social structures, everything which offered an independent outlet for Iraqi civil society.? His called on the U.S.: ?To consider the realities of Saddam?s dictatorship.? ?To note the physical weakness of the regime.? To offer ?an open U.S. commitment to Saddam?s overthrow and its practical _expression in serious support of the democratic opposition.? He added: ?What we don?t need are U.S. troops or high technology weapons.? And for the future ... ?General amnesty to all but the most culpable... a governing transitional council of all religious, political and ethnic leadership and an explicit commitment to Iraq?s unity and territorial integrity.? Four out of five isn?t bad. The U.S., not the Iraq National Congress (INC) provided the military power, but despite the fact that what we did looked like what he said, Dr. Chalabi has ceaselessly been vilified and victimized by the American intelligence community and by the State Department under Secretary Powell. He was accused of using an agent codenamed ?Curveball? to pass bad intelligence to the CIA, and accused of manipulating the Administration to get us to invade his country for him. He was hounded upon his return to Iraq - NOT by former Ba?athists, but by the CIA! It is important then to note that The Wall Street Journal cites the new Robb-Silberman Report on pre-war intelligence, saying, ?Post-war investigations concluded that Curveball?s reporting was not influenced by, controlled by, or connected to, the INC... Over all, CIA?s post-war investigations revealed that INC-related sources had a minimal impact on pre-war assessments.? So, nine weeks after the Iraqi people defied the odds and chose a government, and today as the new government has chosen a president, we are pleased to remind our readers that in 1997 Dr. Chalabi came to JINSA and called for a ?broad-based popular movement committed to representative government and to the protection of the human rights of all Iraqis (as offering) moral and practical power,? adding, ?despite the ethnic and religious complexity of Iraqi society, parties representing all facets are united in this democratic goal.? We hoped so at and wrote the time, ?It is in America?s best interest to support indigenous opposition movements and their... supporters seeking changes in the governing regimes in Baghdad and Tehran.? Iraq down; Iran left to go. A strong state with a powerful executive which did not require democratic consultation before acting, combined with a hatred of bourgeois democracy. Hatred of Communism and Socialism as political movements based on the idea of class differences and class antagonisms. Against this idea, Fascism aimed to substitute a corporative state that denied a divergence of class interests between capital and labour. The formation of a mass party on paramilitary lines which drew its recruits in part from the discontented and disenfranchised working class. Admiration of power and the deed which found expression in the cult of violence. Training for war and violence gave free rein to sadistic and pathological characteristics. Authoritarian programmes which emphasized conformity, discipline and submission. Society was militarized and directed by a messianic leader. The cultivation of irrationality - the impulse was more important than logical thought. Irrationality led to a cult of death - witness the Spanish Fascist slogan: Arriba la Muerte! - Long live Death! Nostalgia for the legendary past. For instance, in Italy?s case, the Roman Empire. In Germany, an appeal to primitive myths of Nibelungen. The initials SS were written in Runic letters from Viking times. Japan resurrected the medieval code of the samurai. Aversion to intellectuals whom Fascism accused of undermining the old certainties and traditional values. Fascism claimed to honour the dignity of labour and the role of the peasantry as providers of the staples of life. With this went an idealized picture of rural life - the healthy countryside versus the decadent city. Machismo. Women were relegated to traditional female roles as housewives, servants, nurses, and as breeders of ?racially pure? warriors for the state war machine. Fascism was frequently subsidized by big industrialists and landowners. Fascism?s electoral support came overwhelmingly from the middle-class - in particular the lower middle-class affected by economic crisis. Fascism needed scapegoat enemies - ?the Other? on whom to focus society?s agressions and hate.

| Subject: Fw: Sharon Tries to Pawn Off Fake Photos of Iran's "Nuclear Installations" http://www.counterpunch.org/nimmo04132005.html Israeli Blackjack with Iran Sharon Tries to Pawn Off Fake Photos of Iran's "Nuclear Installations" By KURT NIMMO Las Cruces, New Mexico It's really sad when you have to read newspapers and web sites in the Middle East to find out what is happening in the United States. For instance, al-Jazeera was about the only site outside of Israel to report that General Yoav Gallan, war criminal Ariel Sharon's "military advisor" (that is, he tells Arik the Butcher the best way to kill Palestinians and other Arabs), "has reportedly handed Bush documents and aerial photos of Iranian nuclear installations during the Israeli prime minister's Monday meeting with the U.S. President George W. Bush, Israeli public radio reported on Tuesday." In short, the Israelis have devised a few fake photos to lay on Bush since Iran does not actually have "nuclear installations," as the International Atomic Energy Agency reported late last year. Israel wants the United States to bomb the daylights out of Iran, a possibility that will grow more and more remote as time passes, a fact that really freaks out Sharon and his Jabotinskyite partners in international crime who want every Arab or Muslim nation in the Middle East bombed or at least cowed by the same sort of shock and awe Bush used against Iraq. Gallan, who accompanied Sharon in his summit with Bush at his Texas ranch, presented the photos together with information the Israeli intelligence services gathered on the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme, the Israeli radio added, without mentioning how the photos were taken. It just said that the images showed that the Iranian nuclear programme was at a "very advanced" stage. It is amazing what you can do with computers these days -- entire alternate universes can be ray traced into existence. No doubt Iranian nuclear programs can be likewise devised with a relatively inexpensive computer and a little bit of software. Scott McClellan, who usually does Bush's talking for him, more or less admitted the above, although he did not give any details and the slavish corporate media did not ask for any. Israeli defense officials asked Sharon to raise the option of military attack against Iran's nuclear facilities during talks with President Bush. On the other hand, U.S. defense officials had so far refused Israeli entreaties to discuss the military option against Iran as a last resort if diplomatic pressure fail. Here's a novel idea... if the flipping Israelis are so hot to invade (or at minimum bomb) Iran, let them do it themselves. Of course they will not do this since there are around 66 million Iranians and about 6 million Israelis, including a couple hundred thousand rabid settlers in the West Bank, Gaza, and the land Israel filched from Syria. Better to get the stupid Americans to do it, although it appears the Pentagon is not exactly chomping at the bit to invade Iran considering the mess in Iraq. So here we have Sharon and his mass murder advisor presenting Bush the Dumber with photos, obviously contrived since nobody can find nukes in Iran except the Israelis and their Neocon buddies, who are, just like the Likudites, demonstrated and practiced liars and deceivers, well tutored in making up fake "intelligence," as the Neocon lie factory, the Office of Special Plans, did in the lead up to mass murdering around 100,000 innocent Iraqis. Israel has previously made clear it considers all options legitimate for preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear bomb. Analysts say that the Jewish state wouldn't resort to force unless being supported by its chief ally the United States. Of course not -- the Iranians would wipe them off the map. "We are not managing to get the Americans to talk about what will happen if the diplomatic efforts fail and Iran resumes enriching uranium, putting it on track to an atomic bomb." Seriously, this is a no-brainer -- stop messing around with folks and maybe they will live and let live. Of course, Israel and the United States are unable to stop messing around with people, and such behavior is apparently pathologically ingrained -- Iran remembers well the CIA overthrowing its democratically elected government and installing a brutal shah and his personal Gestapo, Savak -- and this sort of nasty behavior is more than often not the reason small countries in the third world have a hankering to go nuclear, to ward off the neocon and neolib wolves, as the example of North Korea illustrates (notice how Bush and the Neocons are not saber-rattling much in North Korea's general direction as of late). Naturally, according to the Likudites and their Neocon buddies, Muslims and Arabs have a genetic predisposition to kill Jews and if they are allowed to have even one measly Hiroshima-grade atom bomb they will immediately nuke Tel Aviv. It is a bullshit story, entirely racist and irrational, the sort of nonsense the Zionists have pedaled for decades in an effort to get their way, that is to say de-Palestinianize Palestine and demonstrate their mercilessness to the Arabs and Iranians. Moreover, when history is examined, the indisputable fact emerges that it is Israel, under the leadership of a number of rabid Zionist serial offenders such as Sharon and Begin, that is responsible for much of the trouble in the region, from starting a couple major wars to killing scads of otherwise peace-loving people and blaming it on the Arabs (viz., the Lavon affair and Mossad's planting of a radio device in Libya, resulting in the U.S. bombing Libya, to name but two of a number of murderously deceptive events engineered by rabid and remarkably sociopathic Zionists). Hell, if I was Iranian with a neighbor like Israel I'd want a couple nukes of my own too, especially considering the Israelis have about 200 of them. Although Israel has never publicly acknowledged that it maintains a nuclear arsenal, foreign experts assert it has between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads. Big time double standards -- but then most Israelis are white people and white people wouldn't think about nuking other people... that is unless they are non-white, for instance, Japanese civilians. Obviously, Sharon visited Bush at his fake cowboy ranch in Texas for one reason and one reason only -- to convince him to bomb the heck out of Iran, something Bush now seems reluctant to do considering the intractable situation in Iraq. Sharon is likely to have a tizzy and no doubt his options are slim to none in regard to Iran, a nation admittedly run by a clique of medieval mullahs not particularly liked by most Iranians. Of course, the average Iranian distrusts Israel and the United States even more and will support the mullahs if push comes to shove and the United States invades or does a number on their country with cruise missiles and other mass murder hardware, about the only industrial product America still manufactures. Is it possible somebody, somewhere, possibly a bit saner and not connected at the hip to the Neocons and their Israeli taskmasters, is whispering in Bush's ear? If sanity -- or a modicum of sanity -- is to rule, we will find out by June, supposedly when the Iranian window closes, according to the Israelis. If Bush does not attack Iran by June, the odds the U.S. will attack at all will probably end up about as promising as a Saturday night spent at a blackjack table in Las Vegas. | Forwarded: Just saw this in a November 2004 BBC story, but don't recall seeing these comments in the US media. Scheuer, himself, is quite likely a Jew. "Bin Laden is attacking us because a specific set of US policies that have been in gear for 30 years and haven't been reviewed, haven't been debated, haven't been questioned," says Mr Scheuer, (a former head of the CIA's Bin Laden unit) who has written two books anonymously criticising government policies. 'Lack of discussion' But Mike Scheuer, a former head of the CIA's Bin Laden unit who resigned from the agency this month, says there is a dangerous lack of understanding in the United States about what motivates Bin Laden and those who support him. After the debate, the American people would be going into the future knowing they were faced with an extraordinarily long and bloody war Mike Scheuer, former CIA operative This has led some wrongly to perceive the US as fighting a single organisation when in fact it faces a global, radical Islamic insurgency. "Bin Laden is attacking us because a specific set of US policies that have been in gear for 30 years and haven't been reviewed, haven't been debated, haven't been questioned," says Mr Scheuer, who has written two books anonymously criticising government policies. He cited the apparently unquestioning US support for Israel; America's presence on the Arabian peninsula; and support for regimes perceived as oppressing Muslims and for Muslim "tyrannies". Mr Scheuer doesn't necessarily argue for a change in policy but says there needs to be a greater awareness of the roots of the problem in order to appreciate the potential longevity of the threat. "At the end of the day it may be decided by the democratic process that these policies are good for us and should remain unchanged... but the big difference would be that after the debate, the American people would be going into the future knowing they were faced with an extraordinarily long and bloody war to be fought because of those policies." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LA Times: U.S. policy on Israel key motive for 911 Attack http://www.warwithoutend.co.uk/wake-up-america-your-government-is-hijacked-by-zionism/2005/02/19/la-times-u-s-policy-on-israel-key-motive-for-911-attack.php | | | | Alpha | | Posted: Sun Apr 10, 2005 1:09 pm Post subject: Check out The Gorilla in the Room |

You can tell Rep. Jones has read up on this, and is aware of a lot of the material I've mentioned on this blog. (Didn't he get the memo that AIPAC doesn't allow you to talk about that?) Anyway, I'm going to take off my Democratic partisan hat for a moment and give kudos to Rep. Jones -- he linked it all together, and you can hear the emotion in his voice as he goes after Perle. He mentions that he's been to four funerals for Marines from bases in North Carolina recently, and you can tell that the fact that he understands that they died in a war sold under false pretenses offends him greatly. | Date: Mon, 11 Apr 2005 18:56:31 -0700 From: "Jeff Blankfort" <jblankfort@earthlink.net> Subject: AJC Mideast Briefing: the Crawford Summit and More This briefing from Israel by the American Jewish Committee's Eran Lerman, formerly a member of Israeli intelligence is well worth reading, particularly the analysis he offers at the end of the article. And, of course, there is the question of Iran. Jeff The Crawford Summit and The Question of Construction in the E-1 Zone: A New Round in the Battle of Jerusalem? A Weekly Briefing on Israeli and Middle Eastern Affairs April 11, 2005 Dr. Eran Lerman Director Israel/Middle East Office There was a dramatic tone to some of the media reports this week, on the eve of the "Crawford Summit," about the question of settlement expansion; a conflict was brewing, it was argued, over the Bush administration's displeasure with Israeli plans to build 3,500 housing units in an area known as E-1. This would constitute an extension westward of the town of Ma'aleh Adumim and would create an urban link to Jerusalem. The differences over this plan are real enough (and long-standing), but it is not at all certain that they merit the attention given at this time. At least some of attention may have been generated by those who are eager—for various reasons—to see a rift emerge between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and President George W. Bush. (For certain elements of the Israeli right wing, it has become almost essential to prove that Sharon is not telling the truth, and the U.S. is not "really" committed to support the Israeli position on the future of the settlement blocs.) The real agenda of this crucial meeting at the president's ranch concerned, above all, the urgent need for action on the Iranian nuclear effort, which is fast approaching the point of no return; as well as other aspects of the broader regional agenda, launched by the administration, and the profound ways in which they have transformed Israel's strategic environment; and the more immediate questions related to the implementation within the next three months of the Disengagement Plan. But all these items seemed to be overshadowed by the "E-1 question," and by the forceful Palestinian complaint that this project, if carried out, would slice the West Bank into two and would render it impossible to create a contiguous Palestinian state. However, a closer look at the map, and at the timetables, would indicate that what is at stake is not the possibility of implementing Stage II of the Road Map, but rather the decisive, though not necessarily immediate, battle for the future of Jerusalem, which is perhaps the most delicate and explosive of all Stage III (permanent status) issues. Ma'aleh Adumim, whether linked to Jerusalem by a narrow road or by a broad built-up zone, does not cut in half the West Bank; it is quite conceivable to construct a good road that will carry people and goods from Ramallah to Bethlehem—either under Ma'aleh Adumim or aroumd it to the east—so that the Palestinians do not have to go through Israeli checkpoints. On the other hand, the construction at E-1 would indeed tighten Israeli control over the eastern approaches of Jerusalem, thus making it more difficult to redivide the city (which is, indeed, Sharon's intent; he begins every meeting with foreign dignitaries with a reference to the unity of Israel's capital, and claims, with some reason, to be upholding Yitzhak Rabin's own legacy on this question). The battle for Jerusalem, which has always been at the core of the conflict, is thus reemerging, well in advance of the actual resumption of negotiations. Sunday's clashes with far-right Jewish elements who wanted (but failed) to use the Temple Mount to trigger a crisis that would derail the disengagement; the equally ugly responses by some Muslims, who do not want the feet of Jews to "defile" the Haram al-Sharif; the E-1 controversy; and the attempt by the PA leadership to move directly to Permanent Status negotiations, including Jerusalem—all are opening shots in this new round of political warfare (which, for now at least, have not been translated into actual fighting, beyond the unrelated deterioration in Gaza). The tensions over the city will not go away, even if the deft handling by the police prevented a conflagration on the first day of Nisan 5765 (April 10), the occasion chosen by the radicals to attempt their provocative ascent. Was it wise, however, for the Israeli government to add fuel to the crisis by reviving the debate over the E-1 plans? After all, the construction itself will not start for some years, and the present timing, apparently harmful to Mahmoud Abbas in his internal struggle with Hamas, could not have been worse. Explanations based on sheer folly or inattention to detail are indeed, very often, the most plausible. Yet there is another way of looking at this "crisis," which may have been somewhat more orchestrated than meets the eye. If timing is at the root of the trouble here, timing—i.e., an agreement to delay—could easily be part of the solution. Meanwhile, the overt pressure on Israel could be used by the U.S. to show Abbas that there is some degree of even-handedness at work; and thus it would make it easier for Bush to require him: To help coordinate disengagement plans with Israel, particularly on the security framework; To break the present mold of inaction and take effective measures against the terrorists (who are even now raining mortar shells on Gush Katif); To abandon the unworkable push for "Stage III Now!" and prepare the ground for an acceptable interim agreement, once the preconditions (an end to terror) are met. This is reminiscent, one might say, of the Jewish folktale about a poor man who comes to his rabbi to cry over the incredible crush he and his large family are enduring in a small one-room hovel; the rabbi's advice, much to the man's surprise, is to add a goat to the household! Two weeks later, when told they may now send the goat out, the family suddenly feels so much better, breathing fresh air in their very tiny but comfortable home. The E-1 plan, in other words, may not mean much on the ground for years to come—but it has proven a useful device in demonstrating to the Palestinians, and their leaders, that Israel is ready to struggle for Jerusalem, while, at the same time, showing that the U.S. is not automatically allied with Israel on all issues. If taken off the agenda (for the time being) under U.S. pressure, E-1 could become the Palestinians' "rabbi's goat"—i.e., the extra element whose removal makes it easier to adjust to other demands. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are currently subscribed to israelad_h as: jblankfort@earthlink.net. Bush tour Bush's Crawford, Texas farm Photo: AP WASHINGTON Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met Vice President Dick Cheney and Deputy National Security Adviser Elliott Abrams for the second time in two days Tuesday, with the focus this time on the entire Middle East, not the Palestinians. Officials in Sharon's entourage said Tuesday's talks dealt with the whole range of regional issues, with particular attention paid to Iran's nuclear threat, and possible responses if Teheran continues its march toward nuclear arms capabilities. Senior Israeli officials said Tuesday that the decision on when to bring the Iranian issue to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions should not be dragged out indefinitely. The important time issue to keep in mind, they said, was not the date when Iran would acquire a nuclear bomb, but rather when it would pass the "threshold of no return" and develop the technology that would allow it – in the future – to build such a weapon. Sharon told US President George W. Bush on Monday that Iran was only one technological step away from enriching uranium and, from that point, achieving nuclear capability was just around the corner, Channel 2 reported. Sharon's military secretary, Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant, presented to Bush updated documents and satellite images of Iran's nuclear program. According to Israel Radio, the images showed that the Iranian nuclear program was at a "very advanced" stage. Israeli officials called on the US urgently to present the issue before the Security Council, which would enable the imposing of sanctions on Teheran. Sharon met Cheney and Abrams for lunch at the Blair House, where the prime minister is staying. These talks also dealt with other regional issues, according to Israeli officials, such as the situations in Lebanon and Syria. Both Cheney and Abrams took part in Sharon's talks Monday with Bush at his Crawford ranch. On Tuesday evening, Sharon was slated to meet a group of some 26 Jewish senators and congressmen (13 of the country's 100 senators are Jewish), followed by a meeting with outgoing Deputy Defense Minister Paul Wolfowitz, who is slated to become the next head of the World Bank, followed by a dinner with House and Senate leaders from both parties. Sharon is scheduled to leave Washington Wednesday afternoon and arrive back in Israel on Thursday. In Israel, Likud rebel leader Uzi Landau called Sharon's trip to Washington "a big failure." He said that Sharon lost his credibility because he failed to obtain American support to expand large settlement blocs. "If the trip was intended to bring achievements, it was a waste of time," Landau said. "Sharon didn't need to go to Texas to raise the disputes we knew about before and to get nothing in return except for the same ambiguous statements he received from Bush last year. Now the Americans not only don't support building in settlements, they won't even allow natural growth in Ma'aleh Adumim." Landau also criticized Sharon for telling NBC that the tense atmosphere in Israel could lead to civil war. Landau said that "it is improper to attack the people of Israel in a foreign land, and it is even worse for a prime minister to use the foreign press to attack his political rivals." | Israel hands Bush documents of Iran nuclear sites 4/12/2005 5:00:00 PM GMT Washington and Israel claim that Iran is covertly trying to develop a nuclear weapons’ programme Ariel Sharon's military adviser General Yoav Gallan has reportedly handed Bush documents and aerial photos of Iranian nuclear installations during the Israeli prime minister's Monday meeting with the U.S. President George W. Bush, Israeli public radio reported on Tuesday. Gallan, who accompanied Sharon in his summit with Bush at his Texas ranch, presented the photos together with information the Israeli intelligence services gathered on the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme, the Israeli radio added, without mentioning how the photos were taken. It just said that the images showed that the Iranian nuclear programme was at a “very advanced” stage. Meanwhile, White House spokesman Scott McClellan on the other hand, confirmed the two leaders had “talked about their shared concern about Iran's intentions with their nuclear programme”. Israeli and U.S. officials couldn't be available for comment. Israel has previously made clear it considers all options legitimate for preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear bomb. Analysts say that the Jewish state wouldn't resort to force unless being supported by its chief ally the United States. "We are not managing to get the Americans to talk about what will happen if the diplomatic efforts fail and Iran resumes enriching uranium, putting it on track to an atomic bomb," a senior defense official as saying. Washington and Israel have repeatedly accused Iran of covertly trying to develop a nuclear weapons’ programme, a charge denied by Tehran, which maintains it needs nuclear power as an alternative energy source. Although Israel has never publicly acknowledged that it maintains a nuclear arsenal, foreign experts assert it has between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads. Washington has previously expressed its support to the ongoing EU diplomatic initiative to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear program, however, the U.S. President George W. Bush has said that he won't rule out the possibility of military strikes. http://www.aljazeera.com/me.asp?service_ID=7919 | | | | Alpha | | Posted: Wed Apr 13, 2005 5:16 am Post subject: PM calls on Bush for more pressure against Iran |
| PM calls on Bush for more pressure against Iran By Aluf Benn, Haaretz Correspondent WASHINGTON - Prime Minister Ariel Sharon presented President George W. Bush with the latest Israeli intelligence assessments of Iran's nuclear weapons program, and called on Bush to step up the diplomatic efforts to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb. A source in Sharon's entourage said that Iran is sensitive to pressure, "and it is still possible to influence it." Sharon's aides said predawn on Wednesday that Israel is not initiating or leading an offensive against Iran but that Israel and the U.S. are partners in the struggle against its nuclear threat, Israel Radio said. Advertisement The prime minister's aides said "there is very little time" and called to bring the issue up at the UN Security Council. Members of Sharon's entourage expressed their concern that certain countries in Europe might allow Iran to join the other nuclear nations. They said that such a scenario would be intolerable, since Iran has been known to call for the destruction of Israel and the Jews. In Washington, Sharon met U.S. Vice President Richard Cheney for 90 minutes. A senior Israeli official said they discussed U.S. and Israeli strategic issues and the Iranian nuclear threat. Sharon also met with U.S. Congressmen and was slated to meet with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz early Wednesday. Bush and Sharon discuss Iran The Iranian issue was the main point of Monday's discussion during the lunch Bush served at his ranch to Sharon and the Israeli officials who accompanied him. The premier's military secretary, Maj. Gen. Yoav Gallant, delivered a presentation with an analysis of the latest satellite imagery taken above Iran's nuclear development facilities, explaining how those facilities have expanded since 2002. Israeli intelligence assessments say that Iran is using the diplomatic freeze around its nuclear program to continue developing various elements necessary to acquire nuclear capability. At the same time, Iran is also believed to be keeping its promise to the European Triad - France, Germany and Britain - to suspend its uranium enrichment programs using the centrifuges it has built. But it is believed that the Iranians are developing other elements in their nuclear program, not covered by the promises to the Europeans. Israel believes that the Iranians are not enriching uranium because of technical difficulties. "They are still missing some parts, but they are very close to achieving full capability to produce enriched uranium," said a source in Sharon's entourage. The Israeli position, presented to Bush, is that the current status quo is dangerous because it enables the Iranians to continue their efforts to produce the bomb. There is concern in Israel that the Europeans will make do with the temporary suspension and avoid any pressure on Iran to halt the project completely. Iran could proceed quietly toward uranium enrichment and then create an international crisis enabling it to withdraw from the commitments it made to the Europeans and start accelerated production of fissionable material. Sharon wants the U.S. to pressure the Europeans to move the Iranian case to the UN Security Council, which can impose sanctions on Iran. Israel wants the U.S. and Europe to set a clear timetable for halting the Iranian project, and to prepare for the coming crisis in such a way that would intensify the pressure on Iran to halt its nuclear weapons program. Arnon Regular adds: U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas Tuesday afternoon to brief him on the Sharon-Bush talks, and on the American position regarding construction in the settlement blocs in particular and the territories in general. Senior Palestinian sources said that Rice made clear to Abbas that the American position is against any construction in the territories, and that the president's position is that the settlements issue will be resolved in the final status negotiations and not by creating facts on the ground. The Palestinian government, convened Tuesday by PA Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia, demanded that the U.S. explicitly state its opposition to construction in the settlement blocs and demand immediate action against the illegal outposts. The government stated that the PA does not recognize the legitimacy of the settlement blocs, and regards any understandings between Israel and the U.S. on the matter to be prejudicial to the discussions for a final status agreement. http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=564243 | | | | Alpha | | Posted: Wed Apr 13, 2005 5:18 am Post subject: Iranian nuke threat takes center stage |
| Iranian nuke threat takes center stage Prime Minister Ariel Sharon discusses Teheran's nuclear program with U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney Tuesday; Sharon also expected to discuss sale of Gaza homes to World Bank with Paul Wolfowitz By Attila Somfalvi WASHINGTON - The Iranian nuclear threat took center stage in a meeting between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney in Washington Tuesday. Sharon has already presented Israel's intelligence assessment on the matter in his meeting with President Bush in Texas, but took the opportunity to address several strategic issues during the session with Cheney. The prime minister warned that understandings formulated by Europe and the international community in their dealings with Teheran allow the Iranians to secretly advance their nuclear program. Iranian Threat 'Air force ready - if necessary' / By Ynetnews Response available should Israel decide to strike Iran, air force chief says. "We don't have much time" Full Story However, Israel estimates Iran has not yet reached the point of no return, Sharon said. The prime minister was also scheduled to meet with Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, who is slated to become the next World Bank president. During the meeting, the two were expected to discuss the World Bank‘s role in the pullout plan - possibly in the form of purchasing evacuated homes should they be left intact. ‘Abbas must do more’ Earlier Tuesday, Sharon spoke to foreign correspondents, mostly American, and repeated his call on Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to act against terror groups. “I have known him for many years,” Sharon said. “There is no doubt he represents a departure from Yasser Arafat's strategy of terror." However, the prime minister noted, Abbas must do more in order to disarm terror groups. Otherwise, he said, ” we can't move forward from the pre-road map stage." Sharon has characterized his 11th visit to the U.S. as more successful than any of the previous ones, in a bid to dismiss suggestions of significant disagreements with the American Administration over the issue of West Bank construction. The Americans, meanwhile, are wasting no time in turning the disengagement into a coordinated exit, as opposed to a unilateral move. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has already spoken with Abbas, briefed him on the meetings with Sharon, and noted a visit by the Palestinian leader to the White House would be arranged soon. However, sources close to Sharon said an Abbas visit may not be on the agenda at this time in light of the fragile security situation. -Yitzhak Benhorin also contributed to the report http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3071835,00.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Iran's nuclear program, originally started by Americans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran's_nuclear_program Quote: By 1975, The US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, had signed National Security Decision Memorandum 292, titled "U.S.-Iran Nuclear Cooperation," which laid out the details of the sale of nuclear energy equipment to Iran projected to bring U.S. corporations more than $6 billion in revenue. At the time, Iran was pumping as much as 6 million barrels of oil a day, compared with an average of about 4 million barrels daily today. President Gerald R. Ford even signed a directive in 1976 offering Tehran the chance to buy and operate a U.S.-built reprocessing facility for extracting plutonium from nuclear reactor fuel.
