SCOTT RITTER SAYS U.S. PLANS JUNE ATTACK ON IRAN, ‘COOKED’ JAN. 30 IRAQI ELECTION RESULTS

By Mark Jensen

United for Peace of Pierce County (WA)
February 19, 2005

Scott Ritter, appearing with journalist Dahr Jamail yesterday in Washington State, dropped two shocking bombshells in a talk delivered to a packed house in Olympia's Capitol Theater. The ex-Marine turned UNSCOM weapons inspector said that George W. Bush has "signed off" on plans to bomb Iran in June 2005, and claimed the U.S. manipulated the results of the recent Jan. 30 elections in Iraq.

Olympians like to call the Capitol Theater "historic," but it's doubtful whether the eighty-year-old edifice has ever been the scene of more portentous revelations.

The principal theme of Scott Ritter's talk was Americans’ duty to protect the U.S. Constitution by taking action to bring an end to the illegal war in Iraq. But in passing, the former UNSCOM weapons inspector stunned his listeners with two pronouncements. Ritter said plans for a June attack on Iran have been submitted to President George W. Bush, and that the president has approved them. He also asserted that knowledgeable sources say U.S. officials "cooked" the results of the Jan. 30 elections in Iraq.

On Iran, Ritter said that President George W. Bush has received and signed off on orders for an aerial attack on Iran planned for June 2005. Its purported goal is the destruction of Iran's alleged program to develop nuclear weapons, but Ritter said neoconservatives in the administration also expected that the attack would set in motion a chain of events leading to regime change in the oil-rich nation of 70 million -- a possibility Ritter regards with the greatest skepticism.

The former Marine also said that the Jan. 30 elections, which George W. Bush has called "a turning point in the history of Iraq, a milestone in the advance of freedom," were not so free after all. Ritter said that U.S. authorities in Iraq had manipulated the results in order to reduce the percentage of the vote received by the United Iraqi Alliance from 56% to 48%.

Asked by UFPPC's Ted Nation about this shocker, Ritter said an official involved in the manipulation was the source, and that this would soon be reported by a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist in a major metropolitan magazine -- an obvious allusion to New Yorker reporter Seymour M. Hersh.

On Jan. 17, the New Yorker posted an article by Hersh entitled The Coming Wars (New Yorker, January 24-31, 2005). In it, the well-known investigative journalist claimed that for the Bush administration, "The next strategic target [is] Iran." Hersh also reported that "The Administration has been conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran at least since last summer." According to Hersh, "Defense Department civilians, under the leadership of Douglas Feith, have been working with Israeli planners and consultants to develop and refine potential nuclear, chemical-weapons, and missile targets inside Iran. . . . Strategists at the headquarters of the U.S. Central Command, in Tampa, Florida, have been asked to revise the military's war plan, providing for a maximum ground and air invasion of Iran. . . . The hawks in the Administration believe that it will soon become clear that the Europeans’ negotiated approach [to Iran] cannot succeed, and that at that time the Administration will act."

Scott Ritter said that although the peace movement failed to stop the war in Iraq, it had a chance to stop the expansion of the war to other nations like Iran and Syria. He held up the specter of a day when the Iraq war might be remembered as a relatively minor event that preceded an even greater conflagration.

Scott Ritter's talk was the culmination of a long evening devoted to discussion of Iraq and U.S. foreign policy. Before Ritter spoke, Dahr Jamail narrated a slide show on Iraq focusing on Fallujah. He showed more than a hundred vivid photographs taken in Iraq, mostly by himself. Many of them showed the horrific slaughter of civilians.

Dahr Jamail argued that U.S. mainstream media sources are complicit in the war and help sustain support for it by deliberately downplaying the truth about the devastation and death it is causing.

Jamail was, until recently, one of the few unembedded journalists in Iraq and one of the only independent ones. His reports have gained a substantial following and are available online at dahrjamailiraq.com.

Friday evening's event in Olympia was sponsored by South Puget Sound Community College's Student Activities Board, Veterans for Peace, 100 Thousand and Counting, Olympia Movement for Justice & Peace, and United for Peace of Pierce County.

Neocon Middle East Policy: 'Clean Break' Damage Assessment

Neocon Middle East Policy:

The 'Clean Break' Plan Damage Assessment

http://www.irmep.org/cbda.htm

A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm is a definitive Middle East Policy strategy authored and implemented by operatives in the highest levels of the US government.

There is just one problem. The plan was a strategy for Israel , not the United States of America .

Neocon Middle East Policy reviews strategies and consequences of the "Clean Break" plan authored by Richard Perle, David Wurmser, and Douglas Feith in 1996. It analyzes the core assumptions of the policy, cost of tactics that have already been implemented and discusses the likelihood others will be executed in the future.

Neocon Middle East Policy then turns to the most difficult questions of all, "Can a policy crafted for a foreign government and presented to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu serve as a blueprint for US regional policy? At what cost in credibility, blood, treasure and American integrity? At what cost to Israel?" Neocon Middle East Policy is a must-read for anyone concerned about the convergence of US and Israeli foreign policy in the Middle East.

Bush's Iraq Exit Strategy-We'll go thru Iran

http://www.theonion.com/news/index.php?issue=4110&n=0&ref=myy

WASHINGTON, DC—Almost a year after the cessation of major combat and a month after the nation's first free democratic elections, President Bush unveiled the coalition forces' strategy for exiting Iraq.

Above: Bush announces the pullout of Iraq through Iran.

"I'm pleased to announce that the Department of Defense and I have formulated a plan for a speedy withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq," Bush announced Monday morning. "We'll just go through Iran."

Bush said the U.S. Army, which deposed Iran's longtime enemy Saddam Hussein, should be welcomed with open arms by the Islamic-fundamentalist state.

"And Iran's so nearby," Bush said. "It's only a hop, skip, and a jump to the east."

According to White House officials, coalition air units will leave forward air bases in Iraq and transport munitions to undisclosed locations in Iran. After 72 to 96 hours of aerial-bomb retreats, armored-cavalry units will retreat across the Zagros mountains in tanks, armored personnel carriers, and strike helicopters. The balance of the 120,000 troops will exit into the oil-rich borderlands around the Shatt-al-Arab region within 30 days.

Pentagon sources said U.S. Central Command has been formulating the exit plan under guidelines set by Bush.

"The fact is, we've accomplished our goals in Iraq," said General George Casey, the commander of coalition forces in the Iraqi theater. "Now, it's time to bring our men and women home—via Iran."

Questions have been raised about the unprecedented size of the withdrawal budget.

"I'm asking Congress to approve a $187-billion budget to enable us to exit as smoothly as possible," said Casey, whose budget request includes several hundred additional M1A1 Abrams battle tanks, 72 new C-130 cargo planes, and two brigades of artillery. "We're concerned about the safety of our troops, so we need to have the capacity to deal with insurgent forces all the way from the Iraqi border through to Tehran."

Casey has requested a budget increase for the Pentagon, so that the government can reward recruits who serve in the U.S. mission to exit Iraq.

Above: Some of the Iranian citizens U.S. troops will meet as they pass through Iran.

"The plan also includes a minor stopover for refueling and provisional replenishment in Syria," Casey said. "But I don't expect we'll need more than 50,000 additional troops for that stretch of the Iraq pullout."

Bush's plan has met with widespread support.

"The people who said Iraq was a quagmire and that the president would never get our troops out are now eating crow," said Sean Hannity on his popular radio show Tuesday. "Of course, I don't expect anyone will have the honor to come forward and actually admit that they were wrong to question our commander-in-chief."

Sioux Falls, SD's Dianne Haverbuck, who has two sons in the military, said she was pleased to hear of the impending exit.

"Don and Kenneth have already been in Iraq an extra four months, so it's so good to hear that they'll finally be leaving that dangerous place," Haverbuck said. "I can't tell you how happy I was when the president said—what was it? I wrote it down. 'Getting our troops out of the Middle East and back home to their families is a viable long-term goal.'"

"I can't wait to see the boys," Haverbuck added.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hoseini-Khamenei welcomed the exit plan.

"Let the Allied armies come to Iran," Khamenei said. "I believe I can assure you that, if they do withdraw here, their brothers-in-arms in the Islamic Republican Army, the Revolutionary Guards Corps, the Quds special forces units, and the Basij Popular Mobilization Army will no doubt do everything they can to make the troops' trip back home memorable."

Ritter: Iran Attack On for June

“[Scott] Ritter said that President George W. Bush has received and signed off on orders for an aerial attack on Iran planned for June 2005,” writes Mark Jensen on the United for Peace of Pierce County web site. “Its purported goal is the destruction of Iran’s alleged program to develop nuclear weapons, but Ritter said neoconservatives in the administration also expected that the attack would set in motion a chain of events leading to regime change in the oil-rich nation of 70 million—a possibility Ritter regards with the greatest skepticism.” Ritter, a former UNSCOM weapons inspector in Iraq and vehement critic of Bush and the Strausscons, made the comment during a talk in Olympia, Washington, last week. Ritter also said the so-called election last month in Iraq was a heavily stage managed affair.

Ritter did not provide details, or did he reveal his source for this information, saying only that “an official involved in the [election] manipulation was the source” and details would be soon “reported by a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist in a major metropolitan magazine,” a likely reference to Seymour Hersh.

Of course, all of this makes perfect sense. Bush has his “mandate” (not that he needs one), the Strausscons are firmly in the driver’s seat, and the next phase of the Strausscon plan is on the front burner, nearing a roiling boil. Condi Rice, on a consensus shopping tour of Europe, “reportedly rejected the European offer [on a joint strategy towards Iran’s nuclear program], calling instead for Iran’s political isolation and economic blockade, reports the German news magazine Der Spiegel. “Under the deal, the Americans would support Europe’s diplomatic Iran initiative, however should the talks fail, the Europeans would vote for tough US-backed UN economic sanctions against Iran.”

“The hawks in the Administration believe that it will soon become clear that the Europeans’ negotiated approach cannot succeed, and that at that time the Administration will act,” Seymour Hersh wrote in the New Yorker last month. “The immediate goals of the attacks would be to destroy, or at least temporarily derail, Iran’s ability to go nuclear. But there are other, equally purposeful, motives at work. The government consultant told me that the hawks in the Pentagon, in private discussions, have been urging a limited attack on Iran because they believe it could lead to a toppling of the religious leadership.”

Meanwhile, the Israelis are turning up the heat for an attack. “Israel is privately pushing the United States to stop Iran’s nuclear program, hinting that Tel Aviv may have no choice but to attack Tehran’s nuclear facilities, U.S. defense officials say,” al-Jazeera reports. “The defense officials said that Israel isn’t concerned about Iran in a ‘you attack or we do’ warning to the U.S., but they noted that top Israeli officials have repeatedly raised Iran’s nuclear program during their visits to Washington over the past 18 months,” a nuclear program that, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, has no substance. “On Iran, there really hasn’t been much development, neither as a result of our inspections or as a result of intelligence,” IAEA director, Mohamed ElBaradei, told the Washington Post on February 16.

Iran’s illusory nuke program is, of course, simply a pretext, more fear-mongering on the part of the Likudite-Strausscon faction. Far more important to Bush’s clique of Zionists is reducing Iran to rubble—taking out its civilian infrastructure, as it did in Iraq, and fomenting chaos and ethnic squabbles in the hope of balkanizing the nation of around 70 million people. Iran does not have the ethnic mix required, or not to the degree Iraq does. More than half of the population is Persian with much smaller numbers of Azeri, Gilaki, Mazandarani, Kurd, Arab, Lur, Baloch, Turkmen, and other ethnic groups. The Strausscons intend to agitate these minorities against the Persian majority and the Shia theocracy ruling Iran.

“You can’t be sure after an attack that you’ll get away with it,” Shahram Chubin, an Iranian scholar who is the director of research at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, told Hersh last month. “Meanwhile, they’d be waiting for an Iranian counter-attack that could be military or terrorist or diplomatic. Iran has long-range missiles and ties to Hezbollah, which has drones—you can’t begin to think of what they’d do in response.”

Drones or no, if Bush and the Israelis attack Iran, there will be hell to pay and large swaths of the Middle East will erupt in flames. I believe this is precisely what the Strausscons and the Likudites want—chaos, ethnic strife, endless suicide and car bombs, the current situation in Iraq magnified and spread across the Arab and Muslim Middle East. If Saudi Arabia catches fire—and you bet it will if Iran and in turn Lebanon explode—this will serve as an ideal pretext to seriously launch the Likudite-Strausscon version of World War IV and thus mobilize a sleepy American public, tired of war and terrorism (Strausscons call this a lack of “stomach"). Another “terrorist event” to rival September 11, 2001, blamed on Iran or Shia terrorists, would go a long way to mobilizing public sentiment, as did the sinking of the Maine, the Lusitania, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the bogus attack in the Gulf of Tonkin.

- The Draft will Start in June 2005
by Strait Gate Ministries
Pending Draft Legislation Targeted for Spring 2005

There is pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills: S 89 and HR 163) which will time the program's initiation so the draft can begin at early as Spring 2005 -- just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public's attention has been on the elections, so our action on this is needed immediately.

$28 million has been added to the 2004 Selective Service System (SSS) budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. Selective Service must report to Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation. Please see website: www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html to view the sss annual performance plan - fiscal year 2004.

The Pentagon has quietly begun a public campaign to fill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots nationwide. Though this is an unpopular election year topic, military experts and influential members of congress are suggesting that if Rumsfeld's prediction of a "long, hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan [and a permanent state of war on "terrorism"] proves accurate, the U.S. may have no choice but to draft.

Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and HR 163 forward this year, http://www.hslda.org/legislation/na...s89/default.asp entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18 -26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active bills currently sit in the committee on armed services.

Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era.

College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

Even those voters who currently support US actions abroad may still object to this move, knowing their own children or grandchildren will not have a say about whether to fight. Not that it should make a difference, but this plan, among other things, eliminates higher education as a shelter and includes women in the draft.

The public has a right to air their opinions about such an important decision.

IAF: Israel must be prepared for an air strike on Iran
By Haaretz Staff and The Associated Press

Israel Air Force Commander-in-Chief Major General Eliezer Shakedi said
Monday that Israel must be prepared for an air strike on Iran in light
of its nuclear activity.
But in a meeting with reporters, Shakedi wouldn't say whether he
thought Israel was capable of carrying out such a mission alone, as it
did when it bombed an unfinished Iraqi nuclear reactor near Baghdad in
1981.

When asked whether Israel has a plan for the Iranian nuclear program,
Shakedi replied, "You know that for obvious reasons, I won't say even a
word."

But when asked whether he was confident the air force could provide the
answer to the Iranian threat, Shakedi replied, "I must be prepared for
everything."

The Israeli air force commander also discussed the fluid situation in
neighboring Lebanon.

The assassination of former Lebanese PM Rafik Hariri "can create a new
picture in Lebanon," Shakedi said.

With Syria, Hezbollah guerrillas and Hezbollah's Iranian benefactors
all operating in Lebanon, "we understand who has interests" in Hariri
being out of the picture, he said.

Asked whether the IAF has changed its deployment since the
assassination, he replied, "Of course we won't let the other side hit
us."

"We have a job to protect the citizens of Israel," Shakedi said. "I
hope that there won't be a war - but you know, no one knows."
