As world leaders prepare to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland, some 500 nationalists, including 19 members of the Russian Duma, the lower house of parliament, wrote that the hatred of Jews was justified. They argued that most criminal cases of ethnic hatred were started by Jews while "Russian patriots" were simply acting in self-defence when promoting their nationalistic slogans. "Let us assure you, Mr Prosecutor-General, that there are a large number of well-established facts which lead to the indisputable conclusion: the negative assessment by Russian patriots of typical Jewish qualities and [their] actions against non-Jews are based on true facts and what is more these actions are not accidental, but prescribed by Judaism and have been practised over the past 2000 years," the letter said. "Therefore, statements and publications against Jews are self-defence, which may not be stylistically correct, but justified in its essence." The letter, signed by 15 members of the nationalist Rodina (Motherland) party and four members of the Communist party, is the latest signal of growing chauvinism and xenophobia which over the past few years has spilled into mainstream Russian politics. "A few years ago nationalistic statements were considered unacceptable. Now they are entering the main-stream of Russian politics," said Galina Kozhevnikova, the author of a recent report on radical nationalism in Russia. She says that while it would be wrong to say that President Vladimir Putin - who is due to attend the Auschwitz memorial - provokes xenophobia, "he does little to prevent it either". The letter comes less than two weeks after two Rabbis were attacked in a Moscow subway by a group of youths. Alexander Lakshin, a US citizen and one of the victims of the attack, said he and his friend with two teenage brothers-in-law were on their way home when they were chased by a group of young people. "We told the kids to run for their lives. But they could not run fast enough, so we took their hands and dragged them through the underpass," Mr Lakshin said. Mr Lakshin managed to protect the children, but was kicked to the ground and beaten. "They shouted the usual 'kill the Yids' and smashed a bottle on my head." Bleeding, he managed to escape to a 24-hour grocery store. "There were two security guards there and we asked them to call the police. But all they said was: 'Please leave - you will stain our shop with your blood'." According to Global Forum Against Anti-Semitism, an Israeli government body, the number of violent anti-Semitic incidents in Russia rose from four to 55 in the past year. Another report on global anti-Semitism released by the US State Department says the number of skinheads who have committed most of these crimes has increased from few dozen in 1992 to more than 50,000 in 2004. Attacks by skinheads and neo-Nazis in Russia are not limited to Jews. People from the Caucasus, Muslims and Africans are regularly subjected to ethnic crimes. According to recent opinion polls, 53 per cent of Russia's population subscribe to the idea of "Russia for the Russians", 48 per cent think that the influence of Jews in politics and business should be restricted and 43 per cent say there should be restrictions on natives of the Caucasus living in Russia. Two nationalistic parties gained 20 per cent in the last parliamentary elections. Xenophobia is the main election platform of the Rodina party, which was brought to life by Kremlin spin-doctors before last year's parliamentary elections to take votes from the Communists and guarantee a majority for the pro-Kremlin United Russia party. However, over the past year, Rodina's nationalistic ideas appear to have gained their own momentum. "We have historic experience of this. In a letter dated January 13, about 20 members of the lower parliament house, the State Duma, asked Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov to investigate their claims and, if they are confirmed, to launch proceedings "on the prohibition in our country of all religious and ethnic Jewish organizations as extremist." Arguing that Jews were to blame for anti-Semitism, the authors of the letter want Jewish groups outlawed based on legislation against extremism and fomenting ethnic discord. "The negative assessments by Russian patriots of the qualities and actions against non-Jews that are typical of Jews correspond to the truth, indeed these actions are not random but prescribed in Judaism and have been practiced for two centuries," says the letter, faxed in part to The Associated Press by the office of lawmaker Alexander Krutov. "Thus," it says, "the statements and publications against Jews that have incriminated patriots are self-defense, which is not always stylistically correct but is justified in essence". The stunning call to ban all Jewish groups comes amid concerns of persistent anti-Semitism that continues to plague Russia. Jewish leaders have praised President Vladimir Putin's government for encouraging religious tolerance, but rights groups accuse the authorities of failing to adequately prosecute the perpetrators of anti-Semitic and racial violence. Russia's chief rabbi, Berel Lazar, said the lawmakers were either insane or "quite sane but limitlessly cynical" and were hoping to win support "by playing the anti-Semitic card." Speaking with Israel Radio, Lazar called on Russia's chief prosecutor to move to expel the legislators from the parliament since, he said, they were acting against all religions and were harming Russia. "Everyone who read this letter surely understood that something irregular had taken place. It is a known fact that there are those in parliament who posses these views. However, it has been a while since an anti-Jewish theme has been raised, and suddenly everyone is talking about it", Lazar told the radio. According to the rabbi, "The timing was not coincidental and was made on the same day in which the UN commemorated 60 years since the liberation of Nazi death camps. President Putin is slated to visit Auschwitz in the near future and they probably wanted to express their objection to the upcoming visit by sending this letter." With Putin planning to join events this week commemorating the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops, Russia's Holocaust Foundation head Alla Gerber said it was "horrible that as we're marking the 60th anniversary of this tragic and great day ... we can speak of the danger of fascism in the countries that defeated fascism." She said that while the Russian state itself is no longer anti-Semitic, there are "anti-Semitic campaigns that are led by all sorts of organizations." "The economic situation is ripe for this, an enemy is needed, and the enemy is well-known, traditional," Gerber said. Responding to the lawmakers' letter, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said on Israel Radio that the Israeli government "will act on every level to combat this. We do not let any group or country live peacefully with phenomena like these." "There is a large international call to arms against anti-Semitic incidents anywhere in the world. To my great sorrow, these incidents have been happening a lot lately, but we have to fight anti-Semitism anywhere it is." Echoing anti-Semitic tracts of the Czarist era, the letter's authors accuse Jews of working against the interests of the countries where they live and of monopolizing power worldwide. They say the United States "has become an instrument for achieving the global aims of Judaism." "It is possible to say that the entire democratic world today is under the monetary and political control of international Judaism, which high-profile bankers are openly proud of," the letter says. Along with outlawing Jewish organizations, the lawmakers call for the prosecution of "individuals responsible for providing these groups with state and municipal property, privileges and state financing." Representatives of Russian society demand from the Procurator General of the Russian Federation the suppression of illegal propagation of Jewish national and religious extremism. Dear Mr. Procurator General: On 18 December 2003 the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir V. Putin, brought up the following statistics in the course of a televised address: in 1999 there were four convictions under article 282 of the Russian Federation Criminal Code on inciting inter-ethnic hatred. In 2000 there were 10. And in 2003 “more than 60 criminal investigations were made into cases of inciting inter-ethnic discord. Who is shouting “stop, thief!”? The overwhelming majority of these cases are initiated by Jewish activists or organizations, who charge their defendants with the “anti-Semitism.” But the overwhelming majority of those accused and convicted are Russian patriots. Now they have been joined by the well-known independent politician and pamphleteer, the former head of Goskompechat’ (the State Publishing Commission) B. S. Mironov. We recognize that the statements of Russian patriots regarding Jews frequently have a sharply negative and excessively emotional character, unacceptable in public discussion, and constitute what the law regards as extremism. None of the above-mentioned trials, however, ever examined the reason for this sharpness, the original source of this extremism in the given inter-ethnic conflict. Indeed the chief problem that must be elucidated in investigations and trials is: do the sharply negative assessments of the Jews by Russian patriots correspond in essence to the truth about the Jews (against whom they are directed) or do they not? If they do not correspond to the truth about the Jews, then the discussion can deal with the defamation of Jews and with the incitement of religious and inter-ethnic discord. But if they do correspond to the truth, then such assessments, apart from and independent of their emotionalism, cannot be qualified as defamatory, as incitement to discord, and the like. (For example, to say a decent person is a criminal is defamatory to him; but to name someone who has committed a crime a criminal - this is a truthful statement of facts.) Furthermore, since there are two sides in this inter-ethnic conflict (the accuser and the accused), it follows that one must clear up: which of the sides actually started this conflict in the first place and was responsible for it, and whether the actions of the accused might not be acts of self-defense in response to acts of aggression by the accusing side? We ask you to verify, Mr. Procurator General, that on these matters there is a large quantity of universally recognized facts and sources from around the world, on the basis of which it is possible to draw the indisputable conclusion that: the Russian patriots’ negative assessments of typical Jewish qualities and actions with respect to non-Jews correspond to truth; it being known that these actions are not chance occurrences, but are prescribed in Judaism and have been practiced for two millenia. Thus, the incriminating statements and publications made by patriots against the Jews constitute self-defense, which may not always be correct in terms of style, but remains nevertheless justified in essence. The Morality of Jewish Fascism To corroborate this, we draw your attention to the book Kitsur Shulkhan Arukh officially published in Moscow in 2001 by the Congress of Jewish Religious Organizations and Associations in Russia (KEROOR). This is a condensed version of the Jewish law code, the Sulkhan Arukh, compiled several centuries ago on the basis of the Talmud and required in practice to this day. In the introduction to the book the head of KEROOR, Rabbi Zinoviy Kogan makes the frank acknowledgement (the italics are ours) that: “The editorial council of KEROOR considered it necessary in this translation to omit some instructions of the halakha [Jewish law] . . . whose inclusion in the publication in the Russian language would be perceived by the population of Russia, which does not adhere to Judaism, as an unprovoked insult. The reader who wishes to read the Kitsur Shulkhan Arukh in the ideally complete volume, is invited to come to a yeshiva in order to study this and many other holy books in the original.” That is, one of the leaders of Russian Jewry himself recognized that some regulations of the Judaic code of behavior were insulting to the non-Jewish population of Russia, but considers it possible to invite his fellow tribesmen to yeshivas – the Jewish schools, which are financed from the state and local budgets – to study these insults. Yet, even in this expurgated publication we find the following provisions: - In the “Laws about the idolatry” it is stated that “it is forbidden to use the figure of two crossed sticks, which they worship.” That is to say, Christianity is considered a variety of idolatry and all regulations regarding relations with idolaters (“akum”) imply in Russia (a country where the Orthodox religion predominates), first of all, the orthodox Christians (page. 389). - The instruction on seeing a “house of idolatry” (i.e., place of worship) is to pronounce this curse upon it: “G-d will uproot the house of the proud,” and at the sight of a destroyed temple one is to exclaim: “The G-d of retribution has appeared!” Moreover, this opinion on the instruction is also advanced: “some maintain that this pertains to the houses of the non-Jews, who live in the world, calm and wealthy” (pp. 389-390). - Non-Jews are equated with excrement. (pp. 47 and 48). - It is prohibited to train non-Jews in a craft. (p. 390). - “The Jewess ought not to help non-Jews with childbirth.” (p. 390). - “If a man took a loan from a non-Jew who then died, the man has the right to refuse to pay back the loan to the deceased's son, who does not know accurately whether or not this Jew was in debt to his father.” (p. 405). - In money calculations “If a non-Jew made a mistake against himself, it is permitted to use his error.” (p. 406). - “It is forbidden to betray Jew into the hands of a non-Jew, whether the matter has to do with the Jew's life or his property; and it does not matter whether this is done by some action or by words; and it is forbidden to report him or to point out the places where he has hidden his property.” (p. 408) - we imperatively request that it be noted that this concerns the behavior prescribed for Jews in the context of investigations and trials. Of course, among the thirteen major principles of Judaism is the requirement that they must await a Jewish world ruler who will appoint Jews to rule above other peoples of the world: “Unconditionally do I believe in the arrival of the mashiakh [messiah], and, although his coming may be delayed, nevertheless each day I will await him.” (p. 485). – In the teachings of the Orthodox Church this expected ruler of the world is identified with the antichrist, about whom Jesus Christ warned (John 5:43), as did the Apostle Paul (2 Thess. 2), and the holy fathers of the Church. This is an important and integral part of Orthodox teachings. In the introduction to this book the head of KEROOR writes that “the Talmud is the unsurpassed monument of Jewish genius,” and this distillation of its morality, “the Kitsur Sulkhan Arukh is the anthology of the Jewish civilization of our time. . . . This book is completely necessary for you. You can act in the manner that it prescribes and be confident that you have carried out the will of the Ex-lted.” And the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Adolf Shayevich, notes in the preface: “Interest in this book exceeded our most daring expectations. A huge quantity of grateful responses from the most different people has continued all this time to come in to our address. An even larger quantity of letters contain imperative requests for help in acquiring this publication.” We would suppose that already on the basis of this one official Jewish publication the law-enforcement agencies should, in accordance with article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, suppress the propagation of a religion that kindles hatred among the Jews for the rest of the “population of Russia.” All the more, if we take a glance at “the ideally complete volume of the unsurpassed monument of Judaic morals” – the Shulkhan Arukh, that is studied in the yeshivas. We will use translations of it from the Amsterdam Judaic publication, made by a judicial expert, the Hebrew scholar Dr. K. Ecker, for the court trial in Germany in 1883 (Dr. K Ecker. Der “Judenspiegel” im Lichte der Wahrheit, eine wissentschaftliche Untersuchung. Paderborn. 1884; Russian translation: Dr. K. Ekker. Yevreyskoe zertsalo v svete istiny. Nauchnoe issledovanie. Moskva, 1906). This legal case was brought to court by Jews who were upset because one of their tribesmen, Justus Brieman, converted to Christianity and published the anti-human laws of the Shulkhan Arukh and of the Talmud. The law court ruled that the man who published the work was in the right, after finding that his translation corresponded to the original text. Dr. Ekker only corrected small inaccuracies. We will cite below characteristic extracts from the text as corrected by him, together with the references to specific Jewish sources (drawing confidence from both the qualifications of the German Hebrew scholar and the authority of the German law court). - “His [the non-Jew's] seed is considered like the seed of cattle” (Tosefta – an addition to the Talmud. Ketubot, 3 b). “For [dead] servants and maids . . . words of comfort should not be said to their relatives, but it is necessary to say to him [the Jewish master]: ‘may God compensate you for your loss’, just as one says to a man whose bull or donkey has died.” (Iore de'a 377-1). - “It is forbidden to save them [non-Jews, akums] when they are close to death. For example, when you see that one of them has fallen into the sea, do not rescue him, even if he wants to pay. . . . It is permitted to test medicine on an akum to see whether or not it is effective.” (Iore de'a 158-1). - “The money of akums is essentially like goods with no owner, and the one who arrives first may take possession of them.” “With respect to an akum there is no fraud.” (Khoshen ha-mishpat 156-5, Khaga; 227-26; 348-2, Khaga). - “When a Jew has robbed an akum and they force him [the Jew] to take an oath., then he must in his heart proclaim his oath invalid, because he has been forced to take it.” (Iore de'a 329-1, Khaga). Note: this again concerns the behavior of Jews during investigations and trials! - “When it has been established about someone that he has betrayed a Jew or his money three times to an akum, then it is necessary to seek out ways and means to squeeze him out of the world.” “As to expenditures needed for squeezing a traitor from the world, all the inhabitants of a locality are obliged to contribute.” (Khoshen ha-mishpat 388-15 and -16). - “It is permitted to kill a traitor in any place, even in our time. It is permissible to kill him early, before he manages to make a denunciation [powerful enough to cause ‘bodily or monetary loss, no matter how small’] . . . and everyone who is the first to kill acquires merit.” (Khoshen ha-mishpat 388-10). - “The Jew-free-thinker, i.e., he who carries out the divine service of akums . . . to kill all such people is a good deed. When there is authority to kill them publicly by the sword, then let this be carried out; but if there is not, then they must be entangled in every way possible in order to cause to them death. For example, when you see that one of them has fallen into a well and in the well there is a ladder, then hurry to take out it, saying: ‘I have a major concern; I need to get my son down from the roof, and I will bring it right back to you,’ or something like that.” (Khoshen ha-mishpat 425-5). Provocateurs and Haters of Humanity It should be noted that even the last prescriptions for killing – are to this day is not only theory, but also practice. Thus, the former chairman of Kharkov Jewish community E. Khodos published proofs ("An Axe above Orthodoxy, or who killed my father.” Kharkov, 1999) showing that members of the Jewish Chabad movement carried out the 1990 murder of priest-Jew Father Aleksandr Men’ (who “carried out the divine service of the Akums” and dreamed about the creation of a “Jewish Orthodox Church,” something that is considered a criminal offense according to the laws of the state of Israel). But the authorities in the Russian Federation have not been interested in such evidence. Criminals are supposed to be sought only among “Russian anti-Semites”. We would like to emphasize that the majority of anti-Jewish actions throughout the world are constantly arranged by Jews themselves with the purpose of provoking punitive measures against patriots. The best-known case in Russia is that of Arkady Norinsky, who in 1988 sent out anti-Semitic leaflets in the name of the organization “Pamyat’” in order to impel authorities to suppress it. In this he had the help of his fellow tribesman, the editor in chief of the journal Znamya, G. Baklanov, who published the leaflet in a print run of several millions. It was only after this that the provocation was uncovered. (“Znamya” No. 10, 1988; “Pravda”, 19 November1988; “Komsomol'skaya Pravda”, 24 November1988; “Ogonyok” No. 9, 1989). From recent cases it is possible to mention a strange series of reports of vandalism that took place in 1998 and 1999. On the night of 13 May 1998, an explosion occurred at a synagogue in the Mar'inaya grove in Moscow damaging a wall. During the same day “a burning canister of gasoline” was placed not far from the synagogue in Otradny. In Irkutsk “a Jewish cemetery was desecrated” – of course the uproar in the international media was loud and all of them put the blame, without any evidence, on some sort of Russian Nazis (“Nezavisimaya Gazeta,” 15 May 1998). But when shortly after that, in 1999, a synagogue in Birobidzhan was destroyed, it was established in court that the Jews themselves hired a man to do this. (“Radonezh”, 1999, No. 15-16), but the democratic mass media were silent about this. On the basis of the rules and practices of Jewish behavior that have been cited above, it is not difficult to understand why a constant companion of Jews among all peoples has been notorious “anti-Semitism”, i.e., the non-acceptance of Judaic morality. For this very reason Jews did not have an equality of rights in the Christian states and attained it only as a result of anti-monarchist bourgeois revolutions. Thus in the Russian Empire, the Jews, after unsuccessful attempts by the Tsarist government to give them the status “of everybody else,” lost their equality in the 19th Century, not because they were Jewish by blood – since the empire was multinational; nor because they were not Christian – since the Muslims and Buddhists and others were not Christians either; but because the Jewish religion is anti-Christian and misanthropic to the point of ritual murder. Many examples of this ritual extremism were documented in courts. (For example, see the study of the well-known scholar V. I. Dal’, Rozyskanie o ubinenii yevreyami khristianskikh mladentsev i upotreblenii krovi ikh [“Criminal investigation into the murder by Jews of Christian infants and the use of their blood.”] St. Petersburg, 1884). To all this it is possible also to add the words of the Prayer of Shefokh, in which the Jews on the eve of their Passover issue a call their “god” “to exterminate from the universe” all other peoples. Jewish Agressiveness as a Form of Satanism The spiritual reason for this hatred of humanity is explained in the Gospels in the words of Christ regarding the Jewish spiritual leaders who rejected the Son of the God: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning . . .” (John 8:19-44). This elucidation of Judaic aggressiveness as a form of Satanism is generally accepted in Orthodoxy. Well-known philosopher-intellectuals who cannot be suspected of anti-Semitism expressed it. For example, A.F. Losev (in “Istochnik” Moscow, 1996, No. 4. pp. 117-122), Father Pavel Florensky (in the book “Sakharna”, by V. V. Rozanov. Moscow. Izdatel'stvo “Respublika”, 1998, p. 360), and Father Sergiy Bulgakov: “the Jews who were rejecting Christ became the “laboratory for all sorts of spiritual diseases, poisoning the world and particularly Christian humanity.” (“Vestnik RKhD”, Paris, 1973 No. 108-110. p. 72). Even the Judeo-Christian Father Aleksandr Men’, who was struggling against “anti-Semitism”, asserted that the Jew who rejects Christianity, “betrays himself and easily falls under the power of dark forces.” (the journal “Yevrei v SSSR”, 1975, No. 11). This, unfortunately is what happened with the larger part of the Jewish people (in contrast to its smaller part, which accepted Christianity). But they do not want to recognize this and believe that that statement of the truth by Christ and after him by Orthodox Christians is “insulting” to the Jews. Jewish plaintiffs frequently direct their charge of “anti-Semitism” against this essential part of Orthodox doctrine itself, demanding that it actually be banned (as in the case with the textbook “Osnov pravoslavnoy kul'tury” [“Bases of Orthodox Culture”]). But we cannot agree with banning the Orthodox doctrine about the idea of history as the struggle of the forces of good (on the side of the Church) against the forces of evil (the side opposed to religion, that prepares for the reign of the antichrist). Following the precepts of the Orthodox Fathers of the Church, we also cannot follow the false understanding that is spreading according to which tolerance is humbleness before the sin, evil, heresies, and in this case Satanism. The Christian must precisely from the respect for the image of God placed in each person, and for the sake of saving his soul, frankly indicate to Jews their dangerous deviation from the truth into Satanism. It is in this that, from a Christian point of view, the manifestation of authentic love for people consists. “Tolerant” indulgence of heresies and Satanism only contributes to their spiritual loss – and under their strong pressure – to that of their many victims. One should immediately answer also the possible objection that the Russian patriots, who level charges at the Jews, do not always distinguish between religious and non-religious Jews, particularly since the majority of Jews do not consider themselves believers in Judaism and do not study the “Shulkhan Arukh.” But many generations of the self-contained life of Jews among other peoples (in this context there developed the idea of the Jewish kahal as a “state within a state” - see the books by Jewish authors: “Antisemitizm v drevnem mire” [“Antisemitism in the ancient world”] by S. Lur'e and the “Kniga Kagala” [“The Book of the Kahal”] by Yakov Brafman) led to the situation where the morality of the “Shulkhan Arukh” became a part of Jewish national self-consciousness even in its secular form. This conclusion was drawn by the well-known Jewish writer and sociologist Hannah Arendt: “Precisely in the process of secularization was borne completely real Jewish chauvinism. . . . The idea of the chosenness of the Jews became . . . the idea that Jews supposedly were the salt of the earth. From now on, the old religious concept of chosenness was no longer the essence of Judaism; it became instead the essence of Jewishness.” (“Antisemitism”//”Sintaksis"Paris, No. 26, 1989) [English readers see Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism, New York: Schocken, 2004. p. 99.] This “real Jewish chauvinism” and the unceremonious spirit of the “Shulkhan Arukh” were clearly visible in the course of the destruction the USSR and the post-communistic reforms in our country and were expressed in the illegal appropriation of state property as “goods with no owner,” and also in the composition of the new ruling stratum. “The government is full of Jews,” acknowledged the Rabbi Adolf Shayevich ("NH- Figury i litsa”, 1998, No. 16.). Thus, their corresponding influence on the life of the country proved to be completely disproportionate to their numbers (0,16 % according to the data of last census) to the detriment of the interests of all the other peoples of the country and especially the Russian people who formed the country. The Jewish Revolution The well-known Jewish publicist L. Radzikhovsky calls this a ‘democratic-capitalist revolution’ and says: “The Jewish and Jewish-oriented intelligentsia, which constitutes in Russia one of the chief carriers of western-liberal ideology, became the ideologist of this revolution.’ Therefore ‘Jews have a larger specific weight in Russian politics and business than in the politics and business of any other Christian country.” This he calls the “good luck of the Jews” which was also the title of his article (“Yevreyskoe schast'e” in “Novoe Russkoe Slovo,” 17 January 1996.)” The Jewish oligarchs themselves frankly described on Israeli television (2nd program, 3 October 1996) the sources of their “good luck” in the revolution that they perfected (the italics are ours): “The degree of corruption in Russia completely corresponds to the degree of transformations in Russia. I do not think that in the hands of the officials of Israel . . . there is the possibility to redistribute wealth worth tens, hundreds of millions and billions . . . this was – no one's, this was – the state's, this was everyone's! So here, an official had the capability to determine by drawing up a list: this belongs to you, or to someone else. . . . A good fight, which led to the result that we have today.” (Boris Berezovsky). “Incomes like this and profits like this, which could be earned in Russia, could not be earned anywhere else. . . . A big share of capital there, 50 percent, belongs to Jewish business.” (Vitaly Malkin, now a member of the presidium of Russian Jewish Congress). Vladimir Gusinsky, the first chairman of Russian Jewish Congress, in that broadcast said that one of the reasons for Jewish luck is their “ferocity.” “It is not so much the rules; it is more the rule of force, it is more the rule of aggression.” “For the first time in thousands years, since the moment the Jews settled in Russia, we have obtained real authority in this country,” states another Jewish writer, E. Topol’, in an “Open letter to Berezovsky, Gusinsky, Smolensky, Khodorkovsky and the rest of the oligarchs” (“Otkrytoe pis'mo Berezovskomu, Gusinskomu, Smolenskomu, Khodorkovskomu i ostal'nym oligarkham,” in “Argumenty i Fakty”, 1998, No 38). In this connection, Topol’ and other sensitive Jews (for example, Yu. Nudel'man in "Sovyetskaya Rossiya", 20 June 2002) emphasize that the destructive and self-interested policy of Jewish oligarchs, which degrades the Russian people, provokes the hostility of the Russian people to the Jews. This obvious fact was noted even by the ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Russian Federation, André Mernier, in his final report on his work, sent out to all foreign embassies and to his colleagues in the diplomatic corps in September 2004, before his departure from Moscow. We request that the Procurator General's office regard this opinion of Topol’ and Nudel'man as an acknowledgement that it is the accusing (Jewish) side that is responsible for the contemporary aggravation of the Russo-Jewish conflict. This is especially true, given the fact that in order to keep their authority and their illegally seized “un-owned” state property, this ruling stratum conducts a policy designed to bring about the decay of the people's morals and the removal of spiritual values, attempting to turn the people into an animal mass without faith and tradition – the more easily to govern them and the more easily to suppress their resistance. In particular, it was precisely the Jews who put up furious resistance to teaching “Osnov pravoslavnoy kyl'tury” [“The Bases of Orthodox Culture”] in the schools, and it is precisely on the initiative of Jews that we, the Russian people who formed the country, are forbidden to indicate our nationality in our passports. The Chef Rabbi of the Russian Federation, Adolf Shayevich, in an interview with the “Los Angeles Times” (1 October 1997) confirmed that precisely the Jews insisted on the eliminating the entry for “nationality” [in passports], and he explained the reason for this by citing the fact that “Jews have taken high posts in the administration.” That is, even they themselves realize what kind of idea non-Jews have formed about their nationality, and therefore they attempt to hide their nationality. This also says a lot. Among the other numerous examples of the removal of spiritual values we cannot but draw your attention, Mr. Procurator General, to the policy of the Minister of Culture Mikhail Shvydkoy (who now leads a government agency for the matters of culture) and its television program “Kul'turnaya revolyutsiya” [“Cultural Revolution”], in which Russian patriotism and Orthodox traditions regularly are degraded. It propagandizes obscenity and the idea that sex is the engine of culture” (7 March 2002). All protests of the Russian community against the scandalous and, in essence, provocative activity of this “chief man of culture in the country” have proven futile. Moreover Shvydkoy and his associates have the central channels of Russian television at their disposal for their attacks, while the Orthodox patriot defendants have the tiny print runs [of publications], for which they are investigated and brought to trial. This inequality of opportunity can also lead them involuntarily to the excessive emotionalism, especially when they the rebuff the blasphemous and insolent anti-Russian actions of persons of Jewish origin. But this emotionalism of defendants driven into a corner should not be mixed up with aggressive, offensive emotionalism. The Orthodox person is not allowed to be aggressive, but he is called on to protect its people and their sacred things. The example of this was given by Christ Himself, who by the whip was banished from the temple by the merchants who had profaned it. What is permissible to whom? In comparison with the statements of the accused Russian patriots, much more aggressive statements by Jews regarding non-Jews are printed in Jewish newspapers published in the Russian Federation. For example, in the organ of the Russian Jewish Congress, ‘Yevreyskie novosti’ (2002, No. 16, page 9) the Knesset deputy A. Lieberman called for the forcible expulsion of the Palestinians from Israel. Accordingly the Palestinians – in violation of UN Security Council resolutions! – are not only thrown out of their homeland (4 million refugees), but their activists are murdered along with their families. Thus does the Shulkhan Arukh show up in the state policy of Israel. And the Jews of the Russian Federation support it. The Russian Jewish Congress states that one of its aims is “to conduct actions of solidarity with the people of Israel, carrying out political lobbying for the interests of Israel” (Yevreyskie novosti, 2002 No. 15, p. 5). The same goal is also pursued by the state Institute for the Study of Israel and the Near East, the leader of which, Yevgeny Satanovsky, simultaneously headed the Russian Jewish Congress. Jewish communities all over the world carry out similar “political lobbying” for the interests of international Jewry to the detriment of the interests of the countries in which they live, and particularly in the USA. That state has become an instrument for the attainment of the global aims of Jewry. And they try to mask the racism of their Shulkhan Arukh by slapping the charge of anti-Semitism (i.e., allegedly racial hatred) on all those who do not agree with their morality, their activities, their wars. But such a reversal of concepts is a crude forgery, as should be clear to any impartial judge. One can say that the whole democratic world today has fallen under the financial and political control of international Jewry, of which eminent bankers (Jacques Attali and others) are openly proud. And we do not see it as desirable that our Russia, against whose revival a permanent preventive war without rules is being conducted, should wind up among such unfree countries. Therefore we, both in order to protect our fatherland and for personal self-defense, are forced to turn to you, Mr. Procurator General, with the imperative request that within the shortest period you verify the scandalous facts presented above and, if they are confirmed, on the basis of the corresponding articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation's Law “on opposing extremist activity” (2002) and article 13 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation (“the creation and activity of public associations, the aim of which is directed towards kindling social, racial, national, and religious discord are prohibited”) to officially institute proceedings for the prohibition in our country of all religious and national Jewish associations as extremist. We also request that persons responsible for assigning to these associations state and municipal property, privileges, and state financing, be called to account regardless of the posts they occupy. Representatives of Russian society demand from the Procurator General of the Russian Federation the suppression of illegal propagation of Jewish national and religious extremism. Dear Mr. Procurator General: On 18 December 2003 the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir V. Putin, brought up the following statistics in the course of a televised address: in 1999 there were four convictions under article 282 of the Russian Federation Criminal Code on inciting inter-ethnic hatred. In 2000 there were 10. And in 2003 “more than 60 criminal investigations were made into cases of inciting inter-ethnic discord. Of these, 20 cases went to court and guilty verdicts were handed down in 17-20 cases.” (President’s live television dialogue with the Russian people, 18 December 2003, excerpts available at: http://president.kremlin.ru/eng/speeches/2003/12/18/1200_57480.shtml). Who is shouting “stop, thief!”? The overwhelming majority of these cases are initiated by Jewish activists or organizations, who charge their defendants with the “anti-Semitism.” But the overwhelming majority of those accused and convicted are Russian patriots. Now they have been joined by the well-known independent politician and pamphleteer, the former head of Goskompechat’ (the State Publishing Commission) B. S. Mironov. We recognize that the statements of Russian patriots regarding Jews frequently have a sharply negative and excessively emotional character, unacceptable in public discussion, and constitute what the law regards as extremism. None of the above-mentioned trials, however, ever examined the reason for this sharpness, the original source of this extremism in the given inter-ethnic conflict. Indeed the chief problem that must be elucidated in investigations and trials is: do the sharply negative assessments of the Jews by Russian patriots correspond in essence to the truth about the Jews (against whom they are directed) or do they not? If they do not correspond to the truth about the Jews, then the discussion can deal with the defamation of Jews and with the incitement of religious and inter-ethnic discord. But if they do correspond to the truth, then such assessments, apart from and independent of their emotionalism, cannot be qualified as defamatory, as incitement to discord, and the like. (For example, to say a decent person is a criminal is defamatory to him; but to name someone who has committed a crime a criminal - this is a truthful statement of facts.) Furthermore, since there are two sides in this inter-ethnic conflict (the accuser and the accused), it follows that one must clear up: which of the sides actually started this conflict in the first place and was responsible for it, and whether the actions of the accused might not be acts of self-defense in response to acts of aggression by the accusing side? We ask you to verify, Mr. Procurator General, that on these matters there is a large quantity of universally recognized facts and sources from around the world, on the basis of which it is possible to draw the indisputable conclusion that: the Russian patriots’ negative assessments of typical Jewish qualities and actions with respect to non-Jews correspond to truth; it being known that these actions are not chance occurrences, but are prescribed in Judaism and have been practiced for two millenia. Thus, the incriminating statements and publications made by patriots against the Jews constitute self-defense, which may not always be correct in terms of style, but remains nevertheless justified in essence. The Morality of Jewish Fascism To corroborate this, we draw your attention to the book Kitsur Shulkhan Arukh officially published in Moscow in 2001 by the Congress of Jewish Religious Organizations and Associations in Russia (KEROOR). This is a condensed version of the Jewish law code, the Sulkhan Arukh, compiled several centuries ago on the basis of the Talmud and required in practice to this day. In the introduction to the book the head of KEROOR, Rabbi Zinoviy Kogan makes the frank acknowledgement (the italics are ours) that: “The editorial council of KEROOR considered it necessary in this translation to omit some instructions of the halakha [Jewish law] . . . whose inclusion in the publication in the Russian language would be perceived by the population of Russia, which does not adhere to Judaism, as an unprovoked insult. The reader who wishes to read the Kitsur Shulkhan Arukh in the ideally complete volume, is invited to come to a yeshiva in order to study this and many other holy books in the original.” That is, one of the leaders of Russian Jewry himself recognized that some regulations of the Judaic code of behavior were insulting to the non-Jewish population of Russia, but considers it possible to invite his fellow tribesmen to yeshivas – the Jewish schools, which are financed from the state and local budgets – to study these insults. Yet, even in this expurgated publication we find the following provisions: - In the “Laws about the idolatry” it is stated that “it is forbidden to use the figure of two crossed sticks, which they worship.” That is to say, Christianity is considered a variety of idolatry and all regulations regarding relations with idolaters (“akum”) imply in Russia (a country where the Orthodox religion predominates), first of all, the orthodox Christians (page. 389). - The instruction on seeing a “house of idolatry” (i.e., place of worship) is to pronounce this curse upon it: “G-d will uproot the house of the proud,” and at the sight of a destroyed temple one is to exclaim: “The G-d of retribution has appeared!” Moreover, this opinion on the instruction is also advanced: “some maintain that this pertains to the houses of the non-Jews, who live in the world, calm and wealthy” (pp. 389-390). - Non-Jews are equated with excrement. (pp. 47 and 48). - It is prohibited to train non-Jews in a craft. (p. 390). - “The Jewess ought not to help non-Jews with childbirth.” (p. 390). - “If a man took a loan from a non-Jew who then died, the man has the right to refuse to pay back the loan to the deceased’s son, who does not know accurately whether or not this Jew was in debt to his father.” (p. 405). - In money calculations “If a non-Jew made a mistake against himself, it is permitted to use his error.” (p. 406). - “It is forbidden to betray Jew into the hands of a non-Jew, whether the matter has to do with the Jew’s life or his property; and it does not matter whether this is done by some action or by words; and it is forbidden to report him or to point out the places where he has hidden his property.” (p. 408) - we imperatively request that it be noted that this concerns the behavior prescribed for Jews in the context of investigations and trials. Of course, among the thirteen major principles of Judaism is the requirement that they must await a Jewish world ruler who will appoint Jews to rule above other peoples of the world: “Unconditionally do I believe in the arrival of the mashiakh [messiah], and, although his coming may be delayed, nevertheless each day I will await him.” (p. 485). – In the teachings of the Orthodox Church this expected ruler of the world is identified with the antichrist, about whom Jesus Christ warned (John 5:43), as did the Apostle Paul (2 Thess. 2), and the holy fathers of the Church. This is an important and integral part of Orthodox teachings. In the introduction to this book the head of KEROOR writes that “the Talmud is the unsurpassed monument of Jewish genius,” and this distillation of its morality, “the Kitsur Sulkhan Arukh is the anthology of the Jewish civilization of our time. . . . This book is completely necessary for you. You can act in the manner that it prescribes and be confident that you have carried out the will of the Ex-lted.” And the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Adolf Shayevich, notes in the preface: “Interest in this book exceeded our most daring expectations. A huge quantity of grateful responses from the most different people has continued all this time to come in to our address. An even larger quantity of letters contain imperative requests for help in acquiring this publication.” We would suppose that already on the basis of this one official Jewish publication the law-enforcement agencies should, in accordance with article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, suppress the propagation of a religion that kindles hatred among the Jews for the rest of the “population of Russia.” All the more, if we take a glance at “the ideally complete volume of the unsurpassed monument of Judaic morals” – the Shulkhan Arukh, that is studied in the yeshivas. We will use translations of it from the Amsterdam Judaic publication, made by a judicial expert, the Hebrew scholar Dr. K. Ecker, for the court trial in Germany in 1883 (Dr. K Ecker. Der “Judenspiegel” im Lichte der Wahrheit, eine wissentschaftliche Untersuchung. Paderborn. 1884; Russian translation: Dr. K. Ekker. Yevreyskoe zertsalo v svete istiny. Nauchnoe issledovanie. Moskva, 1906). This legal case was brought to court by Jews who were upset because one of their tribesmen, Justus Brieman, converted to Christianity and published the anti-human laws of the Shulkhan Arukh and of the Talmud. The law court ruled that the man who published the work was in the right, after finding that his translation corresponded to the original text. Dr. Ekker only corrected small inaccuracies. We will cite below characteristic extracts from the text as corrected by him, together with the references to specific Jewish sources (drawing confidence from both the qualifications of the German Hebrew scholar and the authority of the German law court). - “His [the non-Jew’s] seed is considered like the seed of cattle” (Tosefta – an addition to the Talmud. Ketubot, 3 b). “For [dead] servants and maids . . . words of comfort should not be said to their relatives, but it is necessary to say to him [the Jewish master]: ‘may God compensate you for your loss’, just as one says to a man whose bull or donkey has died.” (Iore de’a 377-1). - “It is forbidden to save them [non-Jews, akums] when they are close to death. For example, when you see that one of them has fallen into the sea, do not rescue him, even if he wants to pay. . . . It is permitted to test medicine on an akum to see whether or not it is effective.” (Iore de’a 158-1). - “The money of akums is essentially like goods with no owner, and the one who arrives first may take possession of them.” “With respect to an akum there is no fraud.” (Khoshen ha-mishpat 156-5, Khaga; 227-26; 348-2, Khaga). - “When a Jew has robbed an akum and they force him [the Jew] to take an oath., then he must in his heart proclaim his oath invalid, because he has been forced to take it.” (Iore de’a 329-1, Khaga). Note: this again concerns the behavior of Jews during investigations and trials! - “When it has been established about someone that he has betrayed a Jew or his money three times to an akum, then it is necessary to seek out ways and means to squeeze him out of the world.” “As to expenditures needed for squeezing a traitor from the world, all the inhabitants of a locality are obliged to contribute.” (Khoshen ha-mishpat 388-15 and -16). - “It is permitted to kill a traitor in any place, even in our time. It is permissible to kill him early, before he manages to make a denunciation [powe rful enough to cause ‘bodily or monetary loss, no matter how small’] . . . and everyone who is the first to kill acquires merit.” (Khoshen ha-mishpat 388-10). - “The Jew-free-thinker, i.e., he who carries out the divine service of akums . . . to kill all such people is a good deed. When there is authority to kill them publicly by the sword, then let this be carried out; but if there is not, then they must be entangled in every way possible in order to cause to them death. For example, when you see that one of them has fallen into a well and in the well there is a ladder, then hurry to take out it, saying: ‘I have a major concern; I need to get my son down from the roof, and I will bring it right back to you,’ or something like that.” (Khoshen ha-mishpat 425-5). Provocateurs and Haters of Humanity It should be noted that even the last prescriptions for killing – are to this day is not only theory, but also practice. Thus, the former chairman of Kharkov Jewish community E. Khodos published proofs ("An Axe above Orthodoxy, or who killed my father.” Kharkov, 1999) showing that members of the Jewish Chabad movement carried out the 1990 murder of priest-Jew Father Aleksandr Men’ (who “carried out the divine service of the Akums” and dreamed about the creation of a “Jewish Orthodox Church,” something that is considered a criminal offense according to the laws of the state of Israel). But the authorities in the Russian Federation have not been interested in such evidence. Criminals are supposed to be sought only among “Russian anti-Semites”. We would like to emphasize that the majority of anti-Jewish actions throughout the world are constantly arranged by Jews themselves with the purpose of provoking punitive measures against patriots. The best-known case in Russia is that of Arkady Norinsky, who in 1988 sent out anti-Semitic leaflets in the name of the organization “Pamyat’” in order to impel authorities to suppress it. In this he had the help of his fellow tribesman, the editor in chief of the journal Znamya, G. Baklanov, who published the leaflet in a print run of several millions. It was only after this that the provocation was uncovered. (“Znamya” No. 10, 1988; “Pravda”, 19 November1988; “Komsomol’skaya Pravda”, 24 November1988; “Ogonyok” No. 9, 1989). From recent cases it is possible to mention a strange series of reports of vandalism that took place in 1998 and 1999. On the night of 13 May 1998, an explosion occurred at a synagogue in the Mar’inaya grove in Moscow damaging a wall. During the same day “a burning canister of gasoline” was placed not far from the synagogue in Otradny. In Irkutsk “a Jewish cemetery was desecrated” – of course the uproar in the international media was loud and all of them put the blame, without any evidence, on some sort of Russian Nazis (“Nezavisimaya Gazeta,” 15 May 1998). But when shortly after that, in 1999, a synagogue in Birobidzhan was destroyed, it was established in court that the Jews themselves hired a man to do this. (“Radonezh”, 1999, No. 15-16), but the democratic mass media were silent about this. On the basis of the rules and practices of Jewish behavior that have been cited above, it is not difficult to understand why a constant companion of Jews among all peoples has been notorious “anti-Semitism”, i.e., the non-acceptance of Judaic morality. For this very reason Jews did not have an equality of rights in the Christian states and attained it only as a result of anti-monarchist bourgeois revolutions. Thus in the Russian Empire, the Jews, after unsuccessful attempts by the Tsarist government to give them the status “of everybody else,” lost their equality in the 19th Century, not because they were Jewish by blood – since the empire was multinational; nor because they were not Christian – since the Muslims and Buddhists and others were not Christians either; but because the Jewish religion is anti-Christian and misanthropic to the point of ritual murder. Many examples of this ritual extremism were documented in courts. (For example, see the study of the well-known scholar V. I. Dal’, Rozyskanie o ubinenii yevreyami khristianskikh mladentsev i upotreblenii krovi ikh [“Criminal investigation into the murder by Jews of Christian infants and the use of their blood.”] St. Petersburg, 1884). To all this it is possible also to add the words of the Prayer of Shefokh, in which the Jews on the eve of their Passover issue a call their “god” “to exterminate from the universe” all other peoples. Jewish Agressiveness as a Form of Satanism The spiritual reason for this hatred of humanity is explained in the Gospels in the words of Christ regarding the Jewish spiritual leaders who rejected the Son of the God: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning . . .” (John 8:19-44). This elucidation of Judaic aggressiveness as a form of Satanism is generally accepted in Orthodoxy. Well-known philosopher-intellectuals who cannot be suspected of anti-Semitism expressed it. For example, A.F. Losev (in “Istochnik” Moscow, 1996, No. 4. pp. 117-122), Father Pavel Florensky (in the book “Sakharna”, by V. V. Rozanov. Moscow. Izdatel’stvo “Respublika”, 1998, p. 360), and Father Sergiy Bulgakov: “the Jews who were rejecting Christ became the “laboratory for all sorts of spiritual diseases, poisoning the world and particularly Christian humanity.” (“Vestnik RKhD”, Paris, 1973 No. 108-110. p. 72). Even the Judeo-Christian Father Aleksandr Men’, who was struggling against “anti-Semitism”, asserted that the Jew who rejects Christianity, “betrays himself and easily falls under the power of dark forces.” (the journal “Yevrei v SSSR”, 1975, No. 11). This, unfortunately is what happened with the larger part of the Jewish people (in contrast to its smaller part, which accepted Christianity). But they do not want to recognize this and believe that that statement of the truth by Christ and after him by Orthodox Christians is “insulting” to the Jews. Jewish plaintiffs frequently direct their charge of “anti-Semitism” against this essential part of Orthodox doctrine itself, demanding that it actually be banned (as in the case with the textbook “Osnov pravoslavnoy kul’tury” [“Bases of Orthodox Culture”]). But we cannot agree with banning the Orthodox doctrine about the idea of history as the struggle of the forces of good (on the side of the Church) against the forces of evil (the side opposed to religion, that prepares for the reign of the antichrist). Following the precepts of the Orthodox Fathers of the Church, we also cannot follow the false understanding that is spreading according to which tolerance is humbleness before the sin, evil, heresies, and in this case Satanism. The Christian must precisely from the respect for the image of God placed in each person, and for the sake of saving his soul, frankly indicate to Jews their dangerous deviation from the truth into Satanism. It is in this that, from a Christian point of view, the manifestation of authentic love for people consists. “Tolerant” indulgence of heresies and Satanism only contributes to their spiritual loss – and under their strong pressure – to that of their many victims. One should immediately answer also the possible objection that the Russian patriots, who level charges at the Jews, do not always distinguish between religious and non-religious Jews, particularly since the majority of Jews do not consider themselves believers in Judaism and do not study the “Shulkhan Arukh.” But many generations of the self-contained life of Jews among other peoples (in this context there developed the idea of the Jewish kahal as a “state within a state” - see the books by Jewish authors: “Antisemitizm v drevnem mire” [“Antisemitism in the ancient world”] by S. Lur’e and the “Kniga Kagala” [“The Book of the Kahal”] by Yakov Brafman) led to the situation where the morality of the “Shulkhan Arukh” became a part of Jewish national self-consciousness even in its secular form. This conclusion was drawn by the well-known Jewish writer and sociologist Hannah Arendt: “Precisely in the process of secularization was borne completely real Jewish chauvinism. . . . The idea of the chosenness of the Jews became . . . the idea that Jews supposedly were the salt of the earth. From now on, the old religious concept of chosenness was no longer the essence of Judaism; it became instead the essence of Jewishness.” (“Antisemitism”//”Sintaksis”Paris, No. 26, 1989) [English readers see Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism, New York: Schocken, 2004. p. 99.] This “real Jewish chauvinism” and the unceremonious spirit of the “Shulkhan Arukh” were clearly visible in the course of the destruction the USSR and the post-communistic reforms in our country and were expressed in the illegal appropriation of state property as “goods with no owner,” and also in the composition of the new ruling stratum. “The government is full of Jews,” acknowledged the Rabbi Adolf Shayevich ("NH- Figury i litsa”, 1998, No. 16.). Thus, their corresponding influence on the life of the country proved to be completely disproportionate to their numbers (0,16 % according to the data of last census) to the detriment of the interests of all the other peoples of the country and especially the Russian people who formed the country. The Jewish Revolution The well-known Jewish publicist L. Radzikhovsky calls this a ‘democratic-capitalist revolution’ and says: “The Jewish and Jewish-oriented intelligentsia, which constitutes in Russia one of the chief carriers of western-liberal ideology, became the ideologist of this revolution.’ Therefore ‘Jews have a larger specific weight in Russian politics and business than in the politics and business of any other Christian country.” This he calls the “good luck of the Jews” which was also the title of his article (“Yevreyskoe schast’e” in “Novoe Russkoe Slovo,” 17 January 1996.)” The Jewish oligarchs themselves frankly described on Israeli television (2nd program, 3 October 1996) the sources of their “good luck” in the revolution that they perfected (the italics are ours): “The degree of corruption in Russia completely corresponds to the degree of transformations in Russia. I do not think that in the hands of the officials of Israel . . . there is the possibility to redistribute wealth worth tens, hundreds of millions and billions . . . this was – no one’s, this was – the state’s, this was everyone’s! So here, an official had the capability to determine by drawing up a list: this belongs to you, or to someone else. . . . A good fight, which led to the result that we have today.” (Boris Berezovsky). “Incomes like this and profits like this, which could be earned in Russia, could not be earned anywhere else. . . . A big share of capital there, 50 percent, belongs to Jewish business.” (Vitaly Malkin, now a member of the presidium of Russian Jewish Congress). Vladimir Gusinsky, the first chairman of Russian Jewish Congress, in that broadcast said that one of the reasons for Jewish luck is their “ferocity.” “It is not so much the rules; it is more the rule of force, it is more the rule of aggression.” “For the first time in thousands years, since the moment the Jews settled in Russia, we have obtained real authority in this country,” states another Jewish writer, E. Topol’, in an “Open letter to Berezovsky, Gusinsky, Smolensky, Khodorkovsky and the rest of the oligarchs” (“Otkrytoe pis’mo Berezovskomu, Gusinskomu, Smolenskomu, Khodorkovskomu i ostal’nym oligarkham,” in “Argumenty i Fakty”, 1998, No 38). In this connection, Topol’ and other sensitive Jews (for example, Yu. Nudel'man in "Sovyetskaya Rossiya", 20 June 2002) emphasize that the destructive and self-interested policy of Jewish oligarchs, which degrades the Russian people, provokes the hostility of the Russian people to the Jews. This obvious fact was noted even by the ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Russian Federation, André Mernier, in his final report on his work, sent out to all foreign embassies and to his colleagues in the diplomatic corps in September 2004, before his departure from Moscow. We request that the Procurator General’s office regard this opinion of Topol’ and Nudel’man as an acknowledgement that it is the accusing (Jewish) side that is responsible for the contemporary aggravation of the Russo-Jewish conflict. This is especially true, given the fact that in order to keep their authority and their illegally seized “un-owned” state property, this ruling stratum conducts a policy designed to bring about the decay of the people’s morals and the removal of spiritual values, attempting to turn the people into an animal mass without faith and tradition – the more easily to govern them and the more easily to suppress their resistance. In particular, it was precisely the Jews who put up furious resistance to teaching “Osnov pravoslavnoy kyl’tury” [“The Bases of Orthodox Culture”] in the schools, and it is precisely on the initiative of Jews that we, the Russian people who formed the country, are forbidden to indicate our nationality in our passports. The Chef Rabbi of the Russian Federation, Adolf Shayevich, in an interview with the “Los Angeles Times” (1 October 1997) confirmed that precisely the Jews insisted on the eliminating the entry for “nationality” [in passports], and he explained the reason for this by citing the fact that “Jews have taken high posts in the administration.” That is, even they themselves realize what kind of idea non-Jews have formed about their nationality, and therefore they attempt to hide their nationality. This also says a lot. Among the other numerous examples of the removal of spiritual values we cannot but draw your attention, Mr. Procurator General, to the policy of the Minister of Culture Mikhail Shvydkoy (who now leads a government agency for the matters of culture) and its television program “Kul’turnaya revolyutsiya” [“Cultural Revolution”], in which Russian patriotism and Orthodox traditions regularly are degraded. It propagandizes obscenity and the idea that sex is the engine of culture” (7 March 2002). All protests of the Russian community against the scandalous and, in essence, provocative activity of this “chief man of culture in the country” have proven futile. Moreover Shvydkoy and his associates have the central channels of Russian television at their disposal for their attacks, while the Orthodox patriot defendants have the tiny print runs [of publications], for which they are investigated and brought to trial. This inequality of opportunity can also lead them involuntarily to the excessive emotionalism, especially when they the rebuff the blasphemous and insolent anti-Russian actions of persons of Jewish origin. But this emotionalism of defendants driven into a corner should not be mixed up with aggressive, offensive emotionalism. The Orthodox person is not allowed to be aggressive, but he is called on to protect its people and their sacred things. The example of this was given by Christ Himself, who by the whip was banished from the temple by the merchants who had profaned it. What is permissible to whom? In comparison with the statements of the accused Russian patriots, much more aggressive statements by Jews regarding non-Jews are printed in Jewish newspapers published in the Russian Federation. For example, in the organ of the Russian Jewish Congress, ‘Yevreyskie novosti’ (2002, No. 16, page 9) the Knesset deputy A. Lieberman called for the forcible expulsion of the Palestinians from Israel. Accordingly the Palestinians – in violation of UN Security Council resolutions! – are not only thrown out of their homeland (4 million refugees), but their activists are murdered along with their families. Thus does the Shulkhan Arukh show up in the state policy of Israel. And the Jews of the Russian Federation support it. The Russian Jewish Congress states that one of its aims is “to conduct actions of solidarity with the people of Israel, carrying out political lobbying for the interests of Israel” (Yevreyskie novosti, 2002 No. 15, p. 5). The same goal is also pursued by the state Institute for the Study of Israel and the Near East, the leader of which, Yevgeny Satanovsky, simultaneously headed the Russian Jewish Congress. Jewish communities all over the world carry out similar “political lobbying” for the interests of international Jewry to the detriment of the interests of the countries in which they live, and particularly in the USA. That state has become an instrument for the attainment of the global aims of Jewry. And they try to mask the racism of their Shulkhan Arukh by slapping the charge of anti-Semitism (i.e., allegedly racial hatred) on all those who do not agree with their morality, their activities, their wars. But such a reversal of concepts is a crude forgery, as should be clear to any impartial judge. One can say that the whole democratic world today has fallen under the financial and political control of international Jewry, of which eminent bankers (Jacques Attali and others) are openly proud. And we do not see it as desirable that our Russia, against whose revival a permanent preventive war without rules is being conducted, should wind up among such unfree countries. Therefore we, both in order to protect our fatherland and for personal self-defense, are forced to turn to you, Mr. Procurator General, with the imperative request that within the shortest period you verify the scandalous facts presented above and, if they are confirmed, on the basis of the corresponding articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation’s Law “on opposing extremist activity” (2002) and article 13 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation (“the creation and activity of public associations, the aim of which is directed towards kindling social, racial, national, and religious discord are prohibited”) to officially institute proceedings for the prohibition in our country of all religious and national Jewish associations as extremist. We also request that persons responsible for assigning to these associations state and municipal property, privileges, and state financing, be called to account regardless of the posts they occupy. | Russian State Television Denounces World Jewry Moscow, Russia — A February 3rd broadcast on Russian state-owned NTV by Communist legislator Albert Makashov has the Jewish hate-community calling for legal action and denouncing "rising anti-Semitism". Makashov, in a debate with Alexei Leonov, a Soviet cosmonaut, said outright that Jewish oligarchs had robbed Russia of its wealth, were exerting "total control" over the Russian economy, and needed to be driven out of the country. In response, the formal head of Russia's organized Jewish community called for Makashov to be arrested. The fact that the Jewish "leader" responded by demanding the arrest of someone for disagreeing with him politically did not strike world Jewry as "anti-democratic". While the judges of the debate show, hosted by Jew Vladimir Solovyev, voted in favor of Leonid's argument, 53% of the call-in voters to the show declared Makashov the winner, and many of the callers who came on air also made anti- Jewish comments, and called for the extermination of Russia's Jews. Internationally, Jewish groups used the show to call on countries like the US, Britain and Germany to give them more money, nominally for "saving Russia's Jews". Russian Jewish leaders urged that Jews in Russia think of emigrating to Jew- friendly contries like the states. Tankred Golenpolsky, a Jewish journalist in Russia, made the public statement, “This show is a signal to the Jews, including those who had never thought about leaving their native country. It's time to take our kids out of here." Jews, most of them from America, Britain and Germany, came to Russia in 1917 to launch the Bolshevik revolution. Jews like Trotsky, Zinoviev, and Lenin (1/4 Jewish) dominated Soviet Russia until the rise of Stalin, and continued to man its bureaucracy until the late days of the Soviet Union. When the US pawn Boris Yeltsin came to power, Jews were restored to prominence through the looting of Russia's main industries. Oligarch Poroshenko owns Channel 5, the television channel that during the "Orange Revolution" turned from a relatively objective news source into a fountain of opposition propaganda. Billionaire Jew Julia Timoshenko, 44, has been appointed Prime Minister, the nation's second most powerful position, despite an international arrest warrant. Timoshenko is under criminal indictment in Russia for fraud and bribing government officials. In 1996-97 Timoshenko sucked billions from the Ukrainian economy through the re-sale of gas under the protection of her robber-baron patron, former prime minister Pavel Lazarenko. (Pavel Lazarenko is serving a prison sentence in California after being convicted of extortion, money laundering, conspiracy, fraud and the transportation of stolen property. Lazarenko was also convicted of money laundering in Switzerland and is wanted for murder in Ukraine. His American criminal defense lawyer is well-known television legal commentator Daniel Horowitz. During his San Francisco trial, Horowitz introduced secret recordings of former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma that include anti-Semitic cursing and rants against Lazarenko. This was illustrated when AIPAC helped draft the official statement defending Israel's 1981 bombing of the Iraqi nuclear reactor, then issued it the same hour as Israel's embassy. No major Jewish organization ever publicly takes issue with positions and policies adopted by Israel. Thomas A. Dine, executive director of AIPAC, spoke warmly of President Reagan's peace plan when it was announced in September 1982, but as soon as Israel rejected the plan, Dine fell silent. Page 27 -- Even the President Turns to AIPAC Over the years the pro-Israel lobby has thoroughly penetrated this nation's governmental system, and the organization that has made the deepest impact is AIPAC, to whom even the president of the United States turns when he has a vexing political problem related to the Arab-Israeli dispute. Page 35 -- AIPAC Publishes 'Enemies List' AIPAC's outreach program is buttressed by a steady stream of publications. In addition to "Action Alerts" and the weekly Near East Report, it issues position papers and monographs designed to answer, or often discredit, critics, and advance Israel's objectives. The most controversial publication of all is an "enemies list" issued as a "first edition" in the spring of 1983. A handsomely printed 154-page paperback entitled The Campaign to Discredit Israel, it provides a "directory of the actors": 21 organizations and 39 individuals AIPAC identified as inimical to Israeli interests. Included are such distinguished public servants as former Undersecretary of State George W. Ball, retired ambassadors Talcott Seelye, Andrew Kilgore, John C. West and James Atkins, and former Senator James Abourezk. There are also five Jewish dissenters and several scholars on the list. Seemingly unaware of the AIPAC project, the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith almost simultaneously issued its own "enemies list": Pro-Arab Propaganda in America: Vehicles and Voices. It too is identified as a "first edition," and lists 31 organizations and 34 individuals. These books are nothing more than blacklists, reminiscent of the worst tactics of the McCarthy era. A similar "enemies list" is employed in AIPAC's extensive program at colleges and universities. Page 36 -- Effectiveness of AIPAC Paul Weyrich, who worked as a Senate aide before becoming a political analyst, details the effectiveness of AIPAC: It's a remarkable system they have. If you vote with them, or make a public statement they like, they get the word out fast through their own publications and through editors around the country who are sympathetic to their cause. Of course it works in reverse as well. if you say something they don't like, you can be denounced or censured through the same network. That kind of pressure is bound to affect Senators' thinking, especially if they are wavering or need support. Page 37 -- 'Our Access is Amazing' ... Encountered in a Capitol corridor one day, an AIPAC lobbyist said, "Tomorrow I will try to see five members of the House. I called this morning and confirmed every appointment, and I have no doubt I will get in promptly." Two days later, even he seemed somewhat awed by AIPAC's clout. He reported, "I made all five. I went right in to see each of them. There was no waiting. Our access is amazing." Page 43 -- NatPAC The largest pro-Israel PAC is the national Political Action Committee (NatPAC), headquartered in New York with Marvin Josephson, head of a theatrical and literary talent agency, as chairman. Its Washington-based executive director is Richard Altman, who previously worked as political director of AIPAC. It draws money heavily from the entertainment industry and got off to a fast start in 1982 when Woody Allen signed its first nationwide fund-raising appeal. The National Journal rates it as the nation's largest non-labor, non-business political action committee. Page 49 AIPAC Relentless An Ohio Congressman speaks of AIPAC with both awe and concern: AIPAC is the most influential lobby on Capitol Hill. They are relentless. They know what they're doing. They have the people for financial resources. They've got a lot going for them. Their basic underlying cause is one that most Americans sympathize with. But what distresses me is the inability of American policy-makers, because of the influence of AIPAC, to distinguish between our national interest and Israel's national interest. When these converge - wonderful! But they don't always converge. Page 54 -- B'nai B'rith Published Report 'A Complete Fabrication' An article in the B'nai B'rith Messenger charged that McCloskey had proposed that all rabbis be required to register as foreign agents, declaring that he had made the proposal in a meeting with the editors of the Los Angeles Times. The author assured his readers that the tidbit came from a "very reliable source," and the charge was published nationally. The charge was a complete fabrication, and the Times editor Tony Day was quick to back up McCloskey's denial. The Messenger published a retraction a month later, but the accusation lingered on. Even the Washington office of the Israeli lobby did not get the retraction message. In an interview about McCloskey two years later, Douglas Bloomfield, legislative director for AIPAC, apparently unaware of the retraction, repeated the accusation as fact. Page 57 -- McCloskey Hounded Through 'Tracking System' A tracking system initiated by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith assured that McCloskey would have no peace, even as a private citizen. the group distributed a memorandum containing details of his actions and speeches to its chapters around the country. According to the memo, it was designed to "assist" local ADL groups with "counteraction guidance" whenever McCloskey appeared in public. Page 70, 71 Congressmen's Reaction to Israeli Pressure Groups A veteran Ohio Congressman observes: When [Stephen] Solarz and others press for more money for Israel, nobody wants to say "No." You don't need many examples of intimidation for politicians to realize what the potential is. The Jewish lobby is terrific. Anything it wants, it gets. Jews are educated, often have a lot of money, and vote on the basis of a single issue - Israel. They are unique in that respect. For example, anti-abortion supporters are numerous but not that well educated, and don't have that much money. The Jewish lobbyists have it all, and they are political activists on top of it. This Congressman divides his colleagues into four groups: For the first group, it's rah, rah, give Israel anything it wants. The second group includes those with some misgivings, but they don't dare step out of line; they don't say anything. In the third group are Congressmen who have deep misgivings but who won't do more than try quietly to slow down the aid to Israel. Lee Hamilton is an example. The fourth groups consists of those who openly question U.S. policy in the Middle East and challenge what Israel is doing. Since Findley and McCloskey left, this group really doesn't exist anymore. He puts himself in the third group: "I may vote against the bill authorizing foreign aid this year for the first time. If I do, I will not state my reason." Solarz has never wavered in his commitment to Israel. Page 77 -- Many Jews Mistake Criticism of Israel for Anti-Semitism "What is tragic is that so many Jewish people misconstrue criticism of Israel as anti-Jewish or anti-Semitic." He speaks admiringly of the open criticism of Israeli policy that often occurs within Israel itself: "It is easier to criticize Israel in the Knesset [the Israeli parliament] than it is in the U.S. Congress, here in this land of free speech." Pages 78, 79 -- AIPAC Caught Napping -- Fail To Detect Rebellion in Congress For once, both the House Democratic leadership and AIPAC were caught napping. Usually in complete control of all legislative activities which relate to Israel, AIPAC failed to detect the brewing rebellion. Concern over the budget deficit and controversial provisions in the bill for Central America led these freshman democrats to oppose their own leadership. unable to offer amendments, they quietly agreed among themselves to oppose the whole package. When the roll was called the big electric board over the Speaker's desk showed defeat - the resolution was rejected, 206 to 203. Twenty-four first-term Democrats had deserted the leadership and voted no. Voting no did not mean they opposed Israeli aid. Some of them, concerned over the federal deficit, viewed it as a demand to the leadership to schedule a bill raising taxes. For others, it was simply a protest. But for Israel it was serious. "The Jewish community went crazy," a Capitol Hill veteran recalls. AIPAC's professionals went to work. Placing calls from their offices just four blocks away, they activated key people in the districts of a selected list of the errant freshmen. They arranged for "quality calls" to individuals who had played a major role in the recent Congressional election. Each was to place an urgent call to his or her Congressman, insist on getting through personally and use this message: Approval of the continuing resolution is very important. Without it, Israel will suffer. I am not criticizing your vote against it the first time. I am su re you had reasons. However, I have learned that the same question will come up for vote again, probably tomorrow. I speak for many of your friends and supporters in asking that you change your vote when the question comes up again. ... The urgent telephone messages from home carried the day. When the roll was called, 14 of the freshmen - a bit sheepishly - changed their votes. ... To give the freshmen an excuse they could use in explaining their embarrassing shift, the leadership promised to bring up a tax bill. Everyone knew it was just a ploy: the tax bill had no chance to become law. But the excuse was helpful, and the resolution was approved, 224 to 189. the flow of aid to Israel continued without interruption. Page 95 -- 'Israel Controls the Senate': Fullbright Appearing on CBS television's "Face the Nation" in 1973, [Senator William J.] Fullbright declared that the Senate was "subservient to Israeli policies which were inimical to American interests. He said the United States bears "a very great share of the responsibility" for the continuation of Middle East violence. "It's quite obvious [that] without the all-out support by the United States in money and weapons and so on, the Israeli couldn't do what they've been doing." Fullbright said the United States failed to pressure Israel for a negotiated settlement because The great majority of the Senate of the United States - somewhere around 80 percent - are completely in support of Israel, anything Israel wants. This has been demonstrated time and time again, and this has made it difficult for our government. The Senator claimed that "Israel controls the Senate," and warned, "We should be more concerned about the United States' interests." Page 101 -- President Ford backs Down Under Pressure ... It was a historic proposal, the first time since Eisenhower that a United States president even hinted publicly that he might suspend aid to Israel. Israel's response came, not from its own capital, but from the United States Senate. Instead of relying on a direct protest to the White House, Jerusalem activated its lobby in the United States, which, in turn, signed up as supporters of Israel's position more than three-fourths of the members of the United States Senate. A more devastating - and intimidating - response could scarcely be conceived. The seventy-six signatures effectively told Ford he could not carry out his threatened "reappraisal." Israel's loyalists in the Senate - Democrats and republicans alike - were sufficient in number to reject any legislative proposal hostile to Israel that Ford might make, and perhaps even enact a pro-Israeli piece of legislation over a presidential veto. The letter was a demonstration of impressive clout. Crafted and circulated by AIPAC, it had been endorsed overnight by a majority of the Senate membership. Several Senators who at first had said "No" quickly changed their positions. Senator John Culver admitted candidly, "The pressure was too great. I caved." So did President Ford. He backed down and never again challenged the lobby. Page 102 -- TV's 'Holocaust' Series 'Simplifies Lobbying' The Israeli lobby pulled out all the stops. It coordinated a nationwide public relations campaign which revived, as never before, memories of the genocidal Nazi campaign against European Jews during World War II. In the wake of the highly publicized television series, "Holocaust," Capitol Hill was flooded with complimentary copies of the novel on which the TV series was based. The books were accompanied by a letter from AIPAC saying, "This chilling account of the extermination of six million Jews underscores Israel's concerns during the current negotiations for security without reliance on outside guarantees." Concerning the book distribution, AIPAC's Aaron Rosenbaum told the Washington Post: "We think, frankly, that it will affect a few votes here and there, and simplify lobbying." Page 102, 103 -- AIPAC 'Demands 100 Percent' Loyalty [William] Hathaway was one of the forty-four who stuck with AIPAC, but this was not sufficient when election time rolled around. AIPAC wanted a Senator whose signature - and vote - it could always count on. Searching for unswerving loyalty, the lobby switched to Cohen. Its decision came at the very time Hathaway was resisting pressures on the Saudi issue. The staff at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was outraged. One of them declared to a visitor: "AIPAC demands 100 percent. If a fine Senator like Hathaway fails to cooperate just once, they are ready to trade in his career." A staff member of a Senate committee declared: "To please AIPAC, you have to be more pure than Ivory soap â*" 99.44 percent purity is not good enough." Lacking the purity AIPAC demanded, Hathaway was defeated in 1978. Page 106 -- Israeli Lobby Exerts 'More Constant Pressure' [Charles] Mathias cited the Israeli lobby as the most powerful ethnic pressuer group, noting that it differs from others in that it focuses on vital national security interests and exerts "more constant pressure." Other lobbying groups "show up in a crisis and then disappear" and tend to deal with domestic matters. Mathias continued: With the exception of the Eisenhower administration, which virtually compelled Israel's withdrawal from the Sinai after the 1956 war, American presidents, and to an even greater degree Senators and representatives, have been subjected to recurrent pressures from what has come to be known as the Israel lobby. Page 114 -- JFK 'Insulted' by Jewish Offer The night before, Kennedy had gone to dinner with a small group of wealthy and prominent Jews in New York. An episode of the evening had troubled him deeply. Describing it to Bartlett as an "amazing experience," he said one of those at the dinner party - he did not identify him by name - told him he knew his campaign was in financial difficulty and, speaking for the group, offered "to help and help significantly" if Kennedy as president "would allow them to set the course of Middle East policy over the next four years." It was an astounding proposition. Kennedy told Bartlett he reacted less as a presidential candidate than as a citizen. "He said he felt insulted," Bartlett recalls, "that anybody would make that offer, particularly to a man who even had a slim chance to be president. ..." Page 119 -- No Protestant Support 'All We Get Is A Battering From the Jews' A determined president [Eisenhower] took his case to the American people in a televised address in the spring of 1957: Should a nation which attacks and occupies foreign territory in the face of the United Nations disapproval be allowed to impose conditions on its own withdrawal? If we agreed that armed attack can properly achieve the purposes of the assailant, then I fear we will have turned back the clock of international order. Letters and telegrams poured into the White House, but almost all of the communications came from Jews, 90 percent supporting Israel's position. Dulles complained, "It is impossible to hold the line because we get no support from the Protestant elements in the country. All we get is a battering from the Jews." Page 127 -- Power From Willingness to Make Use of Charge of Anti-Semitism [George W.] Ball believes the lobby's instrument of greatest power is its willingness to make broad use of the charge of anti-Semitism. "They've got one great thing going for them. Most people are terribly concerned not to be accused of being anti-Semitic, and the lobby so often equates criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism. They keep pounding away at that theme, and people are deterred from speaking out." In Ball's view, many Americans feel a "sense of guilt" over the extermination of Jews by Nazi Germany. The result of this guilt is that the fear of being called anti-Semitic is "much more effective in silencing candidates and public officials than threats about campaign money or votes." Page 180-- Making It 'Hot Enough' on Campus In 1979 AIPAC established its Political Leadership Development Program, which trains student activists on how to increase pro-Israeli influence on campus. Coordinator Jonathan Kessler recently reported that in just four years "AIPAC's program has affiliated over 5,000 students on 350 campuses in all 50 states. They are systematically monitoring and comprehensively responding to anti-Israeli groups on campus. They are involved in pro-Israel legislative efforts, in electoral campaign politics as well. Page 239 -- Christian Affinity to Israel Virtually all Christians approach the Middle East with at least a subtle affinity to Israel and an inclination to oppose or mistrust any suggestion that questions Israeli policy. The lobby has drawn widely upon this support in pressing its national programs. More important, fresh perspectives which challenge shibboleths and established prejudices regarding the Middle East are often denounced by both the lobby and many of its Christian allies as politically extremist, anti-Semitic or even anti-Christian. The religious convictions of many Americans have made them susceptible to the appeals of the Israeli lobby, with the result that free speech concerning the Middle East and U.S. policy in the region is frequently restricted before it begins. The combination of religious tradition and overt lobby activity tends to confine legitimate discussion within artificially narrow bounds. Page 239 -- Conservative Christians Rally to the Cause Fundamentalist and evangelical groups have been active in this campaign to narrow the bounds of free speech. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson proselytize tirelessly for ever-increasing U.S. backing of Israel, citing scriptural passages as the basis for their arguments. As the membership of conservative Protestant churches and organizations has expanded over the last decade, this "Christian Zionist" approach to the Middle East has been espoused from an increasing variety of "pulpits": local churches, the broadcast media and even the halls of Congress. Page 240 -- Jerry Falwell Embodies Christian-Zionist Connection Jerry Falwell, leader of the Moral majority, and a personal friend of Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir, has been described by The Economist of London as "the silk-voiced ayatollah of Christian revivalism." Acclaimed in a Conservative Digest annual poll as the most-admired conservative outside of Congress (with President Reagan the runner-up). Falwell embodies the growing Christian-Zionist connection. He has declared: "I don't think America could turn its back on the people of Israel and survive. God deals with nations in relation to how those nations deal with the Jew." He has testified before Congressional committees in favor of moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Falwell is perhaps the best known of the pro-Israel fundamentalist spokesmen, but he is by no means the only one. Page 241 -- Televangelists Proclaim 'Sanctity of Israel' Radio and television broadcasts by Jim Bakker, Kenneth Copeland, Roberts, Swaggart and others routinely proclaim the sanctity of Israel through scriptural quotations, usually from the Old Testament, and then reinforce it with political and strategic arguments supplied by the broadcaster. Page 263 -- Catholic Nun Smeared by Jewish Publication Sister Miriam Ward, a professor of humanities at Trinity College in Vermont and a Catholic nun, has a long record of humanitarian concern for Palestinian refugees. By her own description, her role in LaGrange II wasmodest. "I had doubts about whether i could justify the expense of going," she recently recalled. Sister Miriam moderated a panel discussion and received an award for her humanitarian endeavors. Like Mr. Wagner, she knew from experience the price of speaking out on Palestinian questions. Her activities had also attracted hate mail and personal innuendoes. Still, she was not prepared for the smear which resulted from her participation at LaGrange. Sister Miriam was singled out for a personal attack in The Jewish Week-American Examiner, a prominent New York City Jewish publication. The June 21, 1981, issue gave prominent coverage to a scheme to disrupt Israeli policy on the occupied West Bank which Sister Miriam had supposedly advanced at the conference. The article claimed that she had urged that "churches finance a project with staff in the U.S. and fieldworkers in Israel and the West Bank for the purpose of 'spying on the Israelis.' " She was reported saying, "By the time the Israelis caught on to what was going on and expelled a fieldworker, they [presumably Sister Miriam and her co-conspirators] would have a replacement ready." The Jewish Week article added that "the proposal was accepted without dissent, and ways of obtaining church funds for it were discussed." The report was a complete fabrication. No one at the LaGrange Conference had suggested such a plan, least of all Sister Miriam, and she was stunned when Wagner telephoned from Chicago informing her of the printed allegations. Page 265 -- American Jews Made to Feel Guilty In its efforts to quell criticism of Israel, the pro-Israel community's first goal is to still Jewish critics. In this quest it receives strong support from the Israeli government. Every government of Israel gives high priority to maintaining unity among U.S. Jews. This unity is regarded as a main line of Israel's defense - second in importance only to the Israeli army - and essential to retaining the support Israel must have from the United States government. American Jews are made to feel guilty about enjoying safety and the good life in the United States while their fellow Jews in Israel hold the ramparts, pay high taxes, and fight wars. Page 269 -- Noam Chomsky One of Few Able to Criticize Israel In my 22 years in Congress, I can recall no entry in Congressional Record disclosing a speech critical of Israeli policy by a Jewish member of the House or Senate. Jewish members may voice discontent in private conversation but never on the public record. Only a few Jewish academicians, like Noam Chomsky, a distinguished linguist, have spoken out. Most, like Chomsky, are protected in their careers by tenure and thus are able to become controversial without jeopardizing their positions. Page 284 -- 'One Word of Sympathy' Can Bring Jewish Hate Mail Those who speak up pay a price, says Stone, noting that journalists with long records of championing Israeli causes are flooded with "Jewish hate mail, accusing them of anti-Semitism" if they dare express "one word of sympathy for Palestinian Arab refugees." Page 287 -- Lobby Tentacles Reach Even to 'Main Street' Efforts by the pro-Israel lobby to influence American opinion and policy most often focus on national institutions, particularly the federal government. yet the lobby in its various forms branches out widely into American life beyond the seat of government on the Potomac River. Local political leaders, businesses, organizations and private individuals in many fields experience unfair criticism and intimidation for becoming involved in the debate over Middle East issues. Many on "Main Street" have pad a price for speaking out. Particularly distressing are instances of discrimination against Americans of Arab ancestry. Page 295, 296 -- Possible Accusation of Anti-Semitism Keeps Journalists in Line The Israeli lobby works diligently to keep journalists from rowing against the tide of pro-Israel orthodoxy. This mission is accomplished in part through carefully arranged, "spontaneous" public outcries designed to intimidate. Columnist Rowland Evans writes: "When we write what is perceived to be an anti-Israeli column, we get mail from all over the country with the same points and phrasing. there is a consistent pattern." The ubiquitous cry of "anti-Semitism" is brought to bear on short notice, and it is this charge which has been most responsible for compelling journalists to give Israel better than equal treatment in coverage of Middle East events. Page 296 -- American Media 'Overwhelmed' by Lobby Pressure Journalist Harold R. Piety observes that "the ugly cry of anti-Semitism is the bludgeon used by the Zionists to bully non-Jews into accepting the Zionist view of world events, or to keep silent." In late 1978, Piety, withholding his identity in order not to irritate his employer, wrote an article on "Zionism and the American Press" for Middle East International in which he decried "the inaccuracies , distortions and - perhaps worstâ*" inexcusable omission of significant news and background material by the American media in its treatment of the Arab-Israeli conflict." Piety traces the deficiency of U.S. media in reporting on the Middle East to largely successful efforts by the pro-Israel lobby to "overwhelm the American media with a highly professional public relations campaign, to intimidate the media through various means and, finally, to impose censorship when the media are compliant and craven." He lists threats to editors and advertising departments, orchestrated boycotts, sanders, campaigns of character assassination, and personal vendettas among the weapons employed against balanced journalism. Page 301 -- Radio Producer 'Terminated' For Trying to Balance Coverage On a Saturday morning in 1977 producer Debbie Gage encountered peril of a different sort when she put on a one-hour program of interviews with local people of Palestinian origin on Minneapolis Public Radio. The station's switchboard was promptly swamped with calls demanding equal time for the Israeli viewpoint. Gage demurred, responding that she had decided to do her program because of the heavy coverage being given to the Israeli view in the local press. She saw her broadcast as "simply a small attempt to redress that imbalance." The following Monday news director Gary Eichten informed Gage that her job would be terminated in three weeks and that a program devoted to pro-Israelt views would be aired the following Saturday. Eichten denied that he was pressured into doing the follow-up program, but, as station intern Yvonne Pearson observes, "If dozens of angry phone calls aren't pressure, I don't know what is." Page 303 -- 'Army of Workers' Swamp Congressmen, Editors Major national media have not escaped these pressures. Organized letter campaigns are a favored tactic of pro-Israel groups. Lawrence Mosher, a staff correspondent for the National Journal, observes that such groups have a seemingly indefatigable army of workers who will generate hundreds or thousands of letters to Congressmen, to newspaper editors, etc., whenever the occasion seems to warrant it. . . . Editors are sometimes weighed down by it in advance and inhibited from doing things they would normally do if they didn't know that an onslaught of letters, cables and telephone calls would follow if they write or show such and such. Page 311, 312 -- Holocaust Museum Director Berenbaum (Former Lobbyist) in the Newsroom Fairness in reporting Middle East events has been a special concern of the Washington Post over the last several years. Complaints from pro-Israel groups about its coverage of Lebanon - especially the nassacres at Sabra and Shatila â*" led to the unprecedented placement of a representative from a pro-Israel group as an observer in the Post newsroom. The idea arose when Michael Berenbaum, executive director of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington, council president Nathan Lewin, and Hyman Bookbinder, area representative of the American Jewish Committee, met with Post editors to inform them that the paper had "a Jewish problem." The meeting followed substantial correspondence between the Washington Post and Jewish community leaders. As an accommodation, executive editor Benjamin C. Bradlee agreed to have Berenbaum observe Post news operations for one week, provided he not lobby or "interfere with the editorial process in any way." Page 313 -- Pressure to 'Stop the Ads' Direct pressure to reject paid advertising unsympathetic to Israeli interests was applied beginning in late 1982 against major media in Maryland, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. The National Association of Arab Americans (NAAA), a Washington-based private membership organization, purchased radio air time in these areas for commercials questioning the U.S. government's decision to increase aid to Israel. Typical of the messages was this one aired in Pennsylvania: While there are more than 12 million Americans unemployed, with over half a million from Pennsylvania alone, Congress decided to give Israel two billion, 485 million of your tax dollars. Senator Arlen Specter [D-PA] is on the Senate Appropriations Committee that wanted to give Israel even more. Is funding for Israel more important than funding for Pennsylvania? Call your senators and ask them if they voted to give your tax dollars to Israel." Thirteen Pennsylvania stations contracted to carry the NAAA message, but four of these canceled the ads after only three days of an agreed-upon five-day run. Mike Kirtner, an ad salesman representing two stations in Allentown, informed the NAAA that its ads were being taken off the air because "they were getting a lot of calls, hate calls. and a lot of pressure was coming down on the station to stop the ads." Station management refused to comment on who was pressuring the station to take the ads off the air. Mike George, salesman for an Erie station which canceled the ads, was more frank.
