The Zionists plan to picket the event, draped in their Israeli flags. Aside from those attending the all-day conference, it is important to have a good turnout in front of the school to provide security for the event, particularly given what Israel has done today on Gaza and will likely still be doing come the weekend. It is important to point out that this Israeli invasion of Jabaliya had already been announced in the Israeli press well in advance. There is no end to the blood on the hands of Ariel Sharon, and not enough Yom Kippurs left for supporters of Israel to atone what is going on in their name and with their support. By Bonnie Eslinger | Staff Writer Published on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 URL: http://www.examiner.com/article/index.cfm/i/092904n_schools E-mail this story | Print this page Jewish groups are protesting the use of San Francisco Unified School District property for a pro-Palestine conference this weekend that they claim supports "hate and genocide." A group called Justice in Palestine Coalition is renting space at Horace Mann Middle School on Saturday from the district for a day-long conference. About 200 people are expected to attend the event, billed as "The Struggle for Palestine: 4th Anniversary of the Intifada," which will include panel discussions, workshops and cultural performances. This week, S.F. Voice for Israel, along with Protest Warrior, have been alerting their supporters about the event by phone and e-mail and encouraging them to contact the Mayor's Office, the Board of Supervisors and school board commissioners to have the event shut down. "We see this as a conference to foster terrorism and killing in the Middle East," said Dr. Daniel Kliman, spokesman for S.F. Voice for Israel. "Supporting terror is illegal in this country." Superintendent Arlene Ackerman said the district was legally required to provide the use of its facilities for community use. Conference organizers have used Horace Mann before without any problems, according to the district, and have filed all the appropriate paperwork for this weekend's conference. Event sponsors defended their cause and their right to host the conference. "The event is to educate those who want to learn more about the conditions of the Palestinian people and their struggle for self-determination against the U.N.-recognized Israeli occupation," said Justice in Palestine Coalition organizer Saul Kanowitz, a self-proclaimed "anti-Zionist Jew." Pro-Israel activists, though, say the sponsors have ulterior motives. "They say they're supporting the resistance in Palestine, obviously the event is to celebrate the Intifada, which is basically a call for terrorist acts and the murder of Israelis," said Anti-Defamation League Regional Director Jonathan Bernstein. "Here's this group that's advocating terrorism on our public school grounds that we pay taxes to support."
