| Institute for Historical Review Learning from the September 11 Attacks By Mark Weber - September 15, 2001 Find this article at: http://www.ihr.org/jhr/v20/v20n4p-8_Weber.html Published in The Journal of Historical Review, July-August 2001 (Vol. 20, No. 4), pages 8-9. (This essay has been circulated worldwide, in English, German and Arabic, in print and on numerous websites.) With thousands of victims and riveting images of death and destruction, war has come home to America with terrible, devastating suddenness. Together with our fellow citizens, we mourn the many victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon building. But beyond the feelings of grief and fury must come clarity and understanding. President George W. Bush said on national television that "America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world." The next day he said that "freedom and democracy are under attack," and that the perpetrators had struck against "all freedom-loving people everywhere in the world." But if "democracy" and "freedom-loving people" are the targets, why isn't anyone attacking Switzerland, Japan or Norway? Bush's claims are just as untrue as President Wilson's World War I declaration that the United States was fighting to "make the world safe for democracy," and President Roosevelt's World War II assurances that the U.S. was fighting for "freedom" and "democracy." In the wake of the September 11 attacks, speculation has been rife about who the perpetrators may have been. That itself is an acknowledgment that so many people hate this country so intensely that one cannot easily determine just who may have mounted these well-organized attacks of suicidal desperation. These shocking attacks were predictable. In 1993 Islamic radicals set off a bomb at the World Trade Center that claimed six lives. In August 1998 the United States carried out missile attacks against Afghanistan and Sudan, strikes that senior Clinton administration officials said signaled the start of "a real war against terrorism." In the wake of those attacks, a high-ranking U.S. intelligence official warned that "the prospect of retaliation against Americans is very, very high.'" (The Washington Post, Aug. 21, 1998, p. A1) Our political leaders and the American mass media promote the preposterous fiction that the September 11 attacks are entirely unprovoked and unrelated to United States actions. They want everyone to believe that the underlying hatred of America by so many around the world, especially in Arab and Muslim countries, that motivated the perpetrators of the September 11 attacks is unrelated to this country's policies. It is clear, however, that those who carried out these devastating suicide attacks against centers of American financial and military might were enraged by this country's decades-long support for Israel and its policies of aggression, murderous repression, and brutal occupation against Arabs and Muslims, and/or American air strikes and economic warfare against Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq and Iran. America is the only country that claims the right to deploy troops and war planes in any corner of the globe in pursuit of what our political leaders call "vital national interests." George Washington and our country's other founders earnestly warned against such imperial arrogance, while far-sighted Americans such as Harry Elmer Barnes, Garet Garrett and Pat Buchanan voiced similar concerns in the 20th century. For most Americans modern war has largely been an abstraction -- something that happens only in far-away lands. The victims of U.S. air attack and bombardment in Vietnam, Lebanon, Sudan, Libya, Iraq and Serbia have seemed somehow unreal. Few ordinary Americans pay attention, because U.S. military actions normally have little impact on their day-to-day lives. Just as residents of Rome in the second century hardly noticed the battles fought by their troops on the outer edges of the Roman empire, residents of Seattle and Cleveland today barely concern themselves with the devastation wrought by American troops and warplanes in, for example, Iraq. Ramsey Clark, former U.S. Attorney General, has accused the United States of committing "a crime against humanity" against the people of Iraq "that exceeds all others in its magnitude, cruelty and portent." Citing United Nations agency reports and his own on-site investigations, Clark charged in 1996 that the scarcity of food and medicine as a result of sanctions against Iraq imposed by the United States since 1990, and U.S. bombings of the country, had caused the deaths of more than a million people, including more than half a million children. Madeleine Albright, Secretary of State in President Clinton's administration, defended the mass killings. During a 1996 interview she was asked: "We have heard that half a million children have died [as a result of sanctions against Iraq]. I mean, that is more children than died in Hiroshima ... Is the price worth it?" Albright replied: "... We think the price is worth it." (60 Minutes, May 12, 1996). President Bush is now pledging a "crusade," a "war against terrorism" and a "sustained campaign" to "eradicate the evil of terrorism." But such calls sound hollow given the U.S. government's own record of support for terrorism, for example during the Vietnam war. During the 1980s, the U.S. supported "terrorists" in Afghanistan -- including Osama bin Laden, now the "prime suspect" in the September 11 attacks -- in their struggle to drive out the Soviet invaders. American presidents have warmly welcomed to the White House Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir, two Israeli prime ministers with well-documented records as terrorists. President Bush himself has welcomed to Washington Israel's current prime minister, Ariel Sharon, whose forces have been carrying out assassinations of Palestinian leaders and murderous "retaliatory" strikes against Palestinians. Even an official Israeli commission found that Sharon bore some responsibility for the 1982 massacres of Palestinian civilians in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. Jewish and Zionist leaders, and their American servants, have predictably lost no time exploiting the September 11 attacks to further their own interests. Taking advantage of the current national mood of blind rage and revenge, they demand new U.S. military action against Israel's many enemies. In the weeks to come, therefore, we can expect the U.S. government, supported by an enraged public, to lash out violently. The great danger is that an emotion-driven, reactive response will aggravate underlying tensions and encourage new acts of murderous violence. What is needed now is not a vengeful "crusade," but coherent, reasoned policies based on sanity and justice. In the months and years ahead, most Americans will doubtless continue to accept what their political leaders and the mass media tell them. But the jolting impact of the September 11 attacks -- which have, for the first time, brought to our cities the terror and devastation of attacks from the sky -- will also encourage growing numbers of thoughtful Americans to see through the lies propagated by our nation's political and cultural elite, and its Zionist allies, to impose their will around the world. More and more people will understand that their government's overseas policies inevitably have consequences even here at home. In 1948, as the Zionist state was being established in Palestine, U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall, along with nearly every other high-level U.S. foreign affairs specialist, warned that American support for Israel would have dire long-term consequences. Events have fully vindicated their concerns. Over the long run, the September 11 attacks will encourage public awareness of our government's imperial role in the world, including a sobering reassessment of this country's perverse "special relationship" with the Jewish ethnostate. Along with that, rage will grow against those who have subordinated American interests, and basic justice and humanity, to Jewish-Zionist ambitions. For more than 20 years the IHR has sought, through its educational work, to prevent precisely such horrors as the attacks in New York and Washington. In the years ahead, as we continue our mission of promoting greater public awareness of history and world affairs, and a greater sense of public responsibility for the policies that generated the rage behind the September 11 attacks, this work will be more important than ever. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Peace is patriotic! The question has become almost proverbial after it has been asked so many times since the tragedy of 9-11: "Why do they hate us?" No, it's not because they despise our free society or our women going around in skimpy clothing. And it's not because most of us are Christians, Jews, or secular unbelievers and therefore not Muslims. It started long ago well before the terrorists who came to our American shores were even born. They keep telling us the real reason, but we will not listen. To hear and to understand and to reply effectively, we would have to admit our nation's bias for over a half century against the Arab people and other Muslim nations. We created the reason for their hostility toward us. It is we and not they who started the grotesque "clash of civilizations" we now see facing us over the next generation or more. Let us see what Arabs and other Muslims have repeatedly been saying for over fifty years. In a November 1947 article, entitled "As the Arabs See the Jews," in The American Magazine, His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan said: "I believe that you do not realize how directly you are, as a nation, responsible in general for the whole Zionist move and specifically for the present terrorism. I call this to your attention because I am certain that if you realize your responsibility, you will act fairly to admit it and assume it." In an October 1954 report, entitled, "King Saud Interview by Lilienthal on Arab-American Relations and Zionism," in The Federal Herald, the following exchange took place between anti-Zionist Jewish American historian Alfred M. Lilienthal and King Saud of Saudi Arabia. Mr. Lilienthal: "Your Majesty a few months ago, said that the Arabs do not care if they sacrifice a few million persons in order to put an end to the Zionists in Palestine." His Majesty then said: "Frankly what I said is what I urge and preach. It is the only answer to what has been published by the responsible persons of Israel about the necessity that Israel should expand to comprise the beds of the Tigris and Euphrates, the Sinai Peninsula and the northern part of Saudi Arabia, including Medina, which is one of the two Holy Towns and the Burial place of the Moslems€™ Prophet, and which is after all my own land and the land of every Arab and Moslem. We have learned of this Zionist ambition from the statements of Israeli leaders and its creators who pleaded the course yesterday, and are still pleading it today. They are making no secret of this scheme, and they have made its study part of the school curriculum in Israel, where they cram the students€™ heads with these fanciful schemes. There is no answer to what they are after except this antidote, and the preparation of what we can in field of might and force." On June 4, 1983, Imam Khomeini of Iran wrote, "I warn the governments of the Islamic countries. They should know that Israel, as I have said again and again and as you have heard time and again, will not be satisfied with these agreements. It sees the Arab governments from the Nile to the Euphrates as usurpers, and sooner or later with the help of America it will put its malicious plan into action if, God forbid, it should find the opportunity and if the Arab governments do not awaken from their deep slumber. Is it not a source of shame for the Muslims and the governments of the Islamic countries that America, from the other side of the world, can govern their destinies and through the usurping infidel, Israel, can ensnare and ruin them all?" Every Arab and Muslim knows about this supposed Zionist plot to continue to occupy not only all of the Palestinian territories but to also eventually conquer most of the Arab nations to establish what is known as Greater Israel. They know about it even if they do not necessarily believe it. Most Americans, however, have never heard about this strange dreadful conspiracy, or they dismiss it as the ravings of madmen like Osama Bin Laden. Yes, Osama has claimed this too as one of his primary reasons for attacks upon America. On February 16, 2003, the content of a tape recording reportedly from Bin Laden was made public. The Reuters news service version stated, "Bin Laden said an attack on Iraq would be followed by U.S. €œaggressions€ against more Arab countries such as Egypt, Sudan, Iran and Syria for the benefit of its ally Israel. €œThis attack on Iraq is part of a new crusade to prepare the region, after dividing it, for the creation of a Greater Israel. This means the whole region will be ruled by Jews,€ he said. The recording began with bin Laden identifying the United States and its €œfoolish€ President George W. Bush as the enemy." As the ferocious "Shock and Awe" U.S. bombing of Baghdad takes place, not only is President Bush looking foolish in waging a war against Iraq that looks suspiciously like the start of a war against Islam. There are dozens of officials in his administration who are currently bragging about the next American wars seemingly at least in part on behalf of Israel. On February 17, 2003, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz carried this headline, "U.S. official to Israel: We'll deal with Syria, Iran after Iraq war." Hmm, isn€™t that exactly the same thing that Bin Laden was charging against America in the news only the day before? Worse yet, the persons this pledge was being made to were Sharon, Netanyahu, and Sharansky who happen to be well known for their determination to bring millions of more Jews from America and around the world into Israel itself as well as to maintain and expand the settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. The American official responsible for this outrageous statement is Under Secretary of State John Bolton, a close associate of the well known Jewish and Christian Zionists actually in the Bush administration or who are influencing it from neo-conservative think-tanks: Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Perle, Wolfowitz, Abrams. Plus many others. In President Bush€™s (justifications for war on Iraq) speech on February 26, 2003 before a gathering of his apparently favorite think-tank, he proudly proclaimed, "At the American Enterprise Institute, some of the finest minds in our nation are at work on some of the greatest challenges to our nation. You do such good work that my administration has borrowed 20 such minds." A visit to the American Enterprise Institute website, and reading the magazine of the Institute on the Internet, will quickly reveal an abundance of quotes hostile to Arabs and Islam. Example: "It is useless for the West to insist it is not at war with Islam. Islam itself is on trial here; it must now choose its path." Currently as the war on Iraq is taking place, we have been hearing that the new democratic government for the liberated Iraq will not be a puppet regime run by stooges of American and Israeli interests. It does not take long for another American official with Zionist ties to prove otherwise. At the Washington Foreign Press Center Briefing in Washington, DC on March 19, 2003, Marc Grossman, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, happened to ridiculously claim about the new Iraqi democracy that will replace Saddam€™s tyranny, "And in terms of whether the first thing they do will be to recognize the State of Israel, I have no idea. But I certainly hope it's among the very first things that they do." So, first we install a phony democratic regime in Iraq to embrace Israel as its best buddy. Next we have an American attack on Iran and Syria and on and on with the falling dominos of Islamic countries all the way to Saudi Arabia. Will we have in their place an entire Middle East of democratic puppet regimes in service of Zionism? The American Enterprise Institute magazine has proclaimed, "We€™ll win this war!" The two illustrations of the enemy used are of the crescent and star of Islam and a photo of a vast gathering of Muslims kneeling in prayer. We will indeed win this war of our own making if we want to bomb billions of Muslims into oblivion and occupy their devastated countries, as Perle and the rest of the ultra-Zionists who influence Bush would seem to be deceptively leading us to do. If, however, we wish to win the minds and hearts of our Muslim brothers and sisters to join with them in a new century of peace, we need to listen. Why do they hate us, and why would they stop hating us? King Abdullah of Jordan stated the problem but also stated the solution as long ago as 1947, "I have the most complete confidence in the fair-mindedness and generosity of the American public. We Arabs ask no favours. We ask only that you know the full truth, not half of it." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace is patriotic!
