Israel's attack on the USS Liberty spy ship during the 1967 Six Day War will be revisited during a Lower Hudson Valley speaking tour by three of the ship's sailors.
Their talks will take place at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Suffern Library and 2:30 p.m Sunday at the Fellowship of Reconciliation in Upper Nyack.
They also will be speaking at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Memorial United Methodist Church in White Plains.
On June 8, 1967, Israeli pilots attacked the USS Liberty, killing 34 sailors and wounding 174 others. The attack came during the fourth day of Israel's Six Day War against the Arab nations.
The speaking tour - sponsored by a Rockland veterans peace group, a pro-Palestinian organization and Liberty groups - will rekindle the 41-year debate on Israel's motivation for attacking the ship.
The Liberty sailors and their supporters believe United States presidents and many officials has covered up for Israel for more 40 years.
One reason they give for the attack was Israel's attempt to hide its military operation and possible war crimes during the Six Day War.
Ten U.S. investigations and three official Israeli inquiries have all established the attack was a mistake, not malicious. There also have been reports from the CIA and other agencies calling the attack an accident.
Supporters of Israel who feel the Liberty veterans are more interested in promoting anti-Israel propaganda will show up at the Suffern Library.
In 2003, the U.S. National Security Agency released tapes that showed Israeli pilots and other officers discussing the Liberty as an Arab ship moments before the attack.
