| It's time to declassify Liberty records

The 41st anniversary of the attack on the USS Liberty was June 8.
During the attack, jets and torpedo boats of Israel assaulted the American naval vessel in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. The attack was preceded by more than six hours of intense, lowlevel surveillance by Israeli photoreconnaissance aircraft, which buzzed the intelligence ship 13 times, sometimes flying as low as 200 feet directly overhead.
The attack lasted more than two hours -- killing 34 Americans and wounding 171 others -- and inflicted 821 rocket and machinegun holes in the ship.
And when the USSLiberty stubbornly remained afloat, Israeli forces machinegunned her life rafts and sent troopcarrying helicopters in to finish the job.
At this point, with rescue aircraft from the U.S. Sixth Fleet finally en route, the Israelis apologized and the attacking forces suddenly withdrew.
The above statement is from the book "Assault on the Liberty" by James M. Ennes Jr.
At the time of the attack, Ennes was a lieutenant serving on the USS Liberty, and he was wounded.
It turned out the Israelis were trying to destroy the ship so information on the planned invasion of the Golan Heights that night would not be divulged.
The United Nations was preparing a cease-fire resolution to be effective that evening.Israel invaded as planned and remains the occupying power 41 years later.

Now why would they do that?
