| The common US Jews like Cowboy speaks his "brand" truth of loyalty USS LIBERTY Ship was in war zone Many letters misstate the Israeli attack on USS Liberty to have been illegal. This is clearly not the case. The undisputed facts are that USS Liberty was in an active war zone. It was actively intercepting and analyzing Israeli military transmissions. This was an inimitable threat to the sovereignty of Israel. Thus, the ship was not engaged in innocent passage, as required for protection under the law of the sea. At that time, the United States was not an ally of Israel; it was actually on friendlier terms with several Arab states. If I had been the commander in chief of the Israeli force, I would have attacked. What Israel did or did not know about the identity of the ship is really a moot point. MURRAY SOBEL, retired, Jacksonville USS LIBERTY Truth cannot be obscured A recent letter referred to the findings of the 2003 Independent Moorer Commission of Inquiry into the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. The attack occurred on the third day of the June 1967 Six-Day War. The nongovernment-sponsored inquiry was conducted 36 years after the event by a group that rejected 10 previous U.S. investigations and three earlier Israeli investigations, including the 1967 U.S. Navy and Joint Chiefs of Staff inquiries. The group also ignored key pieces of evidence, including actual voice tapes of the Israeli pilots' communications immediately before and after the event. (Before attack tapes never released-JD) Nor did the commission consider that Israel attacked a column of its own troops during the 1967 war. Foreign funding from those hostile to Israel and statements by it unconnected with the encounter belie any appearance of neutrality in its constituents or findings. The group included a former ambassador to Saudi Arabia. It is a tragic fact that mistakes are made during wartime. The recent death of former NFL player Patrick Tillman who was killed by U.S. forces in Iraq was a reminder. An alarmingly high number of U.S. casualties in the invasion of Iraq were from friendly fire. In the case of the USS Liberty, culpability for this tragic and unintentional mistake lies at multiple levels on both the U.S. and Israeli sides. The Moorer commission cannot obscure the truth by a biased inquiry nearly 40 years after the fact.
