John Hrankowski was a fireman on the USS Liberty. He explains why he's convinced the attack was not accidental and how he's trying to persuade the US Congress that he's right.
BBC Four: Why do you maintain that it was a deliberate attack rather than a case of mistaken identity?
John Hrankowski: Accidents usually happen for a few minutes. This lasted for two and half-hours and it's been covered up for 35 years. I can tell you from catching the shrapnel and fighting the fires that this was no accident. It was a well co-ordinated attack.
BBC Four: Isn't it conceivable that the Israelis did think the Liberty was an Egyptian ship?
JH: Not a chance. Mosad and their spying network knew exactly what that horse carrier was, knew its capabilities. They claimed it was the El Quesir. That's not true. It is critical that they maintain it was an accident. After 35 years people are starting to believe it wasn't an accident. They're starting to listen to us.

BBC Four: Admiral Shlomo Erell claims that if it was a deliberate attack then they would have made a much better job of it.
JH: They were just unlucky. They should have sunk the ship. The pictures speak for themselves: they tore that ship open. The napalm just burnt all the way down. They fired torpedoes. Two of them missed and one hit the starboard side. They proved to be terrible shots and only one hit us. It hit us in a very critical point. They even shot the life rafts up.
BBC Four: As well as the life rafts, one of the other bones of contention is whether or not the Liberty's flag was visible. What's your view on that?
JH: I'd seen the flag before the attack started. Every ship flies a flag. They shot down the first flag that was up there and within seconds the holiday ensign was up there, which was a 13-foot flag. As far as the life rafts go, people testified to this during the enquiry and it was never added to the testimony. I did not see it but there are people who have said that they saw them shoot up the life rafts. What reason have we got to lie? We're just telling it like it happened.

BBC Four: If it was not accidental, are there any particular theories you find most compelling as to why the Liberty was attacked?
JH: For the life of me I don't know. I don't think any of our guys do. The Israelis have got to tell us. There's a lot our government can tell us too. For our government to tell their planes to abandon us - evidently they had to have known something too. We know that there are still a lot of top secret classified papers from the National Security Agency and other organisations in the States. Hopefully those will hold the answers. I don't know what was on [President] Johnson's mind. I have no idea if he was talking to Israelis. That's why we need an investigation. We need to pull all the papers together.
BBC Four: Do the people from the Johnson administration deny that they recalled the flights?
JH: They don't deny it. They won't talk about it. [Johnson's Secretary of Defence] Robert McNamara, who was part of the cover-up, recalled two of the planes. He conveniently says he doesn't remember. Other times he says, "I don't know" and other times he says "I'm not going to talk about it." He knows something - he knows an awful lot. President Johnson - he had to have known at the time and there are still other people around that know why this happened. There are laws against abandoning someone under fire and that's exactly what McNamara and the Johnson administration did. We were under attack for nearly two hours. For the first nine minutes they didn't know but after that they did not send help. Not that we didn't ask. We asked for help.
BBC Four: What sort of campaigning work are you and the other survivors doing to get people to look into this again?
JH: We're at it every day. We write our letters, we talk to people, we tell our story, we tell them to write to Congress and ask for a congressional investigation.

I was just reading through some of your old posts (and long ones at that  ). I have known about this incident for some time, but and I have never heard this version before. The official report is here:

But it is not complete, there has been a cover-up about the incident since it first happened:
The vessel had been circled regularly by Israeli warplanes. Some of the planes had come so close that sailors were able to wave at the pilots, who waved back. Unconcerned, American sailors were on the deck sunbathing. The Israelis suddenly attacked without warning, their fighter jets had been painted to appear as if they were Egyptian fighters (Remember that Israel was at war with Egypt). The Liberty was initially unable to call for help since the Israelis were jamming radio channels. The attack continued for about one hour and 15 minutes, this was no accident. After the attack, an Israeli ship approached the Liberty and the captain asked if they needed any assistance. - as if they had come to their rescue. The Captain of the Liberty knew it had been a coordinated air-sea attack, he told the Israeli captain to F-off.
BTW: The Mossad‘s motto is: “By way of deceit, thou shalt make war.”
They were attempting to provoke the U.S. into taking over their war with Egypt.
