US Deploys Stealth Bombers for Possible Iraq War
Thu March 13, 2003 10:04 AM ET
By Charles Aldinger WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has begun deploying radar-avoiding B-2 stealth bombers, which pack one of the biggest punches in the U.S. arsenal, for use in a possible war against Iraq, the military said on Thursday.
The bat-wing bombers flew out of Whiteman Air Force base in Missouri on Wednesday night, a spokesman for the 509th Bomb Wing told Reuters.

They will join a massive potential attack force of more than 250,000 American and British troops, hundreds of warplanes and dozens of ships already gathered in the Gulf region.

The spokesman would not say how many B-2s had been sent or where they were would be based.

But the high-tech bombers, and each capable of carrying 16 satellite-guided 2,000-pound bombs, were believed headed for the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia.

The Air Force has built special hangars on an air base at Diego Garcia as well as at the Royal Air Force Base at Fairford in the United Kingdom. Support crews for bombers began leaving Whiteman, where 21 B-2s are based, earlier this week.

"We have deployed B-2s to the Central Command area of responsibility," said Air Force Lt. Matt Hasson, a spokesman for the bomb wing at Whiteman. "Last night we launched them."

'WE ARE FOCUSED'

The B-2, originally developed for long-range missions in the Cold War, was not available in the 1991 Gulf War. Whiteman is the bombers' only base, where the first of was delivered in 1993.

The aircraft made its debut in combat operations in the Kosovo campaign in 1999. It flew nonstop all the way from the base in Missouri, attacked targets in Yugoslavia and returned to the base with the aid of aerial refueling.

The B-2 also saw action in the opening three days of the war in Afghanistan launched weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

The Air Force says the B-2 provides four key characteristics: stealth, precision weapons, large payload and long range, making the warplane a real revolution in air warfare.

It's low-observable, or "stealth," characteristics give it the ability to penetrate an enemy's most sophisticated defenses and threaten its most valued and heavily defended targets.

The B-2s join a long list of Navy and Air Force warplanes already mobilized for possible war with Baghdad.

The Pentagon on Feb. 3 sent F-117A "Nighthawk" stealth fighters to the region from Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. The angular Nighthawk was the only western aircraft used to strike targets in heavily-defended downtown Baghdad during the Gulf War. (Additional reporting by Will Dunham)

US SOLDIERS STORM CAMP

10:30 - 11 March 2003

Armed Us troops stormed the peace camp at RAF Fairford and ripped protesters' banners off the fence.

Dressed in boiler suits and armed with serrated combat knives, the men stripped the 10ft steel fence at Gate 10. By 2pm yesterday they were putting up a barbed wire fence to keep the demonstrators at bay.

Gloucestershire police intervened after airforce personnel and 12 protesters began to wrestle with the peace banners.

The campaigners were given 40 minutes to move their camp after local police negotiated between them and airbase staff.

They have now moved several metres away from Gate 10, on Top Road.

Protesters worked through the night to rebuild their camp as B52 bombers tested their engines on the runway.

Sarj, a healthcare worker and a student, said: "The American airforce personnel were very aggressive.

"One soldier hacked at my banner with a combat knife as I was trying to tug it away from the fence.

"They told us that if we were in their country then we would be thrown in jail for what we were doing.

"If the local police hadn't been there the situation could have escalated into something much worse.

"This is just another case of Americans trying to push people about and have their own way and we're not standing for it.

"We are here protesting by rights and in a peaceful manner. We've camped here in temperatures below freezing so something like this isn't going to stop us now."

Protesters have been camping at Fairford since February 17.

Their numbers swelled in the run up to a peace rally on February 23, and more have been arriving each day.

The camp moved to gate 10 when B-52 bombers arrived last week.

Rolls of razor wire were laid inside the perimeter fence to keep them out last Friday.

Ministry of Defence spokesman, Sqn Ldr John Morris, said the special Herras fencing was an extension of security around gate 10.

"The fencing has been put up to help people identify where Ministry of Defence property begins and ends," he said.

"The reason why it has been put up now is that it was a low priority project and this was the last area to be fenced off.

"As far as I know peace protesters were not treated badly and their banners were taken down as they were on MoD property and it was our entitlement.

"The fence has now been moved up to the boundary of MoD property separating it from the highway."

Nuala Young, from Oxford, said: "The security here has been shown up recently with people getting on the runway so this is just too little too late.

"We need to be here to make sure these bombers don't fly off to Iraq without the backing of the UN.

"We are the eyes and ears for the people of this country and are letting them know what is going on with these planes."

Military personnel have also added a heavier and higher security gate to the main entrance. A crane lifted it into place on Friday.

The step-up in security came after two women breached the perimeter fence and got on to the base's 100,000ft runway.

A 61-year-old grandmother from Hull was arrested for aggravated trespass after she breached the perimeter fence and allegedly sat beneath a B-52 bomber for two hours last Monday.

A second female protester was arrested last Tuesday after she climbed on to the fence holding a purple banner reading "no war".

Evesham protester Kate Holcombe has been charged with criminal damage amounting to £8,000 after the main gate was pulled down during the peace demonstration on February 23.

Yesterday, a further nine protesters were arrested and charged with aggravated trespass after an alleged break-in at the base.

The group were accused of cutting through the fencing.

Gloucestershire protester Dave Cockcroft said: "Last night, we had a few drinks and are in high spirits. We're all hanging in there and refuse to be intimidated."

He added: "At the moment activity is very quiet on the base. They're moving some of the bombers around but other than that it seems very quiet."

Peace protesters at RAF Fairford were warned on March 6 they could be taking their lives in their hands if they break into the US airbase.

Police said trespassers will be putting themselves in danger because of aircraft manoeuvres.

A total of 14 B-52 bombers are stationed on the base and there have also been sightings of 63-ft U2 spy planes and C-17 Globemaster cargo planes.

Here is a reply from Senator Bob Brown of the Green Party in Australia to the same letter which I sent to Jean Chretien the Canadian PM :

Please do what you and the Australian people can do to stop this war. A
terrible crime of mass murder is in preparation. As civilised people we
cannot allow this to go unchecked.
The disarming of Saddam can be accomplished by other means. The
control of the oil fields can only be accomplished by invasion and this
is the real target Bush is aiming for.

Saturday, 15th March 2003

Dear Alan (in the U.K),

Thank you for your email expressing your concern about the war on Iraq.

The Australian Greens' strong position is that the extension of the United States 'war on terrorism' to Iraq is unacceptable, with or without United Nations endorsement.

The Greens have been active in opposing the war, both in Parliament and outside. Greens all over the country and around the world have joined the millions of people rallying for peace, and Greens MPs spoke at most of the peace rallies in Australia from the 14-16 February.

In Parliament, both Kerry Nettle and I have spoken out against war and proposed an amendment against Australian involvement in the War on Iraq. Unfortunately, the ALP and the Government combined in the Senate to vote down the Greens proposal.

While there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein is an oppressive dictator who deserves international condemnation, the Australian Greens recognise the need for a program for peace. Further military action and continued sanctions are likely to hurt the Iraqi people while doing little to destabilise Hussein. Armed intervention will not help establish democracy in Iraq.

The Greens will continue to campaign strongly against Australia's involvement in a 'war on terrorism'. We believe that the solution is an international effort to help the people of Iraq, and other similar countries, to rebuild their society and infrastructure. This must include efforts to support and empower a movement for democracy within the country. It is only peaceful solutions such as these that will bring long-term success. If you would like to order a ten page Green's 'No War' action kit, please call 03 6234 1633

Yours Sincerely

Bob Brown

It seems that if we just keep plugging away at Anglo's list we will in the end get some results...

The Guiness at The Axe is indeed good.

The Scrumpy Jack however requires a little water added.

The main arms supply depot for USAF Fairford is RAF Welford in Berkshire about 20 mins south of Fairford.

On Saturday night 15 good folk came down from London and set up a Direct Action Camp close to the private entry/exit slip road that Welford has onto the M4 halfway between Junctions 13 and 14, with the intention of blockading the movements of bombs between Fairford and Welford.

On Sunday morning despite a heavy police presence at the site including police on horses the campers were all in good spirits even though the landowner was trying to run us over in his RangeRover..... Shocked

During Sunday afternoon a Section 44 was approved by the Home Office and during Sunday night 13 people were arrested on charges of conspiracy under the anti terrorist laws. These people were removed to unknown Police Stations and haven't been heard of since.

The Peace Camp at Gate10 is flying various flags.........one of them is a PALESTINIAN flag.

Soon after this PALESTINIAN flag was raised some gorilla from inside the base arrived with a furious message from the American Commander....

The message was........' Remove that IRAQI flag immediately'......

And yes..........that really did come from the American Commander.

I'm looking for a UN flag to hoist now if anyone knows where to get one.

A couple of the boys from Gate 10 have sent a message to the American Commander offering him basic lessons in vexillology with the idea that it might possibly reduce the ammount of friendly fire incidents.....

Kt.

KT,

Don't forget the BBC when all this sorts itself out. The BBC has continued to show longing, lingering, lustful shots of B52 bombers being loaded for massacre whilst ignoring entirely the existence of a peace camp at the base. KT, you people are really there, right? It's just you'd never know it by looking at British TV screens. The media has now lost any sense of shame in its reporting. Propaganda, falsehood, impaired memory - these are all the order of the new press.

Here are some names to mail in order to complain about the totally biased coverage offered by the media during this 'war.' A warning, some of these people have flashy job titles but manners straight from the gutter. Mail them, see for yourself.

Richard Sambrook, BBC director of news.

Steve Anderson, controller of ITV news:

Roger Alton, Observer editor

Simon Kelner, Independent editor

I've ignored the right wing press and Sky TV as we already knew which side of the razor wire fence these agencies would be playing.
