I wonder if Tony will maintain his stiff upprt lip or feel the need of a hug from Chirac and Schroeder. Beat me , whip me, make me write a hot check.

Blair has nobody to blame but himself. He is the vital pawn that has been manoeuvred into a strategically crucial position. Some fools thought he had influence over Bush. We heard a lot about this influence in the early days but not so much now. Go figure.

However, there has been much speculation in this country over the past few years regarding Tony 's departure date. I believe he is cynical enough to have an exit strategy well planned. And his replacement is already waiting to jump into the hot seat. Then we'll see Brown running to 'do the right thing' and negotiate the peace. The war will be over by that stage, of course. Brown will be a hero. British labour traditions will be reborn and the new Tony Blair will smile down from his throne. And all the people will live happily ever after.

AT,
If Blair went public and say asked for a 180 day period for inspections to work, then wouldm't he redeem himself in British eyes?

Count me in that category as I still believe UK support helps validates Bush's plans in American eyes and without UK support Bush would still be in there pitching. Blair can moderate him if he so chooses. Com'on , you guys needs some payback for Suez in '56.

He might but I don't think so. It would simply open the floodgates for his opponents to jump all over him and accuse him of a U-turn (an absolute no-no in British politics). He'd start getting support from the left wing of his party - a death sentence. The Tories might even gain a few votes by talking up a 'shattered' US/UK 'special relationship.' His days would be numbered as the next election closed in.

No, he's finished whatever happens.

We sent Jack Straw over yesterday! That means the talking has finished. Blair has lost. Everything. If he can slide his way out of this I'll vote for him next time.

Maybe not.
