| Hello Steff,
Good Afternoon. I never realised you knew so much about Africa. Some friends of ours went on Safari last year and fell in love with the Country.
They inspired my interest in the Country plus the tales my own Family have told me.
I am at the moment reading The Ukimwi Road by Dervla Murphy. will give you my opinion on this later.With regard to NEPAD what are you thoughts on the subject
I personally think that any aid given will some how, through various means, find its way to cash being deposited in the accounts of the leaders, and that those deserving it will see little of it.
Mbeki is on record as having stated that the blue print will make little or no diference to the country.
Would you agree that Zimbabwe is being seen as a test for Africa to improve Government and promote human rights.
Would you further agree that the deepening economic and political crisis is a powder keg waiting to explode.
Why in your opinion is Uncle Bob deliberately starving his peoples. and do you consider that Morgan Tsvangirai would be a good governor.

| Obviously you do know much more about Southern Africa than me. I only lived there for 33 years. At £1 for R16 I will wager that you do know it better than me. It is a pleasant place for the leisure classes. A five star holiday at a two star price. Bask in the Southern Suns in a climate of political freedom - just keep your eyes on the road and try to ignore the terrible poverty that surrounds your air conditioned 4X4. You will be happy to know that your holiday £ is a significant contribution to the foreign exchange of a country that once supplied over half of the free world's gold.
In between your various excursions did you bother to stop at any of the large hospitals where Aids patients double up two to a bed? Did you notice how busy the cemeteries are?
Did you take a walk unaccompanied through the CBD of Johannesburg? Or did you frequent the holes in the wall alone in the hours of darkness?
I prefer to remember the Southern Africa of my childhood and youth: Northern and Southern Rhodesia Swaziland and South Africa. A time of no Aids neglible crime and abundant wild life in a habitat still intact as nature meant it to be. The natives were well fed, healthy, and mostly content.
That is where the phrase "God's own Country" was first coined.
Today there is a colloquialism which was minted in Rhodesia. It goes "Come to Rhodesia and see the Zimbabwe Ruins. Go to Zimbabwe and see the Rhodesian Ruins. This applies to the whole of Southern Africa today.

This was the same law and order that saw blacks "falling" out of windows? This was the same law and order that said a black man will be hanged for killing a white but not vice versa? The same law and order that sent the army out into the townships to gun down unarmed women and children? Etc etc etc.

Seriously though I am not bitter. I would have to be SERIOUS to have that affliction. No I just enjoy the opportunity to point out to you bleeding heart liberals that you can all take a collective bow for the present state of Southern Africa.
Fair enough some political activists did take an unwarranted interest in practical ornithology. But for every one of them there must have been 20 black women who were rescued by the police from their drunken husbands who were both intent on, and armed for, murder. I witnessed several such occasions.
You only see what the TV shows you. And that is very often the only view of S.A. that you get. You only saw the SAP in their political oppressor role. You did not see them break up faction fights between hundreds of male hostel dwellers, neither did you see them rescue the referee from the football stadium when the crowd got ugly. You did not see them donate blood on the spot to save black casualties. Soweto on a Saturday night was about as violent as anywhere on earth.
The shootings and torture and murders that went on were not the whole story. The black lives that have been saved by the change of government are exceeded one hundred fold by the deaths from Aids, sickness, starvation and crime. And all you bleeding heart liberals, who brought about this change of government, have got all these deaths on your conscience. Apartheid was on its way out under de Klerck but you all couldn't wait a few years. You had to inflict your sense of fair play on a foreign country and get the instant exhaltation no matter what the long term effects might be.
And what about Bob in Zim? He is behaving in a manner ten times worse than the old S.A. government. And I am not just referring to the White farmers though that in itself is disgraceful. No I am referring to his massacre of his political rivals the Matabele. His blatant rigging of the elections. The murders, bannings, beatings of anyone who opposes him who is unprotected. What does Britain do? NOTHING!
I could go on and on but this is only an old 78 wind up gramaphone and I'm gettin tired of winding and sharpening needles so I will bid you all goodnight. I sincerely hope you do not dream of infant girls with blood on their clothes and screams on their lips. God bless them all and hold them close in his loving Care. Will discuss your reply later today, but I will say that some of the things you have stated, were virtually word for word those of a friend of our Family.
I would also add that some of the things he has mentioned are even worse.

That's the problem with old age, one's memory becomes muddled and cannot tell the difference between reality and fantasy. It also tends to forget all the bad and remembers only the good. Especially when you are a member of the elite, ruling class and the bad things did not affect one directly.
