Colin Powell??? Man or mouse?

Honourable or dishonourable?

Waiting in the wings or waiting for a bus?

He reminds me of Prescott, a man with beliefs but prepared to sacrifice them readily in exchange for power. If he survives in his present role it will only be due to a total sell-out. Didn't he have some kind of administrative role regarding a nasty incident from the Vietnam hall of shame? I'd start judging him from that point and work up - he must have greased a lot of paws and made a lot of compromises to get where he is today. As for him assuming the top job, I don't think American society is quite yet ready to ignore the colour of his skin.

I read his biography and am very confused as to whether he is now embarrassed by it or is too hypocritical to care what he wrote in that book.

In fact if you were to pull out quotes from his biography..its like the bible..so many good things to say...then immediately another to contradict what was said...

Amazed no one in States or Captiol Hill has brought him up on some of his interviews and speeches and asked him how they fit in with what he states in his biography...Lots of good things in there...Obviously intelligent guy and worked his way to top...Or been helped whatever...

Book reviews are good..heres another..Fits in with Old Colins...OK a military guy but so was Colin..Even if your not interested in military matters..lots in this guys thoughts from many years previous that fit in with todays special relationship between States and UK.

Forget Churchill this guy in my view was the one who kept him inline when it mattered...This guy is owed the debt for turning Churchills oft ramblings into practicalities...

Months leading up to D day are particularly interesting and few months after..pulls no punches on either our allied pre-medoner leaders and men of the moment or indeed our own..We owe this guy a big debt.

Alan brooke...War diaries...As big a book as Colin Powells..

Not really about the war as such..more about the polotics and personalities and how we differed as two nations with 2 different agendas..

One quote from him..reminds me of today maybe..."Just back from meeting with Winston..Thought at first there was going to be trouble with him over the US position..However in the end got him to agree to our outlook which was ..To Americans....If you insiist on being damned fools, sooner than falling out with you, which would be fatal to us both, we shall be damned fools with you, and we shall see that we perform the role of damned fools..damned well
Nothing changes then.
