| This is where you can post any membership lists or biographies relating to the men and women who really do hold and wield power - remembering that politicians are merely front men acting as an interface between human resources (you and I) and big business (the companies owned and operated by, guess who, the men and women that hold and wield real power). Starting with one of the most powerful organisations on this planet, the Council on Foreign Relations. Here's how these 'free thinkers' describe their exclusive club. | Quote: | Founded in 1921,the Council on Foreign Relations is a nonpartisan membership organization, research center, and publisher. It is dedicated to increasing America ’s understanding of the world and contributing ideas to U.S.foreign policy. The Council accomplishes this mainly by promoting constructive discussions and by publishing Foreign Affairs, the leading journal on global issues. The Council is host to the widest possible range of views, but an advocate of none, though its research fellows and Independent Task Forces do take policy stands. THE COUNCIL TAKES NO INSTITUTIONAL POSITION ON POLICY ISSUES AND HAS NO AFFILIATION WITH THE U.S.GOVERNMENT.A STATE- MENTS OF FACT AND EXPRESSIONS OF OPINION CONTAINED IN ALL ITS PUBLICATIONS ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE AUTHOR OR AUTHORS. | (I've corrected the spelling errors and bad layout free of charge). So now we have established the impartiality of this band of greats, lets see what they have to say in the opening paragraphs of their unbiased report on GM crops and foodstuffs. | Quote: | The United States and the European Union (EU)are edging ever closer to an outright trade dispute over genetically modified foods.Farmers in the United States and several other countries are devoting an increasing fraction of their fields to these crops because they are less costly to grow than conventional varieties. At the same time, however, many European governments have branded genet- ically modified foods unsafe for humans and dangerous to the environment —despite scientific analysis, though still incomplete, which strongly suggests that these fears are vastly overblown. | I can see we're going to have some fun with these guys. I suggest you all look into this organisation, you might be surprised what you find. Meanwhile - did you spot the picture of their good mate Salman Rushdie on their home page? | Hello All: I have to confess, I really didn't know a whole lot about GM foods and especially America's involvement in offering this..alternative? to other countries, without doing further studies on what sort of health risks it entails, or how the United States has pretty much cornered the market. So thanks, DP for educating me last night. :D Anyhoo.. I don't have a list of those companies..yet, I will do some searching, but, I found this article and there are E-mail addresses, for anyone who is interested, can forward on their concerns. | This is an interesting quote. What makes it interesting (too me) Is when it was said and by whom: | Quote: | | "I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. ... corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." -- U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 21, 1864 (letter to Col. William F. Elkins) Ref: "The Lincoln Encyclopedia", Archer H. Shaw (Macmillan, 1950, NY) | | | | | Libby | | Posted: Tue Jun 04, 2002 12:27 pm Post subject: |
| I know..I know..you wanted names and the corporations they run, but, I am trying to gain a better understanding myself of the effects in every aspect or our lives these corporations have..so, I am educationing myself in the process of obtaining those names. BTW..Hope Urls come out okay!! As the world starts to globalize, it is accompanied by criticism of the current forms of globalization, which are feared to be overly corporate-led. As corporations become larger and multinational, their influence and interests go further accordingly. Being able to influence and own most media companies, it is hard to be able to publicly debate the notions and ideals that corporations pursue. Some choices that corporations take to make profits can affect people all over the world. Sometimes fatally. The Rise of Corporations Today we know that corporations, for good or bad, are major influences on our lives. For example, of the 100 largest economies in the world, 51 are corporations while only 49 are countries. In this era of "globalization", marginalized people are becoming especially angry at the motives of multinational corporations, and corporate-led globalization is being met with increasing protest and resistance. How did corporations ever get such power in the first place? What was the impact of giving corporations the same right as individuals in 1886 in the United States? Click here to find out more. Corporations and Human Rights Large, transnational corporations are becoming increasingly powerful. As profits are naturally the most important goal, damaging results can arise, such as violation of human rights, lobbying for and participating in manipulated international agreements, environmental damage, child labor, driving towards cheaper and cheaper labor, and so on. Multinational corporations claim that their involvement in foreign countries is actually a constructive engagement as it can promote human rights in non-democratic nations. However, it seems that that is more of a convenient excuse to continue exploitative practices. Click here to find out more. Corporations and Medical Research Concern is rising at the priorities of medical research and pharmaceutical companies. There is concern that the profit motive has led to emphasis on research that is aimed more at things like baldness and impotence, rather than various tropical diseases that affect millions upon millions of people in developing countries. Unfortunately, while a large market therefore exists, because most of these people are poor and unable to afford treatments, the pharmaceutical companies develop products that can sell and hence target wealthier consumers. Click here to find out more. Pharmaceutical Companies and AIDS The AIDS crisis is one example that highlights the motives of some of the larger pharmaceutical corporations. When South Africa wanted to try and produce cheaper drugs to help its own people, by producing more generic and cheaper drugs, these companies actually lobbied the US government to impose sanctions on them! Click here to find out more. Evasion of Responsibilities and Dues Through corporate crime, tax havens, transfer pricing and many other policies, both legal and illegal, billions of dollars are avoided from being taxed. The much needed money would helped developing (and developed) countries provide important social programs for their populations. Usually, these crimes, which often have far worse effects than individual crimes, go unaccounted. Click here to find out more. Corporations and the Environment Many industries such as the enegry and fossil fuels industry leave many environmental problems in their wake. Because international lending schemes are tied with "reforms"s; that include cutting back on regulatory and safety measures such as health, education and the environment, problems can arise without many resources available to deal with them. While large corporations are able to profit, the costs from environmental and other damage has to be borne by the local population. Click here to find out more. Corporate Influence on Children When companies see children as an enormous market with incredible purchasing power, it leads to a lot of advertising and marketing targeted directly at them. Some are concerned at the effect it has as children, teaching them to be consumers and overly conscious about materialistic things, perhaps even at the expense of human qualities from an early age. Click here to find out more. Corporations and Worker Rights For many companies, the largest cost is often the work force. Hence, where profits are the bottom line, it is only natural for companies to seek out the cheapest labor possible. However, when international agreements are often designed to foster an environment where cheaper and cheaper labor is promoted, the workers themselves are often not paid enough to live on. When a nation tries to provide regulatory steps to improve workers conditions (which does mean more costs to the companies), multinational corporations naturally pick up and go to other places where there are less measures in place. In this way, improving working conditions will always be difficult, as it is not in the interest of the large companies. Click here to find out more. Influence at the WTO Transnational corporations are able to exert enormous influence in no less a powerful body as the World Trade Organization (WTO). These corporations are closely linked to the WTO decision-makers themselves. Click here to find out more. Corporate Power Facts and Stats As transnational corporations grow in size and power, their influence and impacts affect more and more people. These stats provide an insight into the growing size and influence of corporations. Click here to find out more. | | | | Libby | | Posted: Tue Jun 04, 2002 1:03 pm Post subject: |
| | Quote: | | I know..I know..you wanted names and the corporations they run, | So, I'll start with this one: BECHTEL VS. BOLIVIA Riley Bechtel is the 51st most wealthy man in the U.S.* He heads one of the most powerful corporations in the world. He is also providing, to the press and public, deliberately false and misleading information about the suffering his company created for the people of Bolivia. (* Source: Forbes Magazine) For the poorest people in Cochabamba [water] rates went up little, barely 10 percent. - Gail Apps, spokeswoman for Riley Bechtel January 3, 2002 e-mail to the public and the media In February 2000, just months after it took over control of the water system of Bolivia’s third largest city, Cochabamba, a Bechtel subsidiary hit water users with enormous price increases. These increases forced some of the poorest families in South America to literally choose between food or water. A popular uprising against the company, repressed violently by government troops, left one 17 year old boy dead and more than a hundred people wounded. In April 2000 Bechtel was finally forced to leave. In November 2001 Bechtel decided to add to the suffering it had already caused by filing a legal demand for $25 million against the Bolivian people – compensation for its lost opportunity to make future profits. In response, The Democracy Center and more than 100 people from all over the world wrote directly to Bechtel CEO, Riley Bechtel, calling on him to drop his action against Bolivia. Mr. Bechtel responded to those messages with a statement from his public relations staff with documentably false and misleading statements about the price hikes his company imposed on the people of Cochabamba. Bechtel’s falsification of the facts can’t be allowed to stand. Here, for public review, are the actual documents and detailed numbers that demonstrate that Bechtel is lying to the public and media. We urge people to write directly to Mr. Bechtel via e-mail, to let him know that his company must stop both its falsifications and its unconscionable legal demands against Bolivia’s poor. THE DEMOCRACY CENTER’S LETTER TO RILEY BECHTEL: On December 18, 2001 Democracy Center executive director, Jim Shultz, wrote directly to Bechtel CEO, Riley Bechtel, calling on him to drop his company’s legal action against the people of Bolivia RILEY BECHTEL’S RESPONSE: After receiving more than 100 e-mails from all over the world calling on Bechtel to drop its legal action against Bolivia, Mr. Bechtel directed his public relations spokeswoman, Gail Apps, to respond making documentably false and misleading claims about Bechtel’s water price hikes. THE DEMOCRACY CENTER’S RESPONSE TO RILEY BECHTEL: In January 2002 The Democracy Center wrote back to Riley Bechtel, responding point by point to Bechtel’s falsehoods. COCHABAMBA’S WATER BILLS FROM BECHTEL: The direct proof of Bechtel’s continued mistruths about what it did in Bolivia – viewable copies of the water bills with Bechtel’s increases and a chart of the water rate hikes drawn directly from the water company’s computers. BECHTEL’S LEGAL ACTION AGAINST BOLIVIA: A brief summary and explanation of Bechtel’s legal demand filed with the arbitration arm of the World Bank (ICSID) THE BOLIVIAN WATER REVOLT: The Democracy Center’s complete dispatches from the Cochabamba water revolt, winner of the 2000 Project Censored award for top story. | Hmmm..Brothers? I think so, but still, the name Bechtel has been around a long time. Bechtel Group 50 Beale Street San Francisco CA 94105 415-768-1234 Bechtel Inc. Box467 Mentang Raya 8 Jakarta, Indonesia Bechtel is a family-owned company and one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the U.S. According to Owen's World Trade: Africa and Asia Business Directory (1985), Bechtel is a logging contractor. According to Jim Riccio, a nuclear policy analyst at the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, Bechtel has no capability to engage in trade and commerce. Details can be found in Riccio's article - "Incompetence, Wheeling and Dealing: the Real Bechtel" - published in the Multinational Monitor magazine's October 1989 issue. Warren A. Bechtel founded the W.A. Bechtel Company in 1906 focusing on the manufacture of railways and later on road making. Warren Bechtel died in 1933 and was succeeded by Stephen D. Bechtel, one of his three sons. While Warren Bechtel fortified the name of Bechtel Corporation with his astute business sense, Stephen relied on political connections to further the company's interests. Bechtel's dubious operations were noticed when a reporter, Mark Dowie, ran an expose in Mother Jones magazine in 1978 and then in the Multinational Monitor in 1984. Dowie and his associates exposed the connections between Bechtel and U.S. Government officials. During World War II, Bechtel engaged in shipbuilding. Bechtel and one John McCone, (who presently works for the Atomic Energy Commission and the CIA) made a killing during those years as they raked in more than $100 million in profits from an initial capital of $400,000. This got the attention of congressional investigators who were at the time running a congressional hearing on war profiteering. According to Ralph Casey of the General Accounting Office, "at no time in the history of American business, whether in wartime or in peacetime, have so many men made so much money with so little risk, and all at the expense of the taxpayers, not only of this generation but of generations to come." Bechtel built the following: Pilgrim Nuclear Plant in Massachusetts; Susquehana Steam Electric Plant in Pennsylvania; Midland and Palisades Nuclear plants in Michigan; Davis-Besse Nuclear Plant in Ohio; and San Onofre and Rancho Seco Nuclear plants in California. All of these, whether operational or not, have been idle for long periods of time due to the incompetence of Bechtel. Although Bechtel did not build the ill-fated Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear plant, their involvement in cleanup operations aggravated the situation. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) Office of Investigations found out that it was Bechtel's idea not to repair certain parts of the TMI plant by improperly classifying them as "not important to safety" to deliberately circumvent safety control regulations. When employees like Senior Start-up Engineer Richard Parks complained that Bechtel and TMI were deliberately circumventing safety procedures, they were harassed and intimidated. In 1985, Bechtel and TMI were fined by NRC for these abuses. When the nuclear construction market in the U.S. waned, Bechtel shifted its interests overseas. In articles published in Mother Jones and Multinational Monitor it was described how Bechtel used Korean operatives to bribe officials of the Korean Electric Company. This was in exchange for juicy contracts to build nuclear power plants in Korea. In 1970, Henry Kearns put Stephen Bechtel Sr. on the Advisory Board of the Export-Import Bank. At the time, the Ex-Im Bank gave loans to countries who in turn used these to finance projects connected to Bechtel. >From 1970 to 1973, according to Laton McCartney the breakdown was: $160 million for oil refineries and pipelines in Indonesia; $13.5 million for nickel production facilities in the Philippines; $107 million for a nuclear plant in Brazil; $100 million for pipelines in Egypt; $145 million for a fertilizer plant and $294 million liquid natural gas facilities in Algeria. After the term of Stephen Bechtel Sr. on the Advisory Board, Wisconsin Congressman Les Aspin accused him of being "guilty of numerous conflicts of interest". Rep. Aspen told the Washington Post that it was plain to see that Bechtel's companies gained much while Stephen Bechtel, Sr. was on the Advisory Board and even after he left. Rep. Aspin added that the project in Algeria could not have pushed through without the loan from the Ex-Im Bank. He points out the loan is a product of an apparent conflict of interest. From the book: Friends in High Places; The Bechtel Story: The most Secret Corporation and How it Engineered the World by Laton McCartney No other private company in modern history has a more intimate relationships with the U.S. Federal Government than Bechtel. During the Reagan era, the firm produced a Secretary of State (George Schultz), a Defense Secretery (Caspar Weinberger) and a Deputy Secretary of Energy (Kenneth Davis). Other former Bechtel associates were former EX-IM Bank head John Moore, and former CIA Director Richard Helms. There are many success questionable stories attributable to Bechtel, but according to McCartney, Bechtel also has a history of sexism, racism and anti-semitism. He says that in 1979, Bechtel was involved in a sex discrimination suit involving around 6,400 women--almost 80% of the women working in their San Francisco office. This suit involved an amount of around $1.3 million. A discrimination case involving 1,000 black workers was settled in 1978 to the sum of $700,000. MacCartney added that Bechtel was used by the CIA and has close relations with Libyan terrorist leader Mohammar Qadaffi. McCartney also stresses that it had something to do with the Syrian coup in 1949 and the Iranian Coup in 1953. In Libya, CIA agents used Bechtel as their cover between 1963 and 1970. Furthermore, according to McCarntey, Bechtel has a long history of bribing foreign officials especially in the Middle East. In one case, a Saudi prince received $200 million from company executives, according to the book. McCarntey's book was the subject of a campaign by Bechtel which aimed to prevent people from believing it as well as efforts by the company's lawyers to have the book re-written. For example: in the original manuscript, McCartney wrote Bechtel "had generated revenues that would help finance the terrorism of Muhammar Qadaffi." The final version read:" Bechtel's creations inadvertently had generated the revenues that would help finance the regime of Muhammar Qadaffi." Bechtel does not deny that they have good working relations with important people but this according to them is just 'networking'. Based on the standards of McCartney or even Bechtel, this `networking' has unequalled dimensions. | | | | FoxtrotAlpha | | Posted: Tue Jun 04, 2002 3:40 pm Post subject: |
