N.J. governor admits gay affair, resigns

TRENTON, N.J. — Gov. James McGreevey of New Jersey announced Thursday he had had an affair with another man and would resign Nov. 15, a year before he was to have run for re-election.
In a somber and stunning announcement made in the presence of his wife and parents, the Democratic governor said his decision to step down from office was prompted by the conclusion that disclosure of the affair would impair his ability to govern.
With his wife, Dina, and father, Jack, by his side, Gov. James McGreevey announces his resignation Thursday.
Man has threatened lawsuit
Aides to the 47-year-old governor said the affair was with a former aide, Golan Cipel, who was originally hired by the governor as an adviser to the state Office of Homeland Security. In 2002 Cipel was named counselor to the governor at a salary that rose to $110,000.
The aides said Cipel had threatened to file a lawsuit accusing the governor of sexual harassment.
A federal law enforcement official said McGreevey's office had called the FBI on Thursday and complained that Cipel had requested $5 million to quash the lawsuit, which they saw as extortion.
The aides said the threat of a lawsuit set off agonizing days for the governor and some of his top aides, ending Thursday with McGreevey's dramatic nationally televised announcement from his oak-paneled office in the Statehouse, with his wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, by his side.
He reflected on a life of tortured identity.
"My truth is that I am a gay American," the governor said, his voice thick with emotion and occasionally quavering as he read a statement.
McGreevey himself provided no details about the man, including his identity. The governor said he had engaged in the adult consensual affair with another man "shamefully," saying it "violates my bonds of matrimony." He also said, "I ask the forgiveness and grace of my wife."
"It was wrong," he said. "It was foolish. It was inexcusable."
"Given the circumstances surrounding the affair and its likely impact upon my family and my ability to govern, I have decided the right course of action is to resign."
The announcement threw New Jersey's political leadership into confusion.
Under state law, McGreevey, upon his resignation, will be succeeded by state Senate President Richard Codey, also a Democrat, who will retain his Senate post. New Jersey has no lieutenant governor. The state constitution requires a special election only if a governor leaves office less than 60 days before the next scheduled election, which this year is Nov. 2.
Some Republicans called for McGreevey to step down immediately, raising the possibility that he might not last until the Nov. 15 date.
Codey spent much of the day at a hospital in Livingston, where his wife was undergoing surgery. As he left his house in West Orange, he said, "New Jersey will be in good hands."
McGreevey's dramatic statement came after hours of desperate strategizing.
Many Democrats want U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine to step in and run for governor next year. Corzine said in a statement that "any speculation about my own political plans in light of the governor's decision is entirely premature."
Without elaborating, McGreevey said, "I realize the fact that this affair and my own sexuality, if kept secret, would leave me and, most important, the governor's office, vulnerable to rumors, false allegations and threats of disclosure."
Republican leaders expressed sadness and declined to discuss Codey's accession or the 2005 election. But the chairman of the Republican State Committee, Sen. Joseph Kyrillos Jr., said in a statement that the governor "should resign now because he can no longer effectively govern the state."
Rumors about McGreevey's relationship with Cipel had rippled through political circles for two years, but they waned with Cipel's departure. More recently, McGreevey's problems were strictly political. Look at this truth distorting Zionist Jew 'PSCM' trying to insinuate that the governor's gay lover (Golan Cibel) isn't an Israeli.. It was announced on CNN (surprisingly) yesterday that he is... It just shows how the Pro-Israel biased New York Times (which is owned and managed by Zionist Jews) doesn't convey that though.. Just as the New York Times and the New York Daily News (New York Daily News is owned by another Zionist Jew/Israel firster in Mort Zuckerman who also owns the US News and World Report publication as well ) did not run the letter (which is shown on page 100 of James Bamford's new book: 'A Pretext for War') by the guy who attacked the World Trade Center in 1993 (as the letter conveyed that it was US support for Israel's brutal oppression of the Palestinians that motivated the attack and that more attacks on Americans on US soil would come if the policy supporting Israel was not changed by the US ZOG - Zionist Occupied Government). If the ZOG had addressed that warning and if the New York Times and New York Daily News had published the letter, Americans could have pressured the ZOG to change its policy for Israel as such could have possibly prevented the tragic World Trade Center attack on September 11th, 2001 (which also happened because of US support for Israel's brutal oppression of the Palestinians as conveyed by James Bamford on pages 138-145 of 'A Pretext for War' and in the third edition of former Republican Congressman Paul Findley's 'They Dare to Speak Out' book as well).
The above conveys why Zionist (Israel firster) Jews should not have so much control/influence on the US government and media... It will be the downfall of the USA if Americans don't wake up to it..
