Chirac warns US against unilateral attack on Iraq
PARIS, Jan 19 (Reuters) - French President Jacques Chirac said in an interview released on Sunday that any unilateral U.S. attack on Iraq without U.N. backing would isolate Washington from the international community."If the United States decide to intervene alone, we will have to say that that will happen outside of the international community," Chirac told the daily Le Figaro newspaper, due to publish the interview on Monday.He said any attack on Iraq would not be legitimate unless it was based on a decision by the U.N. Security Council and that could be taken only on the basis of a report by U.N. arms inspectors now searching Iraq.Chirac said France wanted Iraq disarmed of any weapons of mass destruction and urged Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to cooperate with U.N. arms inspectors.Washington has pressed the inspectors to be more aggressive in seeking evidence of Iraqi weapons programmes, but Chirac said it was not up to outsiders to decide whether the inspectors were able to do their jobs."One may doubt the (Iraqi) cooperation is sufficient and may wish it to be more active, which is what I do," he said. "But it's up to the inspectors to judge if they are able to carry out their mission, not up to this or that country."Chief U.N. arms inspector Hans Blix arrived in Baghdad on Sunday demanding that Iraq stop dragging its feet and volunteer evidence on weapons programmes to avoid the threat of war.FRANCE HOLDS U.N. VETOFrance, one of the five veto-wielding permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, has urged Washington throughout the Iraq crisis to work through the U.N. in dealing with Baghdad.Chirac argued war was not inevitable, saying: "It is always an admission of defeat, the worst possible solution."He declined to say whether he thought U.S. President George W. Bush would order a unilateral attack against Iraq."I have a lot of esteem for the American president. I'm sure he will consider all the consequences of such a gesture," Chirac said.Chirac said British Prime Minister Tony Blair's support for Washington's Iraq strategy did not strengthen European cooperation."But, well, everyone has his own characteristics," said Chirac. "By tradition, the English have always kept an eye out towards the wide open sea and their American cousins."Chirac said a war in Iraq "would have possibly very serious human consequences, political consequences that are hard to control, economic consequences and a considerable cost".He cited a war cost estimate of 100 billion dollars."When you think we are not able, for example, to provide necessary medicines to poor countries to fight against epidemics, you ask yourself if all this is reasonable," he said. |

On October 1 of last year, I sent out the following e-mail. I don't have the time to sort out which of you were on my list at that time, so please bear with me if you've seen this already:
Iraq invasion plan written in September 2000 -- BEFORE Bush was "elected"
Bush's new 'global domination' policy is based almost verbatim on a policy written up by PNAC (Project for a New American Century) as found on http://www.newamericancentury.org
It's available for download (for now) and includes all the Bush administration's newly adopted military stances (preemptive strikes, military presence in the Gulf, antiterrorist philosophies, American global domination, etc.).
It should be required reading for all Americans, as well as anyone who believes that Bush is only acting in response to 9/11.

One revealing quote is:

Looks like they got their wish. The group was formed in 1997 as a response to Clinton's second term, and the membership list reads like a who's who of the Right Wing:

It includes security advisors going back to Nixon, characters from Iran-Contra, the so-called drug wars, Christian Values groups, Jewish and Israeli lobbyists (not to mention Christian and Jewish coalition groups), and 'Family Value' zealots who led the charge against Clinton during the Lewinsky debacle.
It features the heads of Lockheed, Boeing, and other military suppliers and contractors. Also included are senior editors of the major right-leaning publications, as well as current staffers of the Bush administration (including Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and convicted Iran-Contra felon Elliott Abrams).
Amazingly, it also boasts the membership of Jeb Bush, NOT his simpleton 'fool me once' brother -- guess that explains the recent events in Florida (including the theft of the 2000 election in the first place). Also featured is Zalmay Khalilzad who was a paid spokesman for UNOCAL, was pivotal in setting up meetings with the Taliban, and who later gave testimony that Afghanistan needed to be 'converted' into a more US-friendly (read: oil) environment in hearings in March 2000. His supervisor at one point was Condoleeza Rice!
These are the people pulling Bush's strings. And BTW - the guys who were supposed responsible for the lax security on 9/11 (i.e., the 'acting' head of the CIA) are also prominently featured.

(EIRNS) - One of the "Mega" agencies that mobilized to quash the Fox TV pick-up of our Israeli spy scandal was JINSA, the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs. JINSA President and CEO David Steinmann is also a director of CAMERA (Committee for Accurate Middle East Reporting in America), the group that actually staged the e-mail, fax, letter, and phone call mobilization that squeezed Fox TV, to the point that they removed the transcripts of the four Carl Cameron segments from their own web site. While CAMERA lists Tom Lantos among its advisors, along with Sharon cabinet minister Natan Sharansky, it is JINSA that is the real hotbed of "Mega" and "X Committee" clout, particular inside the Pentagon. On its own website, JINSA boasts that "Only one think tank puts the U.S.-Israel strategic relationship {first} -- JINSA!" JINSA lists among its directors: Richard Perle, Steven Bryen (whose wife, Shoshana Bryen is still one of the few full-time JINSA employees), Max Kampelman, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Jack Kemp, Michael Ledeen, Joshua Muravchik, Kenneth Timmermann, and James Woolsey. Beyond these hardcore "X Committee" operatives, JINSA's board also includes a dozen or more retired flag grade U.S. military officers, including Lt. Gen. Anthony Burshnick (USAF), Gen. Crosbie Saint (USA), Maj. Gen. Lee Downer (USAF), Adm. Leon Edney (USN), Gen. John Foss (USA), Adm. David Jeremiah (USN), Adm. Jerome Johnson (USN), Maj. Gen. Jarvis Lynch (USMC), Rear Adm. Sumner Shapiro (USN). JINSA makes no bones about the fact that it is recruiting an Israeli fifth column inside the U.S. military command. JINSA's output of policy papers and press releases also makes clear that they are leading proponents of the "Clash of Civilizations," and the drive to lure the U.S. into a suicidal military alliance with an Israeli marcher lord state. Typical of JINSA's operations of late are their sponsorship of a series of lectures by Iraqi National Congress honcho Chulabi, and their Sept. 13 press statement, calling for the U.S. to "go beyond bin Laden" to launch military attacks against Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Syria, Sudan, the Palestinian Authority, Libya, Algeria, "and even our presumed friends Saudi Arabia and Egypt."
