Sharon faces coup by his own party

DISCUSSIONS are going on inside Likud, Israel’s largest party, about
replacing Ariel Sharon, the prime minister, with Benjamin Netanyahu, his
foreign minister, to avoid losing the general election at the end of this
month.
Sharon’s colleagues are alarmed at the way Likud is losing support in the
opinion polls and some have already had enough. “If by next weekend the
losing trend continues, we’ll have no choice but to change horses in
midstream and put in Bibi (Netanyahu) to bring victory,” one minister said.
Instead of easing into a second term as had been expected, Sharon is
fighting for his political survival after being hit by a series of sleaze
allegations. The former general, who had hoped an avuncular image would help
him win the day, became so angry in a televised address last week that he
was pulled off the air by a judge, who said he had broken election rules by
lashing out at his accusers.
Any attempt to ditch Sharon would be strongly resisted, however. “The battle
of his life!” screamed one headline in the Israeli press on Friday. Sharon’s
close friends said there was “no chance” he would resign. “Never in a
thousand years,” said one.
The pressure nevertheless continues to build. Two leading columnists in
Israel called upon Sharon to reconsider his position. “Resign now and save
your face,” wrote one, while another demanded a “chance for a fresh start in
both security and the economy”.
Ministers have spoken of suggesting the idea of resignation to Sharon, 74,
in the privacy of his farm in the Negev desert.
The polls make grim reading. They show that most voters believe he is
corrupt, and that few are happy with his performance as prime minister. The
number of seats Likud could expect to gain in the Knesset has fallen from 41
to 27. More ominously, the polls continue to get worse.
Analysts say a Labour victory, scarcely imaginable before Christmas, can no
longer be ruled out.
Amram Mitzna, a former general who leads the Labour party, advocates talks
with the Palestinians. His supporters drew encouragement from the
announcement by Jack Straw, the British foreign secretary, that a conference
on Palestinian reform will go ahead in London this week, despite Sharon’s
refusal to let delegates travel there from the West Bank and Gaza. (They
will instead take part through video links.)
Sharon may care to reflect on recent Israeli political history. When Ehud
Barak, the former Labour leader, was losing support to Likud and Sharon
before the last general election two years ago, and Labour ministers put
pressure on him to let the veteran Shimon Peres take his place, he refused.
Barak subsequently lost to Sharon.
“We wouldn’t like to make the same mistake as Labour by not replacing a
losing horse,” said one minister involved in the delicate behind-the-scenes
manoeuvring.
The corruption charges levelled at Sharon concern his younger son, Gilad,
who is alleged to have received a £1m loan from a family friend, Cyril Kern,
a former London-based businessman now living in South Africa.
The loan, which, if made, should have been cleared by the state ombudsman,
was supposedly to cover a family debt incurred through illegal campaign
contributions during a previous election.
Sharon insists he knows nothing about the loan but 87% of Israelis polled
say they do not believe him.
The prime minister has responded in characteristically robust style. He has
used the internal security service, Shin Bet, to trace the source of the
loan leak to the press.

That would be right in accordance with the radical/extremist JINSA (Jewish Institute of National Security Affairs) Zionist agenda of Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz.. Perle has been an advisor to Netanyahu, and that extremist JINSA agenda (which Perle and Wolfowitz follow) calls for all of Palestine to become Israel as I am obviously referring to the West Bank and Gaza here... This is another reason that these JINSA Zionist extremists in the Bush regime have wanted to initiate the attack on Iraq for years (in order to give Israel the opportunity to "transfer"/ethnically cleanse the Palestinians from the occupied territories into neighboring Jordan).
However, with the potential of the Labour party candidate (General Mitsna if I am spelling his name correctly here) winning the upcoming election, the "transfer" (ethnic cleansing) of the Palestinians (which the extremist JINSA Zionists in the Bush regime like Perle and Wolfowitz along with their Likud cronies in Israel such as Netanyahu would like to see manifest when the invasion of Iraq gets underway) can not really happen in the coming invasion of Iraq because General Mitsna's position is for the Israelis to pull out of the Palestinian territories (in order to create a Palestinian state there).. This is a very serious situation for the Palestinians and for acheiving peace in the Middle East if this Likud leadership change (to Netanyahu who is even more extreme than Sharon) takes place before the election:
