| Fake Al-Qaeda cell busted in Gaza

GAZA CITY, 8 December 2002 ? Palestinian security forces have arrested a group of Palestinians for collaborating with Israel and posing as operatives of Osama Bin Laden?s Al-Qaeda terrorist network, a senior official said yesterday.
The Palestinian Authority said Israel?s Mossad spy agency has set up a fake Al-Qaeda cell in Gaza so that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon could justify Israeli attacks in Palestinian areas.
The arrests come two days after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon charged Al-Qaeda militants were operating in Gaza and in Lebanon.
?The Palestinian Authority arrested a group of collaborators who confessed they were working for Israel, posing as Al-Qaeda operatives in the Palestinian territories,? said the official, on condition of anonymity. He said the alleged collaborators sought to ?discredit the Palestinian people, justify every Israeli crime and provide reasons to carry out a new (military) aggression in the Gaza Strip.?
?It is a big, big, big lie to cover (Sharon?s) attacks and his crimes against our people everywhere,? Palestinian President Yasser Arafat told reporters at his headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Arafat termed Israeli claim of Al-Qaeda in Gaza presence ridiculous.
Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo pointed to an Israeli plot. ?There are certain elements who were instructed by the Mossad to form a cell under the name of Al-Qaeda in the Gaza Strip in order to justify the assault and the military campaigns of the Israeli occupation army against Gaza,? Abed Rabbo said.
Earlier, International Cooperation Minister Nabil Shaath announced he would hold a press conference here at 2 p.m. (1200 GMT) on the alleged presence of Al-Qaeda operatives in the Gaza Strip.
Sharon?s claim about the presence of Al-Qaeda in Gaza was considered a surprise because Gaza Strip is virtually sealed off by Israeli troops.
The Israeli leader also charged other members of the terror group were cooperating with Lebanon?s Hezbollah.
The Palestinians slammed the allegation as ?totally absurd? and accused Sharon of trying to piggyback on the US-led ?war against terrorism? to strengthen his military operations against militants in the territories.
In what Israel called a raid to capture a wanted Palestinian, Israeli troops backed by tanks and helicopter gunships swept into the Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on Friday, sparking a gunbattle and killing 10 people.
In New York, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan issued a statement demanding Israel exercise restraint and ?refrain from the excessive and disproportionate use of deadly force in civilian areas?.
US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher declined to comment on the incident but said Washington has been concerned over civilian casualties that have resulted from Israeli military operations.

A Palestinian citizen from Gaza has revealed how the Israeli intelligence
Service, the Mossad, had been trying to enlist him to set up a terrorist cell in
Palestine under the name of al-Qaida, the group headed by Osama bin Laden.
Ibrahim (not his real name) said during a news conference in Gaza Monday night
that he had been contacted by a man who identified himself as Haj Yousuf from
the city of Akka, who told him that he was working for Osama Bin Laden and that
he was able to carry out bombings in Tel Aviv and Haifa and other Israeli towns.
He told me that all he wanted from me was to declare responsibility for the
bombings in the name of al-Qaida, said the masked Ibrahim.
He spoke very nicely and told me he would help me financially; then he asked me
to try to enlist a number of sincere Islamic-minded youths to set up al-Qaida
cell in Gaza.
Ibrahim said his contacts with Haj Yousuf (the Mossad agents) became more
frequent, adding that at one point the Mossad agent offered him a monthly salary
of up to 3000 US dollars.
At a later date, the Mossad agent asked Ibrahim to rent an apartment in Gaza in
order to facilitate communications between them. He also promised to provide
Ibrahim with a computer and fax machine, saying that communication between the
two would be conducted via the internet.
Ibrahim said the man would inject his telephone conversations with a lot of
Quranic verses and would exhort him to perform daily prayers, particularly the
Dawn prayer.
However, Ibrahim, said he began to be suspicious of the man when he told him
that he knew him and his family.
Every thing he told me made me suspect his true identity. He told me he knew me,
my home, my friends; he also told me to expect a visit to my home or place of
work.
Ibrahim said his contacts with Haj Yousuf lasted for five months after which he
decided to inform the Preventive Security Force in Gaza of the entire affair.
The Israeli government and media have been dumbfounded by the revelation.
A spokesman at the Israeli Prime Ministers office issued a terse statement on
Tuesday describing these allegations as nonsense.
Earlier, a gleeful-looking Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told reporters
that Israel had discovered an al Qaida cell in Gaza and that Israel was a key
partner in the worldwide war against terror.
The Israeli claims were instantly and vehemently denied by the Palestinian
Authority whose leader Yasser Arafat labeled Sharons remarks as a big, big, big
lie.
Moreover, the PA briefed the US, EU, Russia and the UN on the affair and urged
them to be mindful of Israeli designs to carry out massacres and acts of wanton
killings in the Gaza Strip under the false rubric of fighting al-Qaida.

Interview with a Plotter
A 9/11 confession.
Sitting on the floor of his Karachi apartment, Ramzi bin al-Shieb laid out in stunning detail the anatomy of the 9/11 attacks. As one of the masterminds of September 11, he had a lot to share. Talking this June with a reporter from al-Jazeera — the Arab-language network of choice for Qaeda terrorists — bin al-Shieb discussed everything from the "conquests and heroism of Islam" to America's support for Israel, in addition, of course, to the particulars of 9/11. And what he laid out — something not covered in-depth in the American press until now — can be read in full in the issue of National Review hitting newsstands today.
With close ties to both Mohammed Atta, the ringleader of the 9/11 hijackers, and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, believed to be the new operational leader of al Qaeda, bin al Shieb has emerged as a central figure in the September 11 attacks. But because he couldn't get a visa in any of his four attempts — two in Germany, two in his native Yemen, but none in Saudi Arabia — he reverted to the role of primary coordinator and paymaster. Acting as the middleman between Atta in America and Mohammed in Afghanistan, bin al Shieb — who was in Germany until September 5, 2001 — was in a unique position with full knowledge of al Qaeda's activities in the United States, Afghanistan, and around the world.
In the interview, there's a lot of what one might expect — religious fervor, hatred of America and Israel, and vague threats of future attacks — but bin al Shieb's statement, on the whole, provides insight into the inner workings of the planning and execution of a terrorist attack. Bouncing around from topic to topic without any distinct thought process, he nonetheless spells out — in chilling detail — the preparations for the attacks, including how the date was selected and how the hijackers selected their seats on the doomed flights, and the manner in which the hijackings were carried out.
Although most of what he says is in line with the publicly available record, bin al Shieb does make some claims that contradict previous reports. He says at one point that "all those brothers were aware of the fact that they were going to carry out martyrdom operations, ...and they were not too bothered about the details."
Bin al shieb also claims that Marwan al-Shehhi (pilot of the flight that crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center) and Zyad Jarrah (pilot of Flight 93, which crashed in a Pennsylvania field) were tailed by "American intelligence officers" when they were making dry runs on flights from New York to California. If true, that would mean that two other 9/11 terrorists — besides Nawaf al Hamzi and Khalid al Mihdhar — were under the FBI's watchful eye before September. But it is clear that most of the terrorists' activities were not.
The 9/11 coordinator was alive to tell the tale to the reporter because he couldn't get a visa to join his comrades in the United States — although he is no position to speak with reporters today, because he was arrested by Pakistani police in his Karachi apartment on the anniversary of 9/11. Likely based in large part on bin al Shieb's difficulties obtaining a visa in Germany and Yemen, al Qaeda decided to recruit all but one of the non-pilots from a country that did not "hassle" visa applicants. It was hardly coincidental that the 14 9/11 terrorists who came to the United States between April 2001 and July 2001 arrived from the country where the State Department provided an open door: Saudi Arabia.
Ramzi bin al-Shibh certainly knew the importance of easy visas: "The remaining 14 brothers [from Saudi Arabia] entered without any hindrances or problems, thank Allah."

Israel Targets … New Zealand?
NZ cops lifted up a rock – and look what skittered out!

What's up with Israel's preoccupation with wheelchair-bound paraplegics? First, they offed Sheikh Yassin, the blind paraplegic known as the spiritual mentor of Hamas, with a few well-aimed shots from an Israeli helicopter gunship. Now the news out of New Zealand is that Israeli spies used yet another wheelchair-bound paraplegic to illegally procure a passport in his name for their own purposes.
Two of the spies have been caught red-handed, and arrested, while one has fled the country and police are still looking for a fourth Israeli who is believed to be still at large. While not admitting that the four are spies – but not denying it, either – New Zealand's Prime Minister, Helen Clark, is furious, and has vowed "a strong and public response once the court action has concluded."
What in heck is going on in New Zealand?
According to the New Zealand Herald, the police set a trap for the Mossad spooks when officials became suspicious about this particular passport application, and, noting an irregularity, contacted the alleged applicant – who turned out to be not only wheelchair-bound but also in residential care. He wasn't going anywhere.
According to officials, the man who made the phony application was one Zev William Barkan, who had an American or a Canadian accent. He claimed to be going to Australia to get married, and was therefore in a hurry.
The police were informed, and the trap was baited. Barkan left the country, and arranged to have the passport picked up by his two friends, Eli Cara and Uriel Zoshe Kelman. Someone contacted the passport office on March 23 but would not pick up the passport in person.
Instead, it was to be sent to a company, Travcour, that is in the business of procuring visas and other travel documents. Later, Travcour was contacted by someone who told them to deliver the passport to an address in St. Paul, Auckland. The landlord at the address told police that he had been in contact with a former tenant, who said he was expecting a package, and that he would send a taxi to pick it up.
When the taxi approached, Cara, who was sitting in a nearby café, keeping a close watch on the proceedings, followed the taxi driver into the building. The police soon swooped down on Cara, and in the process caught his accomplice, Kelman, who was waiting to pick up the package: he tried to walk away, and hid his cell phone in some bushes, but the cops got him, too.
The Herald reports:
"Neither Cara nor Kelman had an explanation for why they were involved in wanting to obtain the New Zealand passport, nor did they say what their involvement was. They also claimed they did not know each other. Another police witness, Michael Zandvoort, said Kelman, whom he knew as John, told him he had a contract in Europe and would be away for two months, 'something to do with West European embassies'.
'John never told me specifics about the company he worked for but it was something to do with security and detecting bugs.'"
The Sydney travel agency Cara claimed to operate turned out to be nonexistent, and he had no explanation for his involvement in trying to get the passport. Kelman's story was likewise unconvincing. Read this fascinating transcript to see how two Mossad spies, caught doing their dirty work in an ostensibly friendly country, stood up under police interrogation. My favorite part:
Cop: Mr. Kelman saw police and ran away.
Cara: (Pulls a face and nods)
Cop: Ironically, like you, Mr. Kelman is also Israeli.
Cara: (Pulls a face)
Cop: Why would Mr. Kelman want to pick up this fraudulent New Zealand passport, any idea?
Who would want a New Zealand passport – and for what purpose? That country's passports are very much sought after and highly prized on the black market, especially by terrorists, on account of the visa-free access they provide to a wide range of destinations, including the U.S. In 1997, Mossad agents utilized Canadian passports in a botched attempt to assassinate an official of Hamas in Jordan. On a more ominous note, an Al Qaeda terrorist involved in the Millennium Plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport had been traveling with a stolen New Zealand passport.
The brouhaha over this incident is threatening to exacerbate Israel's already dubious image as a persecutor of paraplegics as well as Palestinians. Already the lawyer for the accused Israelis is whining that his clients can't get a fair trial on account of all the "prejudicial publicity." The point being that any and all coverage of this incident is considered by the Israelis to be "prejudicial." Prime Minster Clark's reply is something you would never hear from an American or Canadian politician in similar circumstances:
"I see already that lawyers for the accused are using the excuse that the news media in New Zealand is doing its job to try and claim that these two people will not get a fair trial. I absolutely reject that. They will get a fair trial and justice will run its course."
That's telling 'em, Helen!
What Clark and the NZ government want to know is whether Mossad spies are traipsing all over the world disguised as Israeli "tourists."
What has the Israelis in a tizzy is that the New Zealand media, unlike their American and Canadian counterparts, aren't shielding what was clearly an illegal Israeli covert action taking place inside their country, one that, furthermore, victimized someone who was hardly in a position to defend his own interests.
In the US, you'll remember, when a similar – but larger-scale – covert action was initiated by the Israelis, this time involving surveillance of government buildings, the matter was denied not only by the Israeli embassy but also by the Justice Department and other officials – and largely ignored by the media. This in spite of a detailed story in Salon, and a leaked government report compiled by an interagency task force. Reports by the Fox News network, Die Zeit, and Le Monde all detailed the story of how an Israeli spy operation in the US tracked the 9/11 hijackers 24/7. As Fox investigative reporter Carl Cameron reported in a December 17, 2001 broadcast:
"Since Sept. 11, more than 60 Israelis have been arrested or detained, either under the new patriot anti-terrorism law, or for immigration violations. A handful of active Israeli military were among those detained, according to investigators, who say some of the detainees also failed polygraph questions when asked about alleged surveillance activities against and in the United States."
"There is no indication that the Israelis were involved in the 9/11 attacks, but investigators suspect that they Israelis may have gathered intelligence about the attacks in advance, and not shared it. A highly placed investigator said there are "tie-ins." But when asked for details, he flatly refused to describe them, saying, "evidence linking these Israelis to 9/11 is classified. I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It's classified information."
As Scotland's Sunday Herald reported, along with the ABC News program 20/20, five Israelis were seen videotaping as the jetliners ploughed into the World Trade Center, and were later picked up with a strong suspicion that they were part of a Mossad operation.

Suffice to say that whatever uses Israel was going to put that fraudulently obtained passport, and whatever others it acquired under false pretenses, it bodes ill not only for New Zealand but for the rest of us as well.
