Berger Jewish Telegraphic Agency November 6, 2002 Pro-Israel activists say they are confident their legislative priorities will be able to get through the new Congress, which is now under firm Republican control. Several pro-Israel activists retained their seats in Tuesday's election, and former Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), a strong supporter of Israel,is returning to Congress after a two-year absence.American Jewish leaders watched the poll results closely Tuesday, butwithout much fear: Officials were comfortable with the candidates fromboth major parties in most Senate races, aside from New Hampshire."Everyone seems to be very good nowadays," said Morris Amitay, treasurerof the pro-Israel Washington PAC.Amitay noted that many of the candidates that the pro- Israel communitytargeted for defeat were eliminated in primaries. Indeed, incumbentReps. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.), Earl Hilliard (D- Ala.) and Bob Barr(R-Ga.) all lost their re-election primaries earlier this year. Several other lawmakers of concern - such as Reps. David Bonior(D-Mich.) and Sonny Callahan (R-Ala.) - did not seek re-election.In New Hampshire, Republican Rep. John Sununu, who is of Palestinian andLebanese descent, defeated New Hampshire's Democratic governor, JeanneShaheen, in a Senate race. The National Jewish Democratic Council blasted Sununu for not supportingseveral resolutions regarding Israel, including one criticizing theUnited Nations for passing anti-Israel resolutions and another seekinginformation on Israeli soldiers missing in Lebanon.
